Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER login="Tren" uid="22693"></LI-USER>. It's fantastic to have you join us and many thanks for your question.

As this is a personal project that <LI-USER login="Yorky88" uid="535"></LI-USER> has put together, I would presume that he hasn't written any plans. I've had a look at the construction and to the best of my ability have replicated it in the rendering below. I've isolated the parts to give you a better idea of how it might have been assembled. Timber lengths and sizes will vary depending on what types of pallets you can get your hands on.

We look forward to hearing all about your projects around the house and garden, and we'd encourage you to let us know anytime you need assistance or had something to share.

Please let me know if you have any particular questions.

All the individual pieces of greenery are secured quite well, they clip in, and as this is out of the weather under our alfresco area its looks the same as the day we installed it.

An inspiring project! I think a simplified version of your hide-away bench design could be made as a table for people who like doing puzzles (eg jigsaw puzzles). They could leave the puzzle partly done and fold it away from interference by others, while using the top surface for other things. Just an idea for those who are, or know, a puzzler.

Wont be perfect but definitely better than it is.
The problem with above the oven and below the bench is that the hooks securing the stove take up some of the depth, so I don’t think I will be able to have a piece sit flush in this space. I will post another photo so that it hopefully makes sense.

 thanks again!

Hi <LI-USER uid="21507"></LI-USER>,

To add to <LI-USER uid="1050"></LI-USER>'s helpful response, you might like to consider Hybrid Vinyl Planks. They come with the underlay already attached and don't need to be glued down. You should find this step-by-step guide useful: How To Lay Vinyl Planks.

I recently replaced some horrible old lino roll that was in my laundry. It wasn't stuck down to the concrete, so didn't even think I might need to glue down the new lino. It's been around six months now, and I haven't seen it moving or curling at the edges. The only fixing I actually did was a cover strip on the door entrance.

From the picture, it looks like one of the doors is damaged at the joining edge...? There appears to be some overlapping left, as would be expected to provide a seal to the door, just below the latch and a bit at the top. Would that be correct? If so, the broken lip will need to be replaced by a strip of timber of the same size as that which has broken off. It may be best, in order to attach it successfully for strength, to use an L shaped moulding (something like this https://www.bunnings.com.au/porta-20-x-20mm-2-4m-tasmanian-oak-round-edge-external-corner-moulding_p0080185 ), which would need to be trimmed to fit. The moulding will protude on the door face, but can be made to look like it belongs there.

Perhaps the moulding that Mitchell suggested could be trimmed for the job, which would provide even more overlap, and the bit that needs trimming will be kept out of sight.

<LI-USER uid="22544" login="archerwinmakes"></LI-USER>,

Footer sizes are determined by the type of soil you have in your location, and your local council might be of some assistance in determining this. As a general rule of thumb, a 300 x 300 x 450mm hole would be a good starting point.

You can use anchor stirrups, and the product you use will be determined by how much of the soil you intend to remove. Australian Builders 20kg Quick Set Concrete would be suitable for setting the stirrups in place.

Since you'll be lifting the joist 36mm, I'd suggest the Builders Edge Pedestal Foot Smallfoot 35 - 60mm would be perfect to use instead of L brackets. You'd place them every meter along the joist. Alternatively, a bracket similar to Carinya 100 x 100 x 50 x 4.5mm Hot Dipped Galvanised Angle Bracket would be suitable.

Re: How to design a stable dinning or outdoor table

Hi <LI-USER uid="4740" login="paulmp"></LI-USER>,

The fulcrum and tipping point of the table will be determined by the weight of the table and distance the edge is past the leg. You intend to use a 700mm wide leg set on a 1200mm wide table and the edge of the table would be 250mm past the leg on either side. I don't believe 250mm will provide enough leverage for a child's weight to tip the table. I've contacted Rapidmesh, and they have advised that as long as the tabletop is centred over the legs with the weight being evenly distributed, they can not see any issue.

In their product image below, you'll note that they have an overhang not dissimilar to what your intentions are. I would encourage you to use a top with a decent amount of weight to help counteract any weight placed on the edge of the table. You might be interested in using our laminated hardwood panels.

Hello <LI-USER uid="21507"></LI-USER>

I would rather suggest to put another sheet of lino on top of the existing one. However there are certain conditions that must be met in order for this to work.

