Sand or mortar mix for laying pavers?

I have seen both sand and mortar used for laying pavers. My question is when to use what. I am planning to replace my grass with pavers. The area is 5 by 12 meters. 

Should I lay pavers like stepping stones i.e separated by 10 cm stones or lay them next to each other.

What should i use for base for the  pavers.

Ideally i wanted a size of 80 by 40 cm by 40 cm.

Before deciding whether to use sand or mortar for your pavers, the most important factor is having a level and well-compacted base. A solid base ensures stability and longevity, and with it, you can lay pavers directly on top. Sand is mainly used to help with fine adjustments, allowing you to level each paver perfectly, whereas mortar provides a firmer bond, adding weight beneath the pavers and making them less likely to shift. If you plan to lay your pavers side by side for a flat, continuous surface, a sand bed is usually sufficient and more forgiving. However, if you want gaps between the pavers, such as 10cm spaces for stones or gravel, mortar is better as it locks each paver in place when there’s nothing bordering them. 

Design and aesthetics also play a role: gaps can create a visually appealing and cost-effective pathway, while a tight, level surface feels more like a traditional patio. Additionally, it’s important to check the thickness and type of your pavers. Thicker concrete pavers can generally be laid on sand, but thinner pavers, such as porcelain or some natural stones, often require a mortar base to prevent cracking.
