How to reduce the cost of building a low-level deck?

Hi,

I would like to build a low-level deck next to my caravan. The total deck height could be 140mm or 410mm.

I couldn’t figure out how I would build a 140mm high deck so I have done the calculations for a 410mm high deck (See attached image of the deck layout calculator). The decking materials cost came out at around $3K.

1. Is it possible to build a low-level deck that is only 140mm high? If so, could you please provide some recommendations on how to do this because this is my preferred height?

2. Could you please provide some tips on how to reduce costs?

The simplest way to achieve your preferred 140mm height is to remove the bearers and just build with 90mm joists. With 19mm decking boards on top, the overall height would be about 109mm. You can then sit the joists on adjustable decking feet to bring the finished height up to 140mm.

Unfortunately, this method does not really reduce costs, as most of the expense comes from the decking boards themselves and the timber used in the frame. There are only a few ways to bring costs down. One option is to choose treated pine decking, which is a little cheaper than hardwood. Another option is to reduce the overall size of the deck to fit within your budget, and then finish the rest of the area with something like paving, gravel or synthetic turf.
