Need some advice to fix bathtub tap leaking. Please see attached video. It appears hot tap on the left needs fixing as water drop are hot coming from middle tap. Please advice if left tap requires opening or center from where water is coming. Also any detailed instructions with opening tab would be appreciated

Shower Valve- DIY or plumber fix?

I’m seeing conflicting information about whether I should attempt to fix it on my own (DIY beginner) & if it’s even legal for me to attempt in Victoria? G'day everyone!

We are going to possibly discuss the most sensitives of sensitives. Controversial? You bet! Life changing? Some say yes! Has it held marriages together? Well....I leave that up to you.

So it’s time to replace the toilet seat. How hard can it be? By my last count of the seat display at Bunnings toilet seat isle there were over twenty five types of seats with various sizes and fittings. Going in to the store and telling the service team that your seat is standard might prove to be a bit difficult to narrow down.

Believe it or not I often tell customers to bring their seat in. Take it off the toilet bring it to the garden and give it a once over with the garden hose. Wipe to dry and put it in a bag and your half way there. Simply match your old seat to the new seat sizes and compare mounting kits. Once the service team has this sorted out all you need is to install your new seat.

However should it prove to be difficult to bring your seat in I suggest the following.

1. Using a tape measure, measure the widest point of the seat from left to right. Let’s type that in to our phone as width.

2. Next we measure from front to back. Place the tip of the tape measure on top of the hinge of the seat. Where the toilet seat cover meats the actual seat. Do not measure from the mounting point hinge of the toilet seat. Let’s type that in as length.

3. What about the hinges? Most generic seats have adjustable hinges that go from 70mm all the way to 180mm. But all information you bring with will definitely help. So measure from the outside of the hinge left to right. We will type this in as hinge width.

4. Last but not the least, take at least 2 photos of your seat. One closed and one open, make sure that it encompasses the whole seat and that you are not too close that we only get half a picture.

Remember even if we get it all right sometimes it does not work and we may have to order you a special order seat. Remember that as long as you don’t break the hygienic seal of the seat you can still return it to the store for an exchange.

I hope this has cleared up some of the rumors and misconceptions of how to replace your toilet seat. No it does not involve an engineering degree or witch craft. Having the correct information with you will help you make the correct choice first time all the time. Good luck and stay safe!

Tiles or Hanwood for the bathroom? What are you thoughts please?

Hi there!

I have some new ceramic tiles which were "given" a decade ago, (brought over from Bali) that can go in my bathroom but I don't particularly like them greatly.

However with 100% moisture levels in corners of the old laminate currently there now time for a fix.

So should I use these tiles, FREE (a friend who has started a handyman business recently has offered to do so, he's done tiling but not waterproof before but used to be an engineer) or should I go for a hybrid tile or Hanwood - https://www.bunnings.co.nz/hanwood-7-5mm-classic-oak-wpc-waterproof-flooring_p0014474

Cracked bathroom vanity door due to water

Seeking bathroom layout advice and recommendations

Hi folks, looking for some advice please on layout for a bathroom renovation, where a bathtub is being removed and a toilet put into the existing bathroom, and where the existing toilet is, building a compact ensuite to the second bedroom around that, so turning one bathroom into two. Here are some photos and drawings of the current and proposed layout of the original bathroom which is 1630mm wide and 2570mm long. NB: I will be redoing the floors (with a family friend’s help) due to damage.

With the proposed layout, placement of the new toilet on the left is due to the window opening being on the right. Placement of the showerhead and screen is flexible, are they ok on the left, with a ceiling exhaust fan on the right? Basically does the placement work, or am I overlooking anything maybe plumbing-wise? The potential use of barn doors is to save space. Also looking for recommendations on type of shower, the frameless option I think helps make it feel more spacious and looks modern, but I don’t know how easy they are to install?

The standalone toilet is 820mm wide by 1650 long, and as an ensuite will be a space of 820mm by 2570mm. What kind of shower enclosure is best, and what is the largest vanity that would still work in the small space?

