How to build (internal) bar?

Hi all,

I'm going to have a crack building a bar for my living room. I'm currently in the design phase and wanted to know if I'm better off using 90x45mm untreated framing pine or 90x35mm...or something else.

To keep the cost down, I was going to use framing timber and look to clad the front with something else (perhaps MDF, or old corrugated iron, fence palings etc).

Appreciate any guidance you could give me with the framing etc.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about building a bar.

Using 90mm x 45 mm for your bar frame is definitely possible, but I also suggest looking at the 70mm x 35mm. It should be strong enough to carry bar stock, dispensers and the other accessories that a bar needs. Despite the smaller timber frame, you can still clad it with MDF or corrugated iron sheets. This is a great opportunity for you to dress up your bar table to make it standout. It all depends on what character you would like it to have. For example, giving it a nautical theme, Caribbean or perhaps a pirate's treasure trove. Not only does it become a talking point, but it gives your bar personality. Once your friends visit, they are sure to offer names and if you are a fan "The Prancing Pony" should sound familiar to you especially if you've been to Bree. Or you just might end up calling it Jeff's Bar which is perfectly alright.

In regards to the benchtop, I recommend looking at the Specrite 2200 x 600 x 26mm Timber Multi Use Pine Panel. It can be stained, painted or oiled the choice is up to you.

🙂 The Bar that everyone goes to, If you ever read Science fiction have a look at Callahan's Crosstime Saloon by **** Robinson 🙂

I would also think the 70 * 35 Non structual timber would be acceptable and lower costs.

I would make sure that the whole lot is mounted on flat pieces of timber, just for ease of building really. Your picture of example bar ha svertical supports that go down to the floor instead of down to a flat piece of timber.

I would also suggest maybe the sound proof board Prempanel 2700 x 600 x 21mm Oak Timber Acoustic Panel as something you could have front facing. I like the horizontal look but either way would look good. With something along the lines of Practa 2200 x 600 x 26mm Acacia Timber Benchtop for the benches.

You could also go the route of adding lockable wheels so you can shift it around after parties and lock it so the wobbly people can lean on it 🙂 Easyroll 100mm Blue Rubber Swivel Brake Castor

Love this project. I would also go with 70mm x 35mm non-treated pine as @EricL suggested to save on cost. which you can screw or nail together for the frame. One of my favourite claddings for a man-cave, benches and bars or even a feature wall is OSB panel. Looks great, is sealed already on one side and relatively inexpensive. Use a 90deg trim to cover the corners.
