How to paint PVC panels?

Hello,

I am wanting to paint these panels gloss black and was wondering what products would be best to achieve good looking results. They are for a feature wall and unfortunately there aren’t any solid black options for panels (they all seem to have a wood texture or aren’t completely black)

I am wanting to to kind of turn out like the photo below. Alternatively I could paint some MDF moulding black and make my own with a backing board if you think that would be a better option?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @STHY. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about Perma.

I do have some concerns with painting these particular panels because they are made from PVC plastic. Plastics in general are notoriously difficult to get paint to reliably stick to without specialised surface preparation and the right primers. It is potentially possible to paint them, but especially on a new product I would not advise it unless you are confident with sanding, priming and accepting the risk that it might not give a long-lasting finish.

Before going down that route, have you considered the SpecRite 2700 x 600 x 21 mm Black Oak Timber Acoustic Panel instead? These are already black and have a timber surface that takes paint and finishes far more predictably than PVC, which means you are much more likely to end up with a professional-looking result without chasing adhesion issues.

If you do decide to paint the existing PVC panels, you would need to roughen the surface with fine abrasive, use a high-adhesion primer formulated for plastics, and then a quality enamel paint. Even then, it is more work and risk than starting with a panel that already has the look you want.