Overhead laundry cupboards

Well here they are, couldn't wait until the overhead laundry cupboards were completed, over the weekend I installed my overhead laundry cupboards, as it is not fully completed, I still need to fit the side and bottom panels, hopefully the glass I ordered will be in by this week, I am using a glass called Broadline.

I will post more photo's when the project is complete.

16mm melamine sheets cut for carcass

I had to router the sawn edges to remove chipping of melamine.

Carcasses built, I made them in two parts for ease of lifting/installation.

Doors were made from Tassie oak, 42x 19mm DAR timber.

I routered the sides to match existing cupboard doors in laundry

I drill too many shelving holes, lesson learned, only drill what you need.

I made the doors approx 12mm longer than the cupboard, so I don't need any handles, it also looks neater.

Installing cupboards, note the homemade overhead cupboard jacks, they were just right for the job at hand.

Carcasses installed.

Now I just need to install the bottom panel and two side panels.

How to go about replacing damaged kickboard

I totally have no idea how to go about replacing or fixing this damaged laundry cabinet kickboard (I think that's what it's called). I have not done any work of this nature. If I remove them (with the intention of replacing), will there be any structure supporting the cabinet so it won't collapse on me? I can't see any nail or screw holding the kickboard either. Are they glued?

Is there another way to fix this?

Just wanted to share with everyone our affordable vanity ensuite install. Trying to keep the cost down, we did the install ourselves and sold the old vanity on eBay. It was a tight space, so we went for a narrow vanity unit and also put in a medicine cabinet. Most of the plumbing supplies I bought from Bunnings, while the vanity/sink/cabinet from Ikea.

I am doing a laundry renovation and I have a top loader which is quite new so don't want to change but there does not seem to be many designs that incorporate a top loader. its a weird shape and design.any help would be great! Painting aluminium shower frames

I've dismantled my framed shower which is green in colour and most lengths look to be powder coated but a few are possibly painted?

Will I need to use an etch primer before I spray it with dulux epoxy ennamel?

Everywhere I look it says not to use an etch primer if the surface is already painted but unsure if powder coating is considered a paint? So I'm unsure whether to use the primer first or if it'll make any difference?

Should I sand down the aluminium a bit until it's dull then apply primer?

As you can see a few lengths have scratching on them like on the left which have a different finish to them like they're painted but majority are in the same condition as the one on the right And look to be powder coated i think

Anyone have any ideas?

Seeking laundry reno input

Hi all. My hubby and me are trying to do our house up to prep it for sale, hopefully in the next 12-18 months.

Neither of us have a trades background, so we are learning as we go.

I’d love some ideas that are budget conscious for doing up our awful laundry.

We aren’t planning to move any of the plumbing or power points, but definitely taking out the sink cabinet and removing the tiles on the wall.

At the moment I’m thinking of getting either a light grain laminate bench top or a white one, and also planning to install vinyl planks on the floor. The trims of the window and doors are going to be white but we are splurging and getting a painter to do that after several dummy spits having done it in the bedrooms ourselves.

I’m clueless in relation to cabinets and what to do with the wall. I can only use the side of the laundry that is pictured, as the door opens inward onto the other wall, which then also has access into the toilet.

I’ve attached pictures of the current laundry (please pretend you can’t see the utter mess it is at the moment!) and some measurements.

Any ideas, input, or advice would be super appreciated as I’ve looked at so many different setups online that I feel completely overwhelmed with choices.

Hello everyone...

I wanted to hang some brooms and dustpans off the laundry door to keep everything tidy. I looked around, and there were some plastic and metal holders you can buy. From my last job, I had some leftover timber and stain from making my computer desk.

Materials from Bunnings

untreated Pine 30 X 70 X 400mm
Wood screws
Everhang 30-40mm Broom Holder - 2 Pack ($5)
240 grit sand paper
Silicon
Linseed Oil Stain (IKEA-$10)
Steel Hooks (IKEA-$2))

Steps
Sand and stain the wood, let it dry for a day. Mark out Broom-Holder on the wood and pre-drill holes. I placed mine at 60mm from the edge. Then mark the position of your fixing screw in between the Broom Holder as this will hide the fixing. Pre-drill for mounting. Measure out where to place the holder; for me it was 1500mm from the floor to the top of the holder. Add silicon or other adhesive to the back of the wooden holder. Mount the wooden holder through your pre-drilled holes and make sure it is level. Attach the Broom Holder through your pre-drill holes and any other hooks. It keeps everything tidy and if any of the attachments or hooks break over time, they can be easily replaced.

