How to repair timber floor damaged by tape?

One of my kids used duct tape on the floor and after a week tried to remove it but unfortunately ripped off the coating with it. I bought sand paper and oil based stain and varnish, applied 2 coats but not happy with result. Should I apply more coats? ANY advice will be appreciated as I'm in a rental.

You could try applying a couple more coats, as the colour does seem to be heading in the right direction. The challenge is that the existing floor coating has likely darkened over time, making it difficult to get a perfect match. Since the tape pulled it off so easily, it’s also a sign that the finish isn’t well bonded to the floor, which might indicate it's due for a full recoat or even sanding.

That said, since you're in a rental and just looking to improve the damaged section, a few more coats of stain and varnish may help blend it in better. You could also try lightly feathering the edges with fine sandpaper to soften the transition between the damaged and undamaged areas before applying additional coats. If the difference is still noticeable, using a tinted polyurethane or stain that better matches the aged coating could help.
