How to prune this plant?

asking this for my neighbour. He has a plant lining up his driveway. He is unsure about the name of the plant. However, as can be seen, the plants have started to slant as they have been growing. He is planning to get some bamboo sticks to hold them up straight. He has a question though. Can he cut the branches of the plant to avoid them coming into driveway? Would cutting stunt the growth of the plant?

Let me tag a few helpful garden experts to see if they can help identify the plant. It would obviously be better to identify the plant first in case it is fussy about what time of year it can be pruned.

Also do you have strong winds in your area that could be affecting the growth?

we do not have regular strong winds but we did experience quite a few last week, like rest of Greater Sydney area.

Hi @hisumesh,

I am fairly confident that these are lilly-pillies.

I would suggest staking them first and allowing them to strengthen up a bit. This will also give you a better look at their shape as they certainly look like they've been blown over.

Use long stakes such as these Growies 38 x 38mm 1800mm Hardwood Gardens Stakes with a soft plant tie. Give them a week or so to strengthen up and then reassess.

You can then prune them back to the edge of the driveway using sharp secateurs.

Make sure they get plenty of water and an application of Native Controlled Release Fertiliser so they can bounce back after pruning.