Update: It has been several months and we use it all the time. The Everhang broom holder grips really well and should last a while.

I'm finding that there are only a limited and standard size variety of dog doors (many with poor reviews regarding quality) on the market and for the extra large size (what I need) very expensive..

I feel if I'm going to pay a lot of money for a dog door, if im in control of how it's made, I'm in control of the quality..

Covering old linoleum flooring

I've just moved into my first home and am doing a few jobs to freshen it up a little. I'm planning to redo the bathroom properly in a few years when I can afford it, so I was just planning to give the walls a fresh coat of paint and call it a day. Unfortunately, what I didn't remember from my visits was this ugly flooring. Given that I'm going to redo things in not all that long I don't want to faff about with waterproofing etc, but was wondering if there are any simple ways I can cover it up? I've seen a couple of people talk about painting flooring, does this actually work long term or will it just wear off? Seems a bit dodge to me.

Bathroom renovations - How to remove tiles and deal with rising damp?

Hi,

This is my first post here and my first attempt at some DIY renovating. We realised the bathroom was leaking a while back with rising damp evident in the kitchen wall (two photos) so stopped using it and are only using the en-suite at the moment. I assumed a dodgy job had been done previously and the bathroom had not been waterproofed properly. I’ve lifted the tiles from the shower recess and think the blue on the wall shows waterproofing but can’t see any on the floor. I was wondering what the tiles had been layed on ... I’ve put some pictures up. I assume I will need to get a professional in to deal with the rising damp and was wondering if anyone can give me an estimate of the cost? Also, is there a way to take the wall tiles off without taking g chunks of brick out with the glue blobs.

I thought this may be of interest...
We are getting down to what are (hopefully) the final stages of our extension & renovation on our 20-year old home that we've been in for around 5-years. I've moved on to demolishing the old main bathroom which shares a common wall with the ensuite bathroom.
I knew we had a leak somewhere from staining I had noticed on the particleboard flooring when under the house and from some mould in the back of a wardrobe so this disaster wasn't unexpected.
This looks extreme but, as I said, wasn't unexpected. The only real issue is it means we'll have to change around the order of work to fix it all.
In some respects we are very lucky as this wall is just a dividing wall, it's not structural or load-bearing.

I thought that this may be of interest for two reasons;

- Waterproofing - this failure of the waterproofing in both shower stalls (it looks like both the ensuite & main bathrooms stalls leaked) highlights the importance of having waterproof done correctly with the appropriate materials.
Despite what the TV renovation shows or some online sources would have you believe waterproofing is something that is a very precise job that should not be approached lightly and there is zero room for mistakes. Anything but a 100% seal will result in failure over time.
If you hire a professional to do your waterproofing ensure they are appropriately experienced & qualified and the work carries a suitable guarantee.
If you plan on doing it yourself do your research through reputable sources, such as manufacturers webpages, for preparation & application information and take your time to do it right. Follow all the steps & don't try to cut corners. There is zero margin for error with waterproofing.

- The ominous clues - if you look at my second photo you'll see the mould and staining evident. This looks a bit messy as I've been banging the wall from behind so prior to this it just showed as mould, minor staining and in one small area swelling of the MDF skirting.
This was evident in the back of a walk-in wardrobe so could have easily been dismissed as nothing more than 'dampness'.
Now look at the image of the extent of the damage.
That is the reality of what is hidden inside the wall behind a little bit of mould and staining. This mould spot could easily have been dismissed as nothing much while your wall & floor were quietly collapsing...

So... the dual-edged moral to this story is... take waterproofing of wet areas very, very seriously and never underestimate what may be going on behind a small patch on your wall or ceiling.

That small mould area may be the tiny symptom of a major issue.

Shower door issue. Need to fix it.

