How to seal outdoor wooden painted kids chairs & table?

Hi, we are currently DYI painting our sons wooden outdoor table & chairs & his wooden cubby house that has a approx measurement of 3.5mx3.5m. We visited the local bunnings and explained our DYI project, chose a few colours and were guided to purchase sample pots in the Dulux range to sample the colors on the outdoor furniture/cubby. As we were discussing weathershield paints for our project we assumed the paint pots were for external use, the pots l note also stated interior/exterior on their label. Once home we sampled the sample paints on the wooden chairs & ended up painting both wooden chairs completely ( they are small being kids furniture)..... only to be informed today, when again visiting Bunnings paint shop that the sample pots were indoor paint only??

Could you guide us to a clear sealant or other product that we can apply to these outdoor wooden chairs to protect the paint (which we now know was indoor paint) so that we don't have to sand them back and start again. Truly need a solution ...

Hi @AMC33,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Most clear-coat spray paints including this Rust-Oleum Clear Spray Paint and this Duramax Clear Coat Spray Paint are fine for use outdoors. You should just confirm that they specifically state they can be used outdoors on the packaging like these two do.

If you need more due to the size of the project, this Dulux 1L Design Clear Top Coat is also a good option.

For the cubby house, if you haven't already painted it, it would certainly be worthwhile getting some Dulux Weathershield tinted to your colour of choice.

I would also like to offer a warm howdy 🙂 Its a good place to hang out and scroll through peoples projects.

Yeah when I was using those sample pots for testing colours I found out the same. Tho in reality its not going to make a lot of difference to the childrens furniture 🙂 I would probarly paint over with an exterior paint to be safe such as the one that @JacobZ recomended but not need to sand anything back 🙂

I often troll through the paints that have been mis-tinted near the paint desk aisle 🙂 There are surpprisingly resonable colours sometimes amongst them 🙂 Do your children have a colour preference? or maybe a neautral colour that they can paint shapes on the interior of the cubby house? 🙂

Cant tell you how long the paint job will last 🙂 Depends on if they are left in the weather or withing the cubby house. I do think the exterior paint will give an extended life.

As to Painting with weathershield = yes

Sanding needed? = None

Exterior paint is meant for the exterior of houses so will be able to handle it longer.

Hi @AMC33,

You'll be fine just painting over them with exterior paint.

There's no need for heavy sanding to remove the paint, but a light sand between coats of paint is worthwhile to remove any bubbles or abnormalities in the first coat before applying the next.

This will give you more longevity than a clear coat which can fade and yellow over time.

l will proceed with the dulux weathershield paint for the outdoor furniture as a further coat and the cubby will be painted with the same!

Now my other project is to paint our backyard wooden paling fences in a black weathershield paint. They are currently stained in a redgum color and haven't been re-stained for many years. I have sanded back areas that were peeling (which was minimal), do l need to apply anything to the fence before painting, ie. do l need to prime (or other) it and if so what do you recommend.

I did have the front side paling fences painted black two years ago by professional painters and l note they didn't prime, they just painted over the stain...

What would be the best application for the best outcome, l really don't want to be doing this terribly frequently.

I can vouch for the Rusto-Oleum product @JacobZ recommends. I apply two coats at the start and end of summer on our hanging chair. It gets quite a bit of weather from hot winds to rain. This product doesn't yellow and dried very quick. I just wish I applied it the first time a little sooner as the cane had already started to blacken in parts. But its also helped to bind the cane tie strips in place, which can be a real issue with these chairs.

Hi @AMC33,

Assuming no oily coating remains on the fence after sanding, most external paints including Dulux Weathershield are self-priming, so you can go ahead and paint.

Considering the amount of painting you are doing; it might be worth investing in an airless sprayer such as this Wagner W350 Wood And Metal Paint Sprayer.

You can then use How To Spray Paint A Fence for some guidance.
