Hi there, I was wondering if anyone had any plans or advice on building something like the image attached? Looking to build a set of 5-6 arbours that span from around my fenceline to the side of the house. Looking to do the cross bars not horizontal, but perhaps something close to a 20degree rise. Was hoping this may be possible with timber to keep it DIY, rather than a custom alumnimum product etc.Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks
Hi @bwhitty25,
Assuming it is open ended as in the 2nd picture then not possible with timber.
For a smaller structure it may be possible with engineering advice to use custom made steel right angle connector plates but inevitable timber main post twisting would create a lot of wobble out there at the end.
Cheers
Thanks Alan, correct that they will be open. With lengths spanning likely around 2 metres. If timber will not be suitable, what route would you recommend regarding getting something fabricated?
Hello @bwhitty25
It's great that you've received excellent advice from @AlanM52. If your arbour is stretching that far it will need to be made of steel or aluminium. I suggest engaging the services of a structural engineer and having them draw up a plan using steel. In this manner the structure will be built to code. Just to be on the safe side, I also suggest checking the rules and regulations of the local council regarding large structures built near around the house.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
