How to fix large ceiling crack?

Hi there,

I'd be grateful for any ideas/suggestions in tackling this ceiling crack. The main concern is the bigger one running horizontally. Do you think some joint compound would be enough, or perhaps first drill into joists to support it a bit? I got into the roof and located the crack from above, and could put some backer board (although slightly tricky access due to ducted air con.

With a crack like that, @tjc888, it’s important to investigate further before deciding on a repair. If the plasterboard is cracked all the way through, joint compound alone won’t provide a long-term fix. In those areas, you’ll need some support from behind and screws through the front to stabilise the board. In many cases, the best approach is to cut out the damaged section back to the ceiling joists and install a new, structurally sound piece of plasterboard. This will ensure the ceiling is level, solid, and ready for finishing.

Given the differing heights in the cracked area and the extent of fine cracks around it, a simple patch isn’t likely to last. After replacing the section, you can tape, compound, and paint it to blend with the existing ceiling. Also, because this is an older home, make sure the materials you’re handling do not contain asbestos before starting the repair, as older cement sheeting can contain it.
