How to build a Montessori-style floor bed?

Hi there! 

I'm a newbie when it comes to creating and building DIY projects, but I find it slightly challenging to wrap my head around the engineering side of things... Every time I think that I can complete a project, I get befuddled with questions regarding power tools and how to go about renting tools (I live in an apartment and do not have the space to keep such tools) to achieve success on my projects, as well as where to start! I'm the kind that needs step by step instructions to help me along.

I've also read the 2 threads on here regarding Montessori-style floor beds and have been encouraged to try my hand at it! I'll most likely try doing this on my own, unless proven otherwise, which I'll then purchase a detailed project plan off Etsy with step-by-step instructions to follow (although I really don't want to purchase a plan... I'm hoping to get real-life hands on instructions and advise). I'll be completing this project all on my own as my husband is really not a handy-man, haha. 

Ideally the floor bed will have higher rails as my son is quite the daredevil and the frame needs to be able to fit a double-sized bed. I'm contemplating adding a gate or leaving it open for easy access - open for advice and suggestions!

Building a Montessori-style floor bed sounds like a great D.I.Y. project. For a floor bed with higher rails, especially one sized for a double mattress, you’ll need to consider not just the materials but also the power tools needed, especially for precise cutting and assembling sturdy railings. At a minimum, you'd need either a handsaw or compound mitre saw, drill driver, sander, drill bits, glue, clamps and fixings.

Renting tools can be a good option, but if space and accessibility are limited, it’s worth noting that the cost of the timber alone would likely exceed purchasing a ready-made unit online, such as the Artiss Wooden Bed Frame Kids House Single ROCK, which we have available. This is a single version, though. These pre-made beds can save you a lot of hassle.

If you still want to do it yourself, I suggest looking for tutorials with clear step-by-step guidance and perhaps starting with a smaller project to get a feel for the tools and materials before tackling a larger build. Of course, we’re here to help answer any questions along the way.
