Where to install French drain under sidewalk?

Hello!

we are looking at building a sidewalk similar to the attached photo, but we want to install a French drain under it. We are a bit lost when it comes to where the French drain should be. Should it be on the pebble side right against the house, or rid it ok to have it under the stepping stones?

Welcome to the Bunnings community pages 🙂 Its a good place to wander through for ways to install your drain 🙂

Id actually put the French drain under the pavers in the middle, right next to the house you may hit your concrete footing for the house itself. Factor in where the French drain will drain to. The gravel around the french drain below and up to at least level with the drain (id go higher even to the point of laying a geotecs cloth to seperate and then the white pbbles on top) That way it should always drain freely.

I was just thinking and here is an example of having a french drain type deal. I did cover the gravel with clay but for your instance I would fill to ground level with gravel. Stormwater rectification stage 1 There is also a stage 2 of the project 🙂

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your French drain.

It's great that you've received excellent advice from @Dave-1. Just to add to the suggestions made, it is also possible to have the French drain on the right side of the pavers away from the house. This will give you a larger surface area to allow water to drain away. However, it is vital that the ground area for the paver be built with a slope. It will be a bit tricky as you need to keep the pavers level, it might be necessary to use concrete under the pavers to keep them level at the top.
