Suggestions wanted for fireplace where has heater has been removed

I’ve just had our gas heater decommissioned and removed in the living room and I am left with a hole that’s not a neat looking as I’d hoped. I did plan to just paint the brick inside but there seems so me a range of bricks and also foam etc. 

do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to make this whole look neat? I know adding an electric fireplace would be one but I’m looking for a cheaper option.

I can think of a couple of options to make the hole look neater. First, I’d recommend cleaning out the fireplace completely and removing any debris. After that, if you're keen to restore it, you could put in the effort of removing the poorly patched area, finding similar bricks, and installing them into the gap with mortar. This approach would take time and effort but could give you the look you're after.

A simpler option could be to cut a piece of MDF sheeting to the size of the back wall and adhere it in place using Liquid Nails. Once it's secured, you can then paint the entire area, which would instantly give it a cleaner and more uniform appearance. This is a more budget-friendly way to tidy up the space without going to the lengths of brick restoration.