1. The current lino must be in good condition. No tearing, bubbling, flaking, cuts or the like.

2. The current lino must not be pinned or cut in such a way as it is being held in place by a bathroom overflow waste.

3. The current floor area must be easy enough for you to lay down new lino without having to take out any of the appliances in the bathroom. ( vanity, toilet, pedestal basin etc. )

A thorough clean must be performed on the old lino lino and a light sand performed to facilitate the adhesion of the new lino. You can either use sticky back lino with adhesive already on it. It comes in squares and easily laid out. You can use ordinary lino in rolls but you would need to buy contact adhesive to keep it down. The other option of course is to remove the old lino and just put new lino on. The choice is yours.

Red

Re: How to completely remove bamboo from yard?

Hey team, just an update on the bamboo removal project. Some before and after pics for anyone who might be dealing with the same issue. Basically what we did was:

1) Chopped down the culms to as close to the ground as possible so that we were left with an effective "bamboo stump/root system", equivalent to a tree stump for bamboo. We used an angle grinder.

2) Used an axe, mattock and shovel to break the bamboo stump/root system in to 15/30cm x 15/30cm squares. Dug them out. This took aaaaaages and was pretty rough work. We modelled this after this YouTube video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq4iB1Z6LXE&t=266s

3) Once the large bamboo stump/root system was removed, we tilled the soil mostly by hand. Using a small mattock and spade, removing all remnant roots and culms to try and make sure growth won't reoccur.

4) Used Yates Tree and Blackberry Killer - https://www.bunnings.com.au/yates-250ml-tree-and-blackberry-weed-killer-concentrate_p3010221 - on any smaller root systems that were difficult to remove. And we're monitoring the soil for new culms coming out and will keep monitoring for the next 3-12 months before replanting.

Have fun!

If you wish to take the extra step, you can use MDF or dressed pine and prime and paint to the exact same color as your current kitchen. I noticed that your oven front is bigger than the allowed space in your oven cabinet. In an ideal situation if time permitted the oven front would have been measured and the space adjusted. Since this is our current situation my suggestion will only apply to what you currently have. Below are a some images that present several situations you may find yourself in while attempting to cover the gap with oven filler panels. Should you have any questions please don't hesitate to post here at workshop, remember your trying to gather information there are no silly or funny questions. Please keep us updated and possibly a post on the final solution you have arrived at.

Red

Hi <LI-USER uid="17593" login="Maymay"></LI-USER>,

It appears you might need an astragal. An astragal is a piece of hardware used on a pair of doors to seal the gap between the doors when they are closed. We have the Porta 50 x 30mm 2.1m Tasmanian Oak Round Astragal Moulding which would be mounted on these doors' exterior. The T section's bottom is mounted to the inside edge of the door, allowing the top of the T section to span across the gap. Once installed, you'll need to open the doors one at a time.

The only alternative to this I can think of would be some self-adhesive strip stuck to one of the door's edges. Perhaps something like Moroday 9mm x 4.5mm x 5m Black E-Shaped Weatherseal could be used.

Let me mention <LI-USER uid="12068" login="TedBear"></LI-USER> and <LI-USER uid="1050" login="redracer01"></LI-USER> to see if they had any other ideas.

I've just moved into my first home and am doing a few jobs to freshen it up a little. I'm planning to redo the bathroom properly in a few years when I can afford it, so I was just planning to give the walls a fresh coat of paint and call it a day. Unfortunately, what I didn't remember from my visits was this ugly flooring. Given that I'm going to redo things in not all that long I don't want to faff about with waterproofing etc, but was wondering if there are any simple ways I can cover it up? I've seen a couple of people talk about painting flooring, does this actually work long term or will it just wear off? Seems a bit dodge to me.

<LI-USER uid="52"></LI-USER> What a brilliant post - thanks so much for taking the time to write that.

Sounds so much like my Dad. I come from a naval working class city in England called Portsmouth. My Dad did an apprenticeship in the dockyard there, and then did night school to become qualified as an electrical and mechanical engineer. His passion was boats and he built a couple over the years from basic fibreglass shells. He also loved engines and made a pit in his garage. He also had a small steam engine he'd built himself that we used to put meths into and get going.

But he could do carpentry and building work.

And like you, my job was handing tools to him. And like you I wasted a lot of time and opportunities to learn more. But hey, I seem to be becoming my father in lots of ways a I get older - and these days I'm actually quite proud of that rather than dreading it!!

