How to fix brick around door frame?

Hi,

I am looking for advice on what trade I should be engaging to tidy up around the frame of my front door or if there are any diy alternatives. 

As I hope you can gather from my photos my front door frame sits untidily in the brick wall. It appears that a previous owner has replaced whatever was previously there with this black security door shown.

For the vertical left length of the door there is a gap between the black frame and the brick wall. You can see a wooden frame underneath. This gap is not uniform and it is wider at the top. This is especially evident at the top corner. 

I am wondering what I could do to tidy it up. I don’t think this is creating and draft issues so I’m really just looking to improve aesthetics. I have thought of painting and fitting some floor trim but am worried this would look tacky on just one side. 

Looking for any ideas or suggestions on whether I should engage someone like a stonemason to cut and insert red brick.

Hi @Db2,

My first thoughts are adding a Metal Mate 40 x 25 x 1.6mm 3m Black Aluminium Unequal Angle up the length with the small leg against the door frame and the longer against the wall. It's likely that a flashing similar to this should have been installed in the first place. The angle can be glued to the bricks with Liquid Nails, and you might like to screw it to the door frame with some self-taping screws.

At the top, with the wider gap, you are missing a small section of brick. Once the aluminium angle is installed, you could probably get away with filling this area with mortar, creating a faux mortar joint. However, to keep the look consistent it would be best to tint the mortar with brick red oxide and recreate the brick.

You could certainly use a timber quad moulding, but the black aluminium angle might blend in better and be more similar to the steel door frame.
