How to extend the life of a retaining wall?

   Hello, I’m looking for some advice for my retaining wall. Is there a way to fix the upright sleepers to get a little more time out of the retaining wall? The next door neighbours will take a little while to come to the party to replace the whole thing. Looking for an interim solution (if one is possible). The old sleeps have been rotting at the base. Any advice is appreciated!!

It looks like you're dealing with a fairly serious situation. A retaining wall that high—around 1000mm—would typically require engineering to construct safely, and since some of the upright posts have completely rotted through, the structural integrity of the wall has been severely compromised. The pressure from the soil behind it means the risk of collapse is very real, especially if there's any movement or additional loading.

Unfortunately, with posts that are no longer sound, there’s no reliable short-term fix I could recommend that would guarantee safety. Temporary bracing or patch-up jobs might seem like a solution, but at this height and level of failure, they could create a false sense of security and lead to bigger problems.

I’d strongly suggest isolating the area with some safety or danger tape to prevent access and reaching out to a retaining wall specialist or qualified tradesperson. They may be able to offer a temporary stabilisation method until you and your neighbour are ready to replace the wall properly.

Your safety and that of others around the area is the top priority here—please don’t take any risks with a wall of this size and condition.
