How to fix handrail on Queenslander outdoor staircase?

Hi all,

One of the handrails has come off my outdoor staircase (Queenslander replica style).  I have tried the recommended wood glue/liquid nails but it didn't hold.  It fits snuggly at each end between the posts, and there is nowhere for me to nail or screw.  How do I fix this?

It would really help to see a couple of photos of the handrail and how it connects to the posts and balusters, as that will make it much easier to give you specific advice. If you need a hand uploading images, just let me know.

That said, glue alone is very rarely enough for a handrail, especially outdoors. Traditionally, handrails are not glued at all, they’re held in place purely with mechanical fixings. Even if it looks like there’s nowhere to nail or screw, there usually is.

In most cases, the handrail is fixed diagonally rather than straight through. For example, you can fix through the top of the balusters up into the underside of the handrail on an angle, or nail or screw diagonally through the handrail into the posts at each end. Often there will be fixings driven from the top of the handrail down into the post, and also from underneath the handrail up into the post, both on an angle. These angled fixings are what give the handrail its strength.

Depending on the spacing, it can be a bit fiddly to get a drill in between the balusters, but that’s usually how these are secured. Once mechanically fixed, you can add a small amount of exterior-grade adhesive as a supplement, but it shouldn’t be relied on to hold the rail.
