How to hang a swing from house beam?

Hello all,

Hoping to get some advice on my plans to hang a swing underneath covered outdoor area in our property. The timber beam in question is 185mm by 42mm. The area is supported by being attached to the house via hangers as seen in the photos and on one side via 90mm by 90mm posts to the ground. The red dots in the photos mark the approximate planned hanging location.

The swing will be https://www.bunnings.com.au/swing-slide-climb-red-yellow-plastic-baby-swing-seat_p3320727 and this would be hung via two of these https://www.bunnings.com.au/swing-slide-climb-ductile-swing-hook_p3321589

It’s a fairly high up roof so likely I will need to add some extra length to the swing ropes and the plan is to do that via appropriate strength chain and d shackles.

I am unsure as to the best options to fix the swing hangers to the timber, and am thinking to use M12 hardware to fix this directly into the existing beams, but unsure what is best?

Any further advice or tips are appreciated!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about hanging a swing.

I suggest having a quick look at this discussion - How to hang swing from a plasterboard roof by @camryn. I understand that you are installing the swing on a timber beam, but you have to keep in mind that the beam has been designed with holding the roof structure only. It was not designed to hold an extra weight of 40kg or the dynamic forces it would generate while it swings.

Installing extra support to the timber beam is not something that can be quickly attached to your roof. In this instance, I suggest engaging the services of a registered builder. They will be able to determine what kind of timber beam will need to go across so that it can safely support the swing and the weight of the child. This means that it will be safe for you and your child when using the swing.

In regards to the fixings, I suggest using a nut and bolt configuration along with some washers to hold the Swing Slide Climb Ductile Swing Hook in place.

Good evening @schenkee,

The beam look good, the connector with six screws looks good.

The chair is only 1.4kg (plus the bub).

Very unlikely the swing hooks screws will give way; to be sure for each hook use two.

I’ve installed several hanging day beds and egg chairs. My go-to ceiling joist fastener is an M10-12 stainless ring bolt inserted straight through the joist. It’s very neat and in my opinion more secure than a screw will ever be. I always double up the nuts and apply thread locker.
