How to improve front yard?

I have a small front yard with a narrow strip at the boundary side. I am trying to think of easy ways to beautify the area. My side of the house is mainly landscaped with pebbles and pavers (shown in the last photo in the link).

For the front narrow strip, I am thinking of clearing everything and putting in white pebbles and garden solar lights.

For the front yard, I can only think of mowing and removing the weeds, but that is more of an upkeep than beautifying it.

If anyone has easy DIY ideas I would like to know your thoughts and suggestions!

Thanks for sharing photos of your front yard. I propose building a terraced platform on the narrow side using sleepers. This will prevent your white pebbles from being carried away by rainwater and you can fill each terrace with succulents or plants of your choice. for the pebbled section at the front of your windows I suggest making the pebble walk wider and putting in some pavers just like in this discussion - Travertine pavers and gravel garden path by @TaylerMayd. My only addition to this project is to place garden edging on the other side so that the pebbles don't spread out to your lawn.

For the front garden in front of the windows, I propose adding new mulch such as Richgro 70L Pine Bark Mulch. Its rich red colour will add a splash of colour to your existing garden. For the side yard where you have an existing paved walkway, I recommend removing all the weeds or spraying it with weedkiller and committing the entire length to pebbles rather than having parts of it in your lawn.

Having a think of what you can do with your garden area.

I pretty much have the same steps that you have suggested in mind for your area right down to some solar lights. @EricL 's suggestion to widen the bebble area with the pavers would look pretty nice as well.

Maintenance verse beautifying mmmm

It would be nice to have an area maintance free but I am yet to see one other then a hard surface area and that destroys that soft green feeling.

So back to beautifying the area, how about some soid edges to the garden beds, not timber but maybe some square edged smoot/shiny concrete? That section next to your side path is what I am thinking. Maybe modify your letterbox area, Install a new one that is more tehn just a letterbox, Either a rendered brickwork or a gabion styled cage (depends on the style of your new edges and matching what you have)

With the lighting, instead of solar go for fixed low voltage lights that highlight the underside of the plants on the front fence line. Have a walk around in the evening with a strong but narrow torch and point the light upwards from ground level and see what effects you could get.

I generally do maintenance around about now for the next month on prep for spring when everything wants to go nuts. So pruning, transplanting I want done now. I have just spent a week weeding cats claws by hand and I think its worth the effort for a part of the year.

I've placed an image below to give you an idea of the terraced layout I was referring to. As to your second question, yes, the pebbles should be placed all along the side boundary all the way to the foot path. I think solar lights would be preferrable so that you won't have to spend a lot of money for permanent electrical fittings.
