What type of paint to use on timber gate?

Hi there

i am wanting to paint an exterior timber gate as pictured. I used a fence paint (walpalmur) and even after 2 coats it’s not showing anything. I’m guessing I’m using the wrong type of paint. Can anyone please recommend? 
I prefer stain / wood colour but am open to other colours. I just want the right type of paint please!

It sounds like your timber gate may have weathered quite a bit, which can make it more challenging for paint or stain to adhere and show properly. Before applying any new finish, it's a good idea to sand the surface to remove the weathered layer and create a smoother, more receptive surface for the product.

For your preference towards stain or wood colour, Cabot's Aquadeck from the store could be an excellent choice. It's a water-based decking oil that penetrates the wood, enhancing its natural colour while protecting it from the elements. This product works well on outdoor timber and provides a natural, rich finish that highlights the wood grain.

If you decide to go with paint instead, Dulux Weathershield is a durable, weather-resistant option that adheres well to exterior wood surfaces. It provides long-lasting colour and protection, making it ideal if you're open to using a solid colour.

In both cases, proper preparation is key. Sanding the gate thoroughly, cleaning it, and allowing it to dry before applying your chosen stain or paint will help ensure the best results. Applying the product according to the manufacturer’s instructions will also help achieve a beautiful, lasting finish.
