What porcelain paver slurry mix?

I will soon be laying 50m2 of porcelain pavers 600x600x20 in our backyard. Being from England, I have being looking for a slurry mix to brush onto the back of the pavers to form a bond to the mortar bed. However, the terminology is different here and buying a powder bag of slurry mix is proving difficult. Please help with any recommendations that would be suitable. Thanks, Marc

Let's just make sure we're referring to the same things as I try to explain the process.

Mortar bed = concrete slab or base
Slurry = Tile adhesive
Grout = Grout

Here are a few handy step-by-step guides:

The general process is to clean the surface of the concrete base and repair any cracks using Earl's 500g Concremate Expanding Cement and making sure that the surface is flat and level. You then calculate how you'll be laying the tiles in the area and once you have that figured out you can begin mixing your tile adhesive. I recommend having a look at Davco 20kg SMP Evo Tile Adhesive as its designed for porcelain tiles. I suggest using a QEP 12mm Square Notch Handyman Adhesive Trowel to spread the adhesive evenly.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll explain the process; lay a sand/cement wet mortar bed onto compacted road base and then lay pavers onto the wet mortar mix. What I need help with is what product to apply to the back of the paver so it properly bonds to the mortar.

Hi @marc6hayes,

We typically just bed pavers directly into the wet mortar base, and as long as they're pressed in solidly and evenly, there’s often no need to apply a slurry to the back first. The mortar bed itself provides the necessary bond when the paver is well seated into it. That said, if you’d prefer to prime the back of the pavers for extra adhesion, you can make a simple slurry mix using standard cement — water it down until it forms a smooth, paintable consistency. This can be brushed onto the back of the paver before laying. Some installers also use products like Bondcrete mixed with cement to enhance the bond.
