How to water-proof concrete slab?

Hi Experts,

We are currently redoing a sunken living and the builders have informed us that the concrete slab (built in the 80s) has a high moisture content and this isn't a major concern but something to be away of. We are thinking of doing some DIY water proofing, not so much to keep water out but to create a barrier between the concrete slab and the carpet that will be laid. What steps/ products should we be using and as we get a lot of rain in our area do you see any concerns with doing this? The room is roughly 6m x 6m.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about waterproofing your concrete slab.

If this is going to become a living space or bedroom, I propose engaging the services of a professional as they will be aware of the rules and regulations of the local council. Waterproofing for a living space must be done professionally as any failures or defects in its application can cause mould and mildew infestation which is a health hazard. Plus, it also ensures compliance with safety and building codes.  

However, if you were wondering what product would be applicable, I propose looking at the Sika 10kg Sikalastic Waterproof Membrane it might be suitable for your needs, as it's designed to resist water pressure from the inside. But again, application must be done by a professional as it needs to be signed off.
