How to enclose an alfresco?

We would like to enclose the 2 sides with glass sliding doors to protect this area from the elements.

However, not sure how to work around the irregular shaped column in the corner.

We would like any additions to blend in with the existing structure.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Yes that Column is tricky.

The way I see it is you need framework between the column and the house walls in which to support the new windows and or sliding doors Basically the column area will need to be custom built from where the sliding door frame ends to the column or around it timber or brick etc.

I can visualise a corner glass panel (two sheets of glass butting together with silicon. I have this in my home on three full size corners) above the brick work. allowing more light into that room. It is a little tricky putting in window furnishings, we like it.

Or Have you considered a lower cost option of wrapping that corner in cafe blind style with clear walls and doors etc.?

Just for the record the house was designed this way not my DYI conversion.

I took picture of the lower half of window so you can see how the glass frame works; the frame would sit on top of your outer brick work column it's the exact same at the top. So imagine the glass sitting wrapped around the outside front of your column. The column would almost form a feature in itself sitting inside your room.

I think you would agree the corner windows invite the outside into the home no dark corners.

FYI That room has windows on 3 sides like a glass house (with timber frame between window frames) and no doors and a second glass corner opposite the one in the photo.

Your room is 2 sides with glass doors and a glass corner. Well food for thought:)

@Jewelleryrescue has provided some fantastic ideas, and the corner glass panel is definitely an elegant solution worth exploring. To add to their suggestions, framing out the area will most likely be necessary for the installation. It’s important to check with your glass door supplier to understand how the frames will need to be fixed to the existing structures.

If side fixings are required for stability, then constructing a timber frame around the irregular-shaped column could be the most practical approach. This would provide a secure base for attaching the glass sliding doors while allowing you to customise the appearance to blend seamlessly with the existing structure. A timber frame could also be painted or clad to complement your alfresco area’s design.
