How to pave against deck?

Hi team, I’m looking at laying some stone pavers in an area for an outdoor table and chairs. Are there any issues placing the pavers up against merbau decking? Or should the pavers sit along the bottom edge of the deck? Seeing how much I need to dig out for the base layers! Thanks in advance.

It’s best to leave a small gap between the pavers and the decking rather than running them hard up against it @AdamMc, whether that is against the side of the deck or directly underneath the deck edge. When pavers are tight to timber decking, they tend to trap moisture, which is exactly what you want to avoid with merbau or any other decking timber. Trapped moisture reduces airflow, slows drying, and over time significantly increases the risk of decay, cupping, and premature deterioration of the deck boards and substructure.

Leaving a buffer gap allows water to drain freely and lets air circulate so the timber can dry out properly after rain or washing. It also reduces the chance of debris like dirt and leaves building up against the deck edge, which can hold moisture for long periods. Even treated or naturally durable timbers benefit from this separation, especially in areas that stay shaded or get less airflow.

From a practical point of view, that gap also makes life easier when you are working out your excavation depth. You can dig and build your paver base independently of the deck without worrying about undermining footings or bearers, and you avoid the risk of movement in the paving transferring stress into the deck over time. Pavers will always have some degree of movement, and keeping them independent is the safer long-term approach.

If you are worried about the look of a visible gap, it can be finished neatly with drainage gravel or a narrow strip of decorative stone, which still allows water to pass through while giving a clean edge. Overall, giving the decking a bit of breathing room is the healthier option and will help both the deck and the paving last longer.