My glass screen shower door will not shut. You really have to slam it hard. It is getting annoying and I want to fix it. Im not sure what the issue is as it never used to be this bad. It did used to get a tiny bit stuck but I would just pull a little bit harder and it would close. I moved in here 6 months ago and I reckon without me noticing it really, it got worse.

I can't work out the issue. There is a piece of rubber at the bottom of the shower screen in the corner. Then a piece where the door would usually sit in once shut. The issue is that rubber piece is not going over that frame. It is almost like the rubber has slipped down from the top causing an overbite.

Does anyone know what the issue is and how I fix it please?

How do I reconfigure the bathroom/laundry/kitchen to maximise space?

I have existing kitchen, porch, laundry and bathroom that need upgrading and I'd like to maximise the usable space but so daunted on where to start. The laundry is currently used as a dumping ground and far too big, the porch entry door can be moved to line up with the external face of the house so we can incorporate the extra area there too (although it will need to remain a walkway through to the living room). The image is from our original house plans, not much has changed since 1940 except the linen cupboard and bath are gone and there's now a shower there. The top wall on the image is the external face of the house and the bottom wall is structural but the other walls between the rooms can move. The depth right along is 2.42m. The width of the rooms at the moment are kitchen 2.8m, porch 0.95m, laundry 1.35m, bathroom 2.03m

We were thinking we could use part of the laundry closest to the kitchen as pantry, add the rear part to the bathroom but can't work out what items we could fit in the bathroom (will it be big enough for a bath, shower, toilet & vanity without looking cramped - don't want a shower over bath so otherwise will forgo the bath). We thought perhaps the washing machine could go in the area marked on the plan as 'cyl' which is the old hot water cylinder which has been moved to the corner of the laundry marked as the red circle.

Any ideas on configuration and especially around the bathroom as that is the most urgent and we are thinking we could upgrade that in isolation first.

Bathroom towel rail project - job done

Just finished my towel rail for the bathroom. I used a piece of pine picket fence. The dowel is Tasmania oak. I have used two black brackets. I have used a fast grab good adhesive and attached the towel rail to the bathroom tiles - as I did not want to chance breaking tiles by drilling. At either end of the dowel are end caps of plumbing pipes made in bronze - just as a fancy finish! Everything purchased from Bunnings.

Replacement toilet tank

I have just found a crack in my 20 year old Fowler toilet tank. Purchased an Estilo replacement tank but the existing mounting bolts don't line up with the new tank holes. Will have to drill 3 new holes through tiles and wet-area sheeting to fit wall plugs for Estilo mounting bracket but suspect I will not be drilling into timber. Worried that bracket might not support tank. Would appreciate any thoughts?? Thankyou. Peter

Concrete Walls - Wet Room Bathroom Reno

Hi, my name is Kat and I have just bought my 4th house, but the first to need urgent renovations (1950s concrete bungalow w cement tile roof). While I can do most DIY basic repairs, this will be the first time I have needed to pull down walls and remove major fittings.

My small bathroom (3.6m2) needs a complete rehaul. It is rectangular in shape - 2m long and 1.8 wide - doubles as the laundry (washing machine only, no dryer) and has one small, wooden, side-hung casement window. Lack of ventilation and little/or no proper undercoating or waterproofing, has caused mildew on the celling and scotia and cracking and peeling of the paint.

The seratone around the bath/shower is badly damaged and water is slowly leaking into the wall cavity behind it. The whole house is concrete - walls, floors - definitely not concrete blocks, but solid slabs (I think). I want to remove all the waterproof wall panels in the bathroom, back to the concrete and need to know what I need to do to the existing concrete, to ensure it is waterproof.

To maximise the small space I plan on removing the bath and installing a shower instead, replacing the existing toilet with a smaller one and putting in a new vanity.

To save on costs I want to do as much of the demolition as I can myself, but there are a couple if things I need to know, if anyone can help me:

1. Turning the water off for my unit also turns it off for the other 3 units in my block as there are no separate water meters. How can I stop the water from pouring out once I have removed a tap? I will need to turn the water back on before installing new taps.

