How to fix a 45mm piece of timber to brick?

Hi. I'm cat-proofing my balcony by installing cat netting. I am using Go-Go rails from CatEnclosureSupplies, but I want to secure the sides of the netting, and to do that, I want to screw a piece of timber to the brick, and then attach the rail and subsequently netting.

The timber is 4.5cm deep, and it will not be resting on the floor, but suspended and solely fixed to the brick.

How long of a screw do I need to adequately fix the wood to the brick?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

For a 45mm thick piece of timber, I would be using these 75mm Galvanised Timber Screws with Ramset 7 x 35mm Green Wall Plugs in the brick.

If you are using a long piece of timber, then you should have two screws side by side with two at the top and two at the bottom, then every 600mm along the height of the timber.

If it's just a small piece, use four screws, two at the top, two at the bottom.

Hi Jacob, thanks so much for your prompt reply. I've attached an image of the type of timber 'column' I am hoping to fix to the brick wall, which is ~4.1ishcm wide and deep. The other photo shows the brick wall I am hoping to fix it to, where the timber will be roughly 160cm tall. (Thus W: 4.1cm, 😧 4.1cm, H: 160cm).

I am just cautious because I want to ensure the timber is securely fixed to the brick. I hope this extra information can clarify if needed! Does your recommendation still apply?

(This will be my first solo DIY project so apologies for any lack of comprehension!)

Hi @triivk,

Yes, my advice still applies, just make sure that the screws go into the brick rather than the mortar, as it doesn't have the holding power you'll require.

Being 160cm high, I'd suggest using two side-by-side at the bottom, two at the top and then two additional pairs of screws evenly spaced between the top and bottom. You'll end up with a total of 8 screws.
