How to fix rust damage on outdoor wall?

Hi,

I recently noticed that the paint on my balcony wall has started coming off, so I peeled it and underneath there’s quite a bit of rust damage. I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations on how to fix it up and restore it properly.

Thanks for sharing your question about your outdoor wall. It appears that water has entered the surface of your wall and has rusted out the external corner bead of the wall. Generally speaking, if the rust has travelled to more than 50 percent of the length of the corner bead it would be best to replace the whole lot. In this instance the only way to find out is to remove more of the external plaster to reveal the condition of the corner bead.

The corner will need to be cleaned, and the old corner bead removed. If there is no other moisture damage to the wall a new corner bead can be installed and the corner replastered. If you've not done any carpentry repair or plastering before, I recommend getting a quote from a professional to see how much the repair will cost. Although this type of repair is within the realm of D.I.Y. a professional repair will carry a warranty with it.

100% agree with @EricL on this one being more than a straight-forward DIY job. The stained crack going so far up the corner of the wall indicates the external edge is corroding and loosing its strength as it crumbles away. This is an advanced repair and not one I would even tackle due to the required specialised finish result. And as Eric mentioned, the it will require a professional to remove the render, and refit a new external trim and re-render to blend in to the rest of the wall.

I would look around the rest of the home to see what other areas have cracks and/or chips. These should be repaired either by yourself if small or larger then, by the repairer. If small you can follow my DIY article. Leaving damaged render can lead to more serious issues such as this if left long term.

@EricL has really mentioned all that I can think of as well. I would tend towards a professional repair if you are a novice mainly because its external and you want to make sure its right plus for the rust not to happen again. As the pieces are removed hopefully it may be obvious as to the path that led to the rust/sealing breaking down starting.