2. If anyone out there has done a reno on a bathroom taking the walls back to the structural concrete, I would be interested in any hints, help or advice.

Have spent a bit of time on YouTube already but most of the DIY bathroom videos have tiles, not wet wall and I haven't been able to find anything specifically about concrete walls.

I wanted to create a bigger space so I knocked out the wall to the toilet and made a bigger bathroom.

I have put electric underfloor heating down so the tiles are nice and warm. I managed to fit the shower in too, before there was a small cupboard there.

hi, i’m kinda new here and need some DIY advice 😁 i live in a unit with a veranda that has no water tap. overtime it has been so dusty and a little grimey outside. i cleaned and vacuum it but it’s just not enough, i was wondering if i can connect a garden hose to my laundry tap where the washing machine is attached to (hot/cold)? i just want to clean my veranda with a pressure washer. i went to the store and told me i need an aerator for the tap before i can connect something on the tap. just need an advice 😁 is it possible to connect a garden hose to the laundrytap? if yes, what stuffs do i need?

Hi all!

I have a house that was built in the 90s which means there’s lots of ugly tiles in the bathroom, laundry and kitchen.

Because they’re most likely attached to platerboard, it would be too costly for me to rip and replace them so I’d love to tile over them!

I know you can tile over tile and that seems pretty straightforward (I’ve read some great posts on here already) but for wet areas like bathroom and laundry, do you need some sort of waterproofing? Or no, because the existing tile would already have that? Thanks!

Great taps however I now have very little water pressure coming from the head unit.

Really like the taps and don't want to have to replace them again, has any one else had this problem?

Went back to the store to ask for some advise there however just got a shoulder shrug and a don't know.

Vanity basin waste extension??

I'm doing a cosmetic makeover of my ensuite and going to replace the vanity top that has a built in sink to a merbau laminated panel with a basin that sits on top. My problem is that the waste pipe will be too short by about 200mm. Probably a dumb question, but can I buy an extender or something similar, or do I need to replace the entire waste pipe with a longer one?

Can I change a cistern to update a toilet?

Hi! I have purchased a house that was built in the 90s and the toilets are really worn. The actual toilet that connect into the floor just needs a good clean and can be saved, but the cistern and toilet seat have to go.

Bathroom Reno - small ensuite - looking for suggestions

Good Afternoon,

Looking for inspiration for ensuite that is water damage. We have just bought a late 90's home and the ensuite is water damaged. Our plumbing and structural reports have not returned any structural problems, so assuming the bathroom was not appropriately waterproofed. My other half would like to repair as cheap as possible, whereas, I would love to have this as my happy place (love my showers!) In particular, the toilet is the feature view from the main bedroom, and yes, I concede that I can keep the door closed to block the view.

Some photos and an attempt at a floor plan attached for reference. The linen cupboad is currently a small standalone cupboard, but don't thi k there is as much space in that corner as the plan indicates. The window is full length floor to ceiling.

I haven't had a chance to measure up properly yet, but any suggestions would be most appreciated before I speak to a tradie.Water damage at top of tileswater damage at window edge

Bathroom renovation project - Knock 'em down to build them up again

With the gate done we now move indoors. The bathroom layout is kind of weird at the moment. We have a bath and a vanity in one room. In the other, we have the toilet. Then in the washhouse, we have the shower.

The original plan was to knock out the wall between the toilet and the bathroom, rotate the toilet 90º, then move the shower into the enlarged bathroom. On reflection, it looks like the shower will take too much space. We've decided on another plan.

We'll move the vanity opposite the toilet. We'll replace the toilet with a smaller footprint one which should move it closer to the wall. We'll then replace the bath with a larger one and put a rain head shower over the bath. We'll move the taps for the bath from the end to the side.

I prefer this new plan, and to be honest this is what I suggested from the outset. The benefits are numerous.
First, we will get more space. By not having a dedicated shower we will save 900mm square. That's a lot of space when you think about it. By moving the vanity to opposite the toilet, we make access to the window easier. Not that we need it because we will be adding a fan/light unit.

