How to re-paint pavers?

Hello there,

I wish to repaint these pavers. I am interested in hearing whether it’s worth trying to sandblast these pavers, the paint is almost impossible to remove . I’ve used paint removers & pressure washers. I’m also concerned at the mainly negative

reviews of the berger and dulux paving paints including the stone finish dulux . It is 300 bucks but I would do it if I know the results will be there. Here are my photos , interested in your thoughts.

When it comes to repainting pavers, most paving paints are designed to go onto a sound surface, either bare pavers or previously painted pavers, where the existing coating is still well-bonded and not flaking or chipping. In your case, particularly on the pavers near the gate, the paint is no longer in a sound condition. There is visible lifting and failure, which means products like the Berger or Dulux paving paints are not suitable to go straight over the top. Sandblasting may remove some paint, but with multiple old layers already present, it is unlikely to restore the surface back to a truly sound base and it can also damage the pavers themselves.

Across the rest of the area, while the pavers are in better shape, there is still widespread chipping, especially along the joints. The multiple coats applied over time mean the surface integrity has been compromised, so even a high-end paving paint is at risk of failing again. 

Given what I can see, this really shifts the recommendation towards a product specifically designed to recoat previously painted concrete surfaces that are no longer in perfect condition. The only product that genuinely fits that brief is the Rust-Oleum Concrete and Garage Floor Paint system, used in conjunction with the Rust-Oleum 3.78L Concrete and Garage Recoat Primer. This system is designed to bind down old coatings and provide a stable base for the new finish, which makes it far more forgiving in situations like yours.

The main drawback is colour choice, as it is limited to a couple of options such as battleship grey and gunmetal metallic. If those colours work for you, this system gives you the best chance of a durable result without the expense and uncertainty of sandblasting. If colour flexibility is more important, then removal back to bare pavers would be required, but that comes with significant effort, cost and no guarantee of success.
