How to repaint an original pipeline bed?

Hello everyone, I'm hoping to get some guidance on the best steps to take on an original 80s/90s pipeline bunkbed. It's currently a glossy sapphire blue and wanting a more Matt version of the old heritage green.

My more direct questions follow but am keen for any and all tips/tricks/info

Do I need to strip the original paint or sand the surface?

Are they galvanised/some special coating and dose that require anything special. (Google was no help)

Can i slap on the old colourbond stuff in the shed or Which paint would be recommended.

My experience with them in that time period you mentioned, was mild steel tube. I remember because some frames we purchased had end connections so poorly engineered - I eventually welded them together.

Thinking back to that period.

Be very wary of this metal tapered 'friction' join.

Especially if your kids are rough with the bed - jumping/wrestling - rocking fore and aft on the supports.

Thank you, my partner has already planned to re weld these points as one is slightly rusty.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about repainting a pipeline bed.

It appears that the bed frame is still in good condition and does not have any heavy rust spots or flaking, peeling paint. I suggest sanding the entire surface with a 180grit sandpaper, if you have access to an electric sander, it would make the sanding process go a lot faster. I then recommend using the White Knight Rust Guard set. I propose cleaning the surface using Selleys Sugar Soap Wall Cleaning Wipes - 25 Pack. Once the surface is dry you can then follow the general process of painting the metal surface. Use the White Knight 0.125L Rust Guard Rust Converter followed by the White Knight Rust Guard 300g Grey SLS Etch Primer Spray Paint. Allow the primer to cure properly before using your choice of top coat. I propose looking at the White Knight Rust Guard Gloss White Epoxy Enamel Paint - 1L (it is available in a satin fish) tinted to your preferred colour.

Please make sure to follow the application guides for effective coverage. Please make sure to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when working on your project.
