How do I stop my neighbour's weed from going into my side?

There is a wide gap under the fence between me and my neighbor. Weeds keeps on coming back. How do I stop these weeds from going into my side?

I'm thinking of installing this garden edging. Just hammer it down. I just need more suggestions please?

Also, I wanted to get rid of the weeds keeps on growing on my side. I'm thinking of removing the soil and adding weed mat and then adding mulch on top of it. Is that the right way?

Thank you for your question about preventing weeds from growing under your fence.

You've got a combination of what looks like Kikuyu grass runners and common broadleaf weeds. Kikuyu grass is extremely aggressive in how it spreads, so it is not particularly surprising that it is shooting through under your fence.

If you wanted to simply kill it, you could spray it with a glyphosate-based weedkiller such as Roundup, but this wouldn't prevent it from coming back, so you would need to do this each time it reemerges.

I think your plan to install some Icon Plastics 150mm x 10m Green Garden Edge would be a great start, as it would force the weeds to travel further underground in hopes of finding soil to establish themselves in. Unless your soil is particularly soft, it would be better to use a garden fork to help open up a channel in the soil and place the edging in before backfilling. As the edging is relatively thin, hammering it would likely damage it more than drive it down. Once in place, you can use these Icon Plastics 280 x 25mm Green Garden Edge Multi Pegs to lock it in place.

Excavating some soil, adding weed mat, and mulch would also certainly be worthwhile. If you can do this while installing the garden edging, so that the weed mat runs under the garden edging, this would be even better. You would need to make some small holes for the stakes, but that wouldn't be too big of an issue with the mulch on top.

Taking these steps would give you the best protection possible.
