How to paint shower base and wall tiles?

Hi there,

i want to renovate my bathroom by painting the shower base and tile walls all the same colour. The shower base is acrylic and I know i will need a different paint for that to the walls. The shower base and walls have been painted with an oil based enamel which is peeling off the shower base. Can you tell me what I can paint the shower base with ( that I can purchase at Bunnings) and what I can paint the walls with so it all matches. I know I have to do a lot of prep to sand off the old paint first.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us and thank you for sharing your question about painting your bathroom.

Based on my understanding, as far as I know, our products can only be applied to trays made of steel with an enamel coating. Various factors, such as changes in humidity, soap scum, submersion, and the presence of a flexible substrate, pose challenges for paint adhesion on acrylic or fibreglass trays. Ideally, the suitable paint for such trays would be an epoxy two-pack paint that can withstand submersion. However, such products require specialist tools and experience, it is not recommended for do-it-yourself applications.

Just out of curiosity how long did the enamel paint last before it started to peel off the shower base? It would be interesting to find out how long it held up with everyday use and repetitive cleaning.

Products such as the White Knight 1L White Satin Renew Tile And Laminate Paint and Rust-Oleum Tile Transformations Coating System are designed to go over tiled surfaces. 

My only other suggestions is to take into consideration the possibility of changing your shower tray. I recommend getting a quote from a few tilers and handy persons who have experience in bathroom remodelling. Perhaps they would be willing to change your tray for a reasonable amount. One other option would be to have the shower base area tiled over.
