How to refresh gable end?

I’m looking to freshen up my gable end with weatherboard, too bring some new life to the front (Already respirating roof, gutters and faces in monument grey). Existing is 2 x 5-10mm boards with battery under the eaves. Can I just go over the top with the weatherboard or should I remove first? Also, where the weatherboard meets the eaves can I just finish off with sealant? Also, how do I finish the bottom of the weatherboard where you walk into the entrance. Thanks Dave

Hi @Glassy,

Thank you for your question about installing weatherboard over the gable end above the entrance to your home.

While it would be easier to remove the existing gable materials, you can install the weatherboard over the existing gable as long as you can locate the fixing points and you use nails that will penetrate through the weatherboard, the existing gable materials and then embed at least 30mm into the framing.

You'd want to start by locating the framing. This can be done with a stud finder.

If you inspect the existing gable, can you see the nails or screws? This will give you an idea of where the framing is without using a stud finder.

Once you've located the framing, you will have to cut the weatherboards to length and the angle of the eaves. You can use a Sliding Bevel to find and transfer the angle from the gable to the weatherboards.

Weatherboards will be fixed in place with flat head galvanised nails of a suitable length for your materials.

Where the weatherboards meet the eaves, you can finish with sealant. This No More Gaps Exterior Gap Filler would be perfect.

I am struggling to find examples of a weatherboard finishing on an open gable, but I would assume it would just overhang the bottom edge by about 20mm to prevent drips from rounding the bottom edge and travelling into the roof structure.

if your just reviewing to the gable over the entrance, then yes I would weatherboard straight over them as @JacobZ has also suggested.

However I don't believe a stud finder will be of use in this scenario to find the stud fixing points. You have timber trellis type material over what possibly is cement sheeting, which even the best stuff finder won't help you with. However @JacobZ suggestion to look for embedded nail heads will be your best bet.

Several year back I replaced gable panelling with new weatherboards and you will find this adjustable bevel tool, perfect for matching the angle for each end cut. Don't be to unforgiving on yourself if not perfect as the gap filler Jason suggested is exactly what I used to fill the spaces. Plus the distance from the ground and once painted, I can guarantee nobody will notice a thing. The product goes off very fast so do any smoothing straight away!

Probably too late for your project @Glassy.

Depending on the weatherboards you are using, the factory finish along the bottom edge should be fine, especially at that height.

If not you could try covering the edge with a pcv moulding similar to this https://www.bunnings.com.au/brutus-16mm-x-2-4m-building-moulding-u-mould_p1100637. I'd only use this with fibre cement boards though since it will collect some moisture.
