How to refinish varnished front door without sanding to bare timber?

Hi guys, 

Our front door is looking a little worse for wear. I need to get it looking nice, but I’m not that keen to sand back to bare timber. The door frame is in good condition and majority of the door is as well, just the lower parts that get a lot more sun are not great. I’ve given it a light sand, but I really don’t want to sand back to bare timber. Is there a product I can use?

Since you've already given it a light sand, you might like to try something like Feast Watson Spar Marine Varnish. It's designed for outdoor use and can be applied over previously coated timber, provided the surface is clean, lightly sanded, and in reasonable condition. These products will help protect the door from further UV and moisture damage while giving it a refreshed appearance. However, it does appear that a stain has been used on the door. If you want to maintain that warm, reddish look without stripping it all back, I’d suggest going with a stain and varnish in one that has a similar hue. Something like Cabot’s Stain & Varnish might be a good match, depending on how deep the colour is. Do a small test in an inconspicuous spot first—it’ll help you gauge whether the tone blends well or enhances the warmth unevenly.

Just a heads-up, because the lower part of the door is more worn and sun-affected, applying varnish over the whole surface may result in a visible difference in colour or tone between the top and bottom sections. The worn areas can soak up the varnish differently, which may highlight the contrast rather than blend it in.

If you want to even things out a bit more, you could apply an extra coat or two to the lighter, worn areas before doing the full coat over the entire door. It won’t be perfect, but it might help reduce the contrast.
