How to fix Ryobi RSH2445S shredder that has stopped running?

The shredder just started smoking under no load and then cut out.  After waiting 5 mins - hit the reset button.  The green start light remains on, then when you hit the start button, it goes into a very slow reverse for about 3 seconds and then cuts out.

From what you’ve described, it sounds like your Ryobi RSH2445S shredder has suffered either an electrical or motor-related fault. The smoke is a key sign that something inside overheated or failed, and the unusual behaviour (brief slow reverse then cut-out) suggests the safety circuitry is detecting a fault and shutting it down.

I would suggest you cease operation of the tool immediately.

If it is still under warranty, you can return it with your receipt to the store of purchase, where the Power Garden team will be able to assess it and assist with the next steps.

Unfortunately, if it is outside of the warranty period, it may be time for a replacement.
