How to repair gate hinges?

I have gates that are approx 2.5 m long and 2m high. The construction is metal frame and wood slats. The ball hinge snapped and I need to replace it and likely the top one. I do not have access to a welder.

what are your recommendations for hinges and should I consider putting three (one top, one middle and bottom)

Hi @dweller,

That's quite a large gate, so if the current hinges have snapped then it suggests that they were undersized or there weren't enough of them used. So, you should consider increasing their size and/or adding an additional hinge.

What new hinges to select depends on the frame thickness and the mounting points you have available. These Goliath Right-Handed Gate Strap Hinges would be a good choice if you have room for them. Not only do they have an extended arm, but they also include ball bearings, which will make opening the gate a smooth process. Given the width of the gate, I'd still recommend you install three of them.

If you don't have access to a welder, you'll need to install the brackets directly into the steel frame with self-drilling metal screws. If the frame does not have enough width to allow this, you might need to install some additional timber onto the gate as mounting points.