By having the taps at the side of the bath we make it more comfortable for those kinky nights in the tub with the missus. No more taps in the back or neck. It also makes it easier to get to the taps when filling the bath for Little Wookie.

By having a rain head then it just makes for a better shower experience. All that water flowing over you instead of whatever decides to reach you is in my mind nicer. Getting wet all at once rather than piece by piece, with revolving to get a full cover just makes sense.
And last, but by no means least, it just makes the room more practical. It also frees up more space in the washhouse for better washing machine and dryer access. We'll also be able to move the switchboard into that room and get it out of the hallway.

The thing with all these plans is they are pretty easy to make but at the same time just make everything so better. I'm looking forward to this project. But, I'm under no illusion that this is going to be a cheap change. The plumber on his own is going to be most of the cost. Funnily enough, that's the reason I wanted to become a plumber.

We've pretty much reached where we can do it all by ourselves so the rest of the finishing can't be done until the plumber comes in. So it's going to look like this for a wee while:

How to install a single panel frameless shower screen on unlevel floor

I would like to install a single panel frameless shower screen for my newly finished curbless shower floor. The shower floor has a fall to the shower drain. The screen is meant to install just outside of that fall but I have a problem. The rest of the bathroom floor which i haven't touched has a fall towards the bathroom drain located about 80-90cm from the wall where screens will be installed on. So, that has created a situation just like the image where due to the fall on bathroom floor, there will be a gap under shower screen since screen is 90 deg cut.

I don't want to go and pay a $1000 for a custom made screen to match the bathroom slope.

At the free end of the screen, the gap to the floor would be around 1-1.5 cm

How can I rectify this so I can install the screen properly? The screen uses 2 wall mount brackets and 1 floor mount brackets.

Any ideas, advice and suggestions are appreciated.

Hi I am installing a diy pebble shower floor and have been given so much advice and watched many diy videos that I am a wee bit confused, of course I want my showerfloor to not crack or discolour & look good.

Floor has been reinforced underneath and shower area has been waterproofed twice with Dunlop Waterproofing membrane.

Do I need to install a ceramic tile underlay, then deck mud (mixture of cement & sand) to create the fall then waterproof again then lay my concrete/mortar and place my pebbles wash off excess and once dry seal with epoxy resin/polyurethane ? I want non slip and to feel the exposed pebbles with my feet. Please help

First time laundry reno advice

I am about to embark on my first ever Reno and DIY so a little bit daunted by the process.
I am planning on updating my laundry which is a reasonable sized space but has very little storage.

I have already bought flat pack cabinetry (perhaps a little prematurely 😬). This includes 2x 850mm wall hung cabinets, 1x 600mm standing cabinet to be used as the basin cabinet and 1x 450mm standing cabinet. This will allow space for the washing machine and dryer to sit under a bench top.

I am now a bit confused as to how to remove the old laundry trough cabinet and plumbing and then hide the washing machine drain hose in the new cabinetry.
I have watched a couple of Bunnings videos which have been helpful in explaining how to cut holes in the cabinet for the piping and installing the sink into the bench but haven’t found a lot of info on hiding the washing machine piping.
I’ve uploaded my current laundry and my ideas for new laundry for your info (basically just flip this one).

I'm planing on renovate my 2m x 2m bathroom. Tried to contact a few trades and find hard to get on hold of some good ones. One with good feedback quote me $7k which include remove tile, demolish, water proof, change shower tap to mixer and lay new tile (4 sqm floor, 6 sqm wall) and roughly 5 days work. I did some math:

7000 - 1000(material) /5 = $1200 /per day

I'm not sure if that's the medium range price, but 1.2k after tax cash feels a lot to me.

Now I'm thinking about DIY it, apart from save the money, I probably will have more attention to details when renovate my own bathroom and also will have more flexibility.

My only concern is about waterproofing. I'll got it done by a professional for sure, but

Constructing a curbless shower questions

I have a old shower hob where the curbs are made of bricks.

the shower is too small, so i've decided to remove the curbs and make a curbless shower.

the shower floor already sloped, so I'm not gonna dig into concrete floor and build a sloped pan.

