How to join Porta 66 x 18mm 2.7m Colonial Architrave TABMA Pre Primed FJ Pine at 90 degree angle?

I am doing wainscoting project in my hallway, i installed two separate chair rails at two walls at 90 degree angle but there is gap because of profile on the moulding.

@MitchellMc can you please help me to know how these two moulding parts can be joint at 90 degree to form smooth finish.

It would be really helpful if you could share some images showing the issue you're encountering. Let me know if you need a hand uploading pictures.

If both pieces of moulding were cut at 45 degrees and then joined at a 90-degree corner, they should align seamlessly—unless the wall isn't a true 90 degrees and is slightly out of square.

Were you attempting mitre cuts for the corner, or did you try to butt the pieces together? Butting profiled moulding will always leave a gap due to the shape of the profile, which is why mitre cuts are used for corners. A mitre box can be used to establish the 45-degree cuts.

I was able to do the 45 degree bevel cuts for both piece of mouldings to have that joint. Thanks very much for your help.

I need your advice also on nailing the "Porta 66x11mm 2.7m Colonial Architrave" onto the plaster wall using the nail gun. I have used the nail gun already to nail at the stud locations but i also want to use the nail gun to attach on the wall where there is no studs. My preference is to avoid using "liquid nails".

Question i have is, if i can use nail gun do i need to use at low force or highest force to avoid any potential damage to plaster wall. Also i used 38mm 18 Gauge nails which come with Ozito PXC 18V Cordless 2 in 1 Nail and staple Gun on stud locations. Can i use the same nail length for other locations without studs or i need to use smaller length nails such as 25mm. Does it make difference ?

Hi @Vish07,

Great job on getting those 45-degree cuts done.

It's fine to attach the architrave just to the plasterboard, and you can use the same 38mm nails. Just keep in mind that these sections won’t be as secure as the ones nailed into studs, so you should pop a few extra nails in those areas.

Before you continue, it’s a good idea to do a test shot to check how far the nail penetrates. You’ll want the nail head to sit about a millimetre below the surface of the moulding for a neat finish. Since there’s no stud behind these sections, using the same power setting as before might drive the nails in too far. Adjust the strength of your nail gun to suit—reducing the power slightly should help prevent over-penetration.
