How to fix patchy paint work?

Hi all, hoping for some advice as it's my first time doing a DIY Project. 

I am painting a shed like structure in my backyard, which was originally plastic, I primed it in which it was completely white and had used a warm brown paint as the finish. However, it looks very patchy and im not getting the dark brown colour that I'd hope for... How do I fix the patchy paint/ is there a way I can get the dark colour?

Would it be a good idea to buy a darker brown colour and paint over it? Or would that not work at all. Really looking for any suggestions to fix this.

How many coats of paint did you apply?

I'm fairly sure that the main reason you’re seeing uneven colour is that the paint hasn’t built up enough coverage yet. When painting over a white primer with darker colours, it often takes two or three coats to get a solid, even finish. The patchiness is usually just the lighter base showing through.

To me, it just looks like you need another coat or two of paint to even out the patchiness.

If, after extra coats, the colour still feels lighter than you’d like, then buying a darker shade of brown is an option. You don’t need to strip back or redo the primer; you can simply paint the darker colour over your existing coats once they’re fully dry. 

The key is patience and layering rather than trying to get full coverage in one go.
