How to fix blotchy white wash?

Hi 🙂

I sanded this tv cabinet down to raw timber, then white washed it with a 3in1 white acrylic paint mixed with water 1:2 ratio. Then stained with a walnut stain... but the stain came on blotchy, in hindsight where I added more white wash to counter the sugar soap staining that occurred. Ugh haha

The original end goal was to be light timber look but not orange or yellow, which it does a bit in person. What should I do? Go over with a tan/cream paint wash? Or another run of the walnut stain?

Then wanting a matte finish, would you recommend a bees wax?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your TV cabinet.

I propose doing a light sand to even out the finish and changing the brush you are using to a wide one at least 60mm to 70mm in width. I recommend giving it one more try with the walnut stain.

I suggest looking at Cabot's 1L Matt Water Based Cabothane Clear Polyurethane as a possible sealer. Please double check for compatibility with your paint product before using.

I agree with Eric.

Another light sand may help to even out the patchy area. If your wanting to go light apply another white wash, after sanding.

When white washing. Apply in long directions with the wood grain in sections. Wipe on , wipe off.

Another tip. Once the white wash is dry, apply a clear coat of water based sealer first before applying the stain. This in my experience helps to achieve a more even coat of stain application.