Hi <LI-USER uid="21470" login="Loulou2"></LI-USER>,

You could cut Melamine down to the correct size; it can then be glued and screwed into position. It's a bit hard to tell from the picture, but is there 16mm worth of depth so it can end up flush with the existing face?

Let me mention <LI-USER uid="1050" login="redracer01"></LI-USER> to see if he can offer some suggestions.

It's fine for water to run down there. The concrete slab level would be below the damp course layer in your brick wall, and the water will disperse under the slab.

The Good Times decking frames need to be attached somehow, whether with the supports into the ground or L brackets onto concrete. The only reason you would fix to a wall is that you cannot fix them to the ground.

That's an expansion joint which needs to be there. The gap looks about right to me, and I would be hesitant to suggest you fill it with anything. There shouldn't be any reason to worry about this gap as it prevents your bricks and concrete slab from cracking.

Hi <LI-USER uid="22139" login="vaibhs"></LI-USER>,

Hebel is to be drilled with the hammer function turned off and at a medium to slow speed. You mustn't use the hammer function as I might crack the Hebel. You will be putting it in drill-mode which removes the torque function. The torque function is used when fixing screws.

Hi Smithy (<LI-USER uid="4197"></LI-USER>),

It appears <LI-USER uid="7175"></LI-USER> has used the Good Times system of decking. This includes the frames and frame supports. There are frame supports running along the wall and I would hazard a guess to say that they did not fix the frames to the house.

We look forward to hearing more about your own decking project and would encourage you to let us know if you need any assistance.

Backyard Reno - Update

Hi all.

Just an update from my last post (a while ago) on the backyard reno. I've tweaked a few things since then and the lawn and plants have settled in a bit better now. We also entertained some friends a family over the holidays and we definitely love how it feels out here.

After.

Before

It would be helpful to hear which rotary hammer drill you are using. Generally, you would put the drill into chisel mode, which stops it spinning. This is done via a large switch which should depict a drill and chisel. This mode allows you to chisel the brickwork/cement away.

I look forward to seeing what product you have and providing some assistance.

I chose the colonial profile as it was similar to the 140 colonial baseboards the room has, which I plan on keeping after working on the flooring. The 11mm thickness also matched the lip of the existing crown moulding for a seamless transition.

If someone is looking for a more modern look, consider pencil round or tri quad.

Hi <LI-USER uid="22137" login="newfast"></LI-USER>,

The sealer you used is penetrative and has a water-like consistency. It has potentially been sucked down into the crack, and you might need to do a couple more applications to build it up by filling the crack.

I'd encourage you to do an isolating test on the areas to determine where the water is penetrating. Pour water in locations along the cracks and see if it penetrates the crack. You might need to do this in several areas to locate the issue.

Re: What age did you get into DIY? (And what was your first DIY Project?)

My dad can make, do and fix anything really. He's a fitter turner by trade, has better carpentry and metal work skills than most carpenters I seen and has tickets/licenses for just about everything else. He has a 10x10m workshop at his place which is more secure than the house and is packed to the rafters with tools and materials. So naturally he does everything for himself and others when it comes to cars, houses and more. This gave me a huge opportunity as a kid to learn and while I have learned a lot from my dad since I was a kid, looking back, I wasted a lot of time/opportunity to learn even more. Kids will be kids though, right...

So I used to potter around with him making things or just handing him tools. I don't remember the very first projects but some of the memorable ones include floor tiling a whole house, brick paving a large patio area and building a fishpond.

Once I bought my first home I started building up my tool collection and doing odd jobs on my own including laminate flooring, small retaining walls, digging/installing soakwells. This laundry reno was probably my first DIY project worth sharing which involved a range of skills and really added value to my home. One DIY project that meant a lot to me was building my kid's first cubby house - it's nothing like the double storey one my dad built me with a slide, flying fox, fireman's pole, balcony area for a small inflatable pool, etc but it's enough for the space we had 😊

And from there I have stopped. I really enjoy the challenge and satisfaction/ride that comes from DIY, especially as I pass my knowledge and skills and to my kids.

