How to mount posts to metal fence?

I have got a barrier net to stop the kids’ balls going over the fence and am looking for advice on the best way to mount it to our metal fence.

The posts are 30mm and have some pre-drilled holes, but I’m not sure what sort of screw to use.

I also planned to attach the posts to the fence posts but not sure which part of the fence posts to aim for.

Well your photo shows exactly what you need to do ie place the net up right against the fence post and use metal self drilling screws 50mm long to go through 30mm net pole and into fence post + 20mm use counter sink heads if you wish if they lock into the net poles pre drilled holes

Color bond posts join together back to back two C shapes so drill any where into the posts sides and the screw will be hidden inside the post and not sticking out the other side.

Use a minimum of 2-3 screws per post. The top rail hex screws may get in the way take them out if you have too.

Look like @Jewelleryrescue has already provided the answer of using Zenith 10G x 50mm Galvanised Countersunk Head Metal Screws. They are self-drilling, so no need to pre-drill their holes.

@chippa how did you go doing this? Did the screws suggested work for your installation? I have exactly the same posts arriving tomorrow and just wanna make sure that I’m buying the right screws… The image from Haverford shows hex head screws…

If you are looking to use hex head screws, I recommend looking at the Zenith 12G x 65mm Galvanised Hex Head Metal Screws or the Zenith 12G x 45mm Galvanised Hex Head Metal Screws. These screws are designed specifically for mounting and should work very well with your posts.

@EricL thank you! Given it’s a big net span (10m wide) with 3 metal fence support posts, would the 65mm length be better for the weight and if so, it won’t go through to the neighbours side?

It all depends on how thick the metal posts are and if you are screwing into a Colorbond fence post. If you can tell me how thick the additional posts will be I'll be able to tell you if its going to go through your fence posts. Just to put things in perspective, if the new post is 30mm thick then only 15mm will imbed itself into the Colorbond post using the 45mm deep screw. If you were to use the 65mm length, over 35mm will go through the post. The typical post depth is around 50mm on the interior side so 35mm is still within its tolerance.
