How to refresh soil in large pot containing mandarin tree?

Hello new person here!

I have a ten year old mandarin tree in a very large pot. I think 5e tree is root bound and I would like to refresh the soil but cannot remove the tree due to its size.  Any ideas would be helpful as we are very senior folk here.

Since removing the tree isn't an option, you can still refresh the soil and help your mandarin tree thrive. One approach is top-dressing, where you remove the top 5–10 cm of old soil and replace it with fresh citrus potting mix or compost. This will provide new nutrients without disturbing the roots too much.
 

Another method is vertical root pruning, which involves using a long, narrow garden trowel or an old saw to carefully cut into the soil around the edge of the pot in several spots. This helps break up compacted roots and allows for better water and nutrient absorption. If you can manage it, gently loosening some surface roots before adding new soil will also help.
 

To improve aeration, try using a root stimulator like diluted seaweed solution which encourages healthy new root growth. Also, ensure proper drainage by slightly lifting the pot off the ground using pot feet or bricks to prevent waterlogging.
 

If the tree is severely root-bound and struggling, you might consider hiring a local gardener or asking family members to assist in repotting or root pruning.
