I wanted a more modern look on our three deckings. They all were dark brown stained timber which showed every footprint and bird dropping. I was washing the decks every week, so decided to lighten them.
I didn’t want the finished job to look like a flat painted deck so I lightly brushed the second coat to give a weathered timber look.
After painting the decking I also painted the brown stained furniture white which completed the look I was after.
Materials
Cabot’s decking paint in Windspray for the undercoat
Cabot’s decking paint in shale grey for the top coat
British Paints Paint and Prime white for the furniture
Tools
Wide paint brushes
Steps
Step 1
Wash the decking and lightly sand
Step 2
Paint the darker grey first coat covering the boards well checking to see the edges are also covered.
Step 3
When this coat is dry, paint the lighter grey top coat over the boards using long strokes and a wide paint brush. This coat is almost like dry brushing. It picks up any grain and imperfections on the boards to look like weathered timber.
Step 4
To complete the over all look, paint the furniture with two coats of Prime and Paint. An undercoat and top coat all in one. I washed the furniture but didn’t bother to sand at all.
Step 5
I was very pleased with the finished products. I now only have to wash the decking occasionally as footprints and bird droppings are far less noticeable. The decking looks like weathered rustic boards which was the effect I was looking for.
