How to install rack shelving on a sloped concrete pour?

Hi All,

I have a storage area in the back of my garage which has a concrete pour. It makes the storage are pretty unusable, I don't want to try demolishing the concrete and risking damage, but I would like to at least make use of the area for storage. I was thinking of getting 'Rack It' shelving kits and cutting the back legs to the right length with an angle grinder, then dyna bolting all the legs into the concrete.

Looking for suggestions on how to fix it into the ground properly, and ideas for shelving kits I can use. Or any other advice and suggestions.

I made some very rough dimensions.

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

That's a bit of a tricky one, especially because of the curved nature of the concrete mass.

Unfortunately, I can't see a reasonable way that you could use any premade shelving kits.

The only solution I can think of is to mount timber cleats to the concrete. They would need to be ripped at an angle so that the top edge is level and the bottom sits flat on the concrete. You would need one of these cleats mounted at the height of each shelf.

From there, you could construct basic shelves with framing timber and plywood or MDF as the shelf top. The back edge of these shelves would sit on and attach to the cleats.

You could then mount timber posts to the concrete in front of the sloped concrete using bolt-down anchors. The shelves would then be attached to these posts with batten screws or bolts.

This is one solution that I'm confident would work. Allow me to tag @Noyade, @Dave-1 and @Nailbag to see what ideas they might have.

Thats a hard one, I am reluctant to say even to drill into that concrete pour, Its watertight at the moment and you dont know how thick, if there is reo in it type deal. I still think you can use the space 🙂 but not drill into it.

So I am thinking of a few H styled end frames for shelves

Red = Non structual pine (or structual, your call) straight supports in a H frame design with diagonal bracing

Green = Same pine bolted to the H frame and also at the rear a horizontal piece that the two rails are bolted to.

Yellow = Flat boards, something that wont bow, maybe with a few support between the rails

Blue = This would stop the shelves from wanting to drif out towards the photographer, So H frame bolted to the ground with angle brackets, the top secured to the beams over head (maybe with a length of timbe across the top of the H)

Notes -

- rubber mat under the rails on the concrete end, keep the moisture away plus will help with movement. (No bolts into the concrete pour)

- cross beam at the top of the H's to extend attachment to the ceiling rafters.

- Timber base of the H held off the floor with the angled brackets that are bolted, to create air gap so less chance of decay.

I slopping stair case that is attached at the top to the overhead beams and at the bottom the concrete floor, the steps are deep to allow adjustment of items on the shelves. The angle is pretty much the very rear top and down so it just misses that middle mound.
