How to treat rust on upright fan?

The cage of the fan has lots of rust coming through the white paint/plastic on metal. If it were a cheaper fan, I'd buy a new one, but this one is barely 18 months old and has a few handy features. So, can I paint the cage with a white primer paint to make it look good again?

Painting the cage of your fan is a great way to refresh its look and prevent further rust. I’d recommend removing the cage before painting to avoid getting paint on the blades or motor.
