How to bolt timber post to metal stringer?

In order to install a handrail, I first need to attach timber posts to the top, middle, and bottom of my metal stringer staircase.

Am I able to just drill a hole and put a bolt through the timber post and metal stinger to join them?
I have done this same method in the past with timber stringers.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

On stairs with steel stringers, I have always seen the posts being bolted to the top of the treads using a Bolt Down Post Anchor. Using a bolt-down anchor, you would bolt down through the tread to attach the anchor and then bolt sideways through the post and anchor to lock it in place.

I can't say I'm sure whether it would be acceptable to bolt straight through the stringer, but I am happy to check with the supplier when they reopen tomorrow.

Hi @rabbito,

I have received a response from Galintel, and the short and simple is, they would not recommend bolting through the stringer for two main reasons.

The first being that it alters the structure in a way that is not tested and certified to meet their standards and would thus void any warranty on the product.

The second is that because they are a hot-dip galvanised product, by drilling through them, you are creating a weakness in the coating that will expose the product to issues from rust if moisture finds a way inside.
