How to match wood stain colour?

Hi, 

I’m redoing a dinning table that was the old orange stain. I’ve sanded it back primed and painted the bottom and now I’m trying to get the right stain colour. I don’t mind what I have done with it now but I did want it to match more with the colour of the frames we have in the house. 

After sanding the top I white washed it and then applied monocel clear varnish satin which is oil based. What colour is recommended to get the table top from the current colour in the first picture above, to the colour of the frames in the second picture? 

And would I be able to apply this on top of the clear coat varnish?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your wood stain colour.

You've done a wonderful job with your first paint revamp. The table looks fantastic.

Wood stain matching is very difficult and getting an exact match is not likely. The best you can do is to go for a close match which involves trial and error. I propose bringing one of your picture frames to the store and comparing it to the stain and varnish sample boards to see which one is the closest. I recommend speaking to the senior paint specialist for more information.

Because you've painted a sealer on the timber surface it will be necessary to sand off the sealer in order to stain the timber top properly. Staining it now as is will result in the stain clumping together and not being properly absorbed.