Hi <LI-USER uid="22533" login="Alisonop"></LI-USER>,

It appears there might have been some confusion about the product and custom sizes you require. They are correct that the Bellessi range is sold in panels, but we also offer custom made and installed splashbacks through Essential Glass. Essential glass will measure up the exact sizes you need and cut their panels to size for you. This service is available in all Metro locations, and we can also make enquiries for non-Metro locations. You just need to speak to our team at the Special Order desk and request an in-home measure and quote for an Essential Glass splashback.

Please let me know if you need any assistance with making the booking as I would be more than happy to contact the store on your behalf.

That is really spectacular! I have some experience with woodworking, and I would most likely pass on a project like this, I'm just not skilled enough. I'm in awe of the build's quality and can only imagine the effort that went into it. I trust you are really proud of how it turned out as it looks far superior to many store-bought cots I've seen.

I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your projects. Well done.

I'm a newbie on the woodworking scene. I like to teach myself things. I do not own a router and won't buy one just yet. I spent well over $200 fixing those chairs so I'm saving some pennies for now. I'd like to just use the tools I have. I'm not starting work on the bench just get. I'm having space from the workshop as I have things to do around the house.

Re: How to disassemble a pallet

Hi <LI-USER uid="20460" login="JI"></LI-USER>,

I've disassembled many pallets by hand with just a pinch bar. If you take your time, you won't split many boards, but there are generally at least one or two casualties in each pallet. There are different qualities of pallets out there; sometimes, every board will split no matter what you do. These pallets I move on from.

You can try a tool similar to the Mumme 1260mm Reno Bar which is designed for pallets. I haven't personally used this tool, but it looks effective.

Depending on how many pallets you wish to take apart and whether this will be an ongoing hobby, I'd strongly recommend a reciprocating saw. I currently use a Ryobi One+ 18V Gen II Reciprocating Saw - Skin Only, and it is amazing! With this method, you simply slice through the nails behind the boards and separate them with no splitting at all. With practice, you can disassemble an entire pallet into useable boards in under 5 minutes.

What do you plan to use your pallets for? You might like to check out our Top 10 most popular pallet projects for inspiration.

Hi <LI-USER uid="22511" login="Wouldy"></LI-USER>,

You might like to consider using a laminated panel and cutting it to suit with a jigsaw. If you wanted to get really fancy, you could then use a router to round over the corners. I believe this would be a simple and effective way to put the coffee table back into use; it would also give you a break from your last project.

I'll be keen to see what you do with it.

Re: Connector for hose reel

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER uid="22683" login="Beccc"></LI-USER>. It's fantastic that you've joined us and many thanks for your question.

To connect your hose to this unit, you first need to remove any click-on connections. You will feed the bare hose end through the reel and push it onto the black barb fitting. It is held in place by a hose clamp which you must purchase separately. Many hose reels use the click-on fitting internally, this can leak and pop off and the clamped option is superior in my opinion.

The reel is then connected to your tap with a tap to reel connector.

The pedestal feet are designed to sit on top of the concrete <LI-USER uid="22455" login="Kalai11"></LI-USER>. You can glue them down with Selley's liquid nails if you wish.

Ekodeck is a great alternative to traditional timber decking as there's no ongoing maintenance which needs to be done. It's weather-resistant and doesn't require oiling, painting or sealing. It's also rot, decay and termite resistant with no additional treatments.

The Quickfix nailless system saves you time on installation and leaves your deck free from fasteners. The clips establish the gaps on your boards and there is no need to space them yourself. It's a fantastic way of getting a clean and professional-looking install to your decking boards.

I told my wife before the birth of our first child that I'd make all the nursery furniture. No idea why, just on a whim, with no experience in woodworking she though it was a bit mad Since then I've kept my word. This is the cot i made. It has two drawers the width of the cot which Is enough room for all the cot linens and blankets.

The fold down front I was a bit concerned it would act as a ladder however two children through it and zero escapes.Making custom spring loaded latches which were concealed into the gate frame was a fun challenge.

A great way to learn to do mortice and tenon joints is to make a cot with rectangular bars, not to mention learning to use a router and a round over bit for each edge of each paling.

If I had my time again I'd invest In a spray gun. Painting those railings by hand took way too long.

A mistake I made was an error in design. The vertical posts are solid with the bed base. Which is great for strength however I couldn't fit it through the house and into baby's room. We had to manoeuvre it through the window before final assembly.

I have free reign with this one and it us mine to keep. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. Those chairs were a massive job on my own and I needed a break.
