How to remove thick bed of weeds?

Hi there,

I am currently living in a rental and the nature strip has grown a thick bed of weeds which I need to remove.

i have tried to use a pitch fork to loosen the soil but I am struggling to get this in deep enough.

Does anybody have a step by step process to remove these weeds effectively? Should I be putting a weed killer down? At the moment I am not planning to put any stones or lawn down afterwards as I want to ask the landlord if they are willing to do this.

Looking at your photos, there doesn’t seem to be any lawn left, so you’ve got two main options. The quickest is to spray the area with a broad-spectrum weed killer (like a glyphosate product). That will knock everything down without you having to dig each plant out. Once it’s died off in a week or two, rake up the debris, and you’ll be ready to improve the soil and either reseed or lay turf if your landlord agrees.

If you’d prefer to avoid chemicals, wet the soil first and then use a hoe, mattock or fork to lever the weeds out. For a less back-breaking approach, you could slash or mow them down and cover with black plastic or cardboard for several weeks to smother them. Either way, once cleared, rake and level the strip so it’s neat while you wait on the landlord’s decision.