I'm just gonna remove the curbs and the floor tile, prime it, put waterproofing membrane and install new tiles.

i've figured all the parts out except that i have no idea how to remove the curb.

i've remove the tiling on the curb, but the curb looks to be made of bricks attached to concrete floor and glued together with mortar.

I've been working with chisel and hammer but removing the mortar was best i could do.

could you please suggest a method or a tool (non expensive preferred) I could use to remove the bricks and reach the concrete floor?

Hi everyone,

We would like to remove the small shower/tub that is in our main ( and only) bathroom. We have done a renovation of our kitchen and laundry using Bunnings products - Thanks Bunnings WAGGA! And now want to tackle the bathroom.

Can anyone weigh in on the "easiest" and "cheapest" way to go about this?

1) Budget- is it possible to remove the bath base and the tiles in the shower area, and then buy a base and the acrylic wall product from Bunnings, keep the rest of the tiles but paint white with White Knight ( or similar). Replace the 70's vanity with a lovely new vanity?

2) More expensive?? Relocate the shower against the wall with the window ( how to we waterproof the window or do we replace with a different material?) and relocate the vanity to where to shower/bath is. I have spoken to the previous owners and a bath used to run along the wall from the shower to the vanity so there is a waste outlet under there somewhere.

Any ideas/ opinions would be greatly appreciated as we don't have a big budget for the project, but with elderly parents living with me I want to reduce the risk of falls.

Hi,

I'm renting a flat above a shop (first floor) and am having an issue with a blocked drain. If I can fix the problem without having to get a plumber in then I would prefer that.

So we had lots of issues at least ten years ago with the same shower drain. But we had a plumber come and fix the problem and we haven't had any issues since. At the time the plumber said that the pipes coming from the kitchen sink were installed badly and cheaply and would likely be a problem in the future.

The shower drain that now has standing water in it has never been used as a shower in the 15 years that I've been living here. And it hasn't even had any water in it for at least five years. We have another bathroom that is on a separate system that we use instead. I mention this so you know that is not likely to be a hair blockage in the shower drain but actually a blockage somewhere else that is causing water to back up and flow out from the lowest drain point which is our unused shower drain in the laundry.

My housemate thought that the sink in the laundry was draining slowly and/or flowing back in to the second sink. So he poured a small amount of Drain-o as per the instructions into both sinks. While the sinks seem to be draining better we now have this issue with the shower drain backing up and having about 2 inches of foul smelling drain water in the bottom of the unused shower. My housemate used the Drain-o on Saturday evening and the shower drain began spewing water on Sunday afternoon. I've never heard of Drain-o causing a blockage. Is it possible? And how do I fix it? We have tried using a plunger but that just brought up gross stuff from the drain and didn't fix the problem. We have also used a wire hanger in the drain pipe but didn't have much luck there either. Please help.

If you have any suggestions I would be forever grateful.

Small main bathroom complete budget renovation

Have just uncovered that the 80's reno that we bought has no waterproofing and shower recess is leaking:-(... so its a full reno job with waterproofing required.

Currently has a very large enclosed shower and corner vanity which is going.

Laundry renovation help!

Hi there! So I've had the whole of my house professionally renovated except the laundry, which sits at the back of the garage, but has a door to both the kitchen and outdoors at one end (at the end not pictured).

Except where I need a plumber or electrician, I'm planning on doing all of this myself, and I'd like to keep costs down by keeping the plumbing and electrical outlets where they are as much as possible.

My plan is to stack the washing machine and dryer at the end of the room on the left hand side (from the picture) - but I'd like to raise the washing machine on a plinth, and put a shelf in to sit the dryer on, rather than having them sitting on top of each other.

I'd then like to run a bench from the right hand corner down to the external door (bottom right of the photo) with underbench cupboards and a news drop in sink, but in the same place it is now.

The floor is concrete - most of the house is on piers, but the garage through to the laundry is on concrete. I think this means I'll have difficulty putting new drainage in for the WM. (It's currently closest to the sink so the drain can run into the sink).

The major issues I think I have here are:

- Can I extend the drain hose an extra metre or so to drain from the new WM position to the existing sink?

- How do I build a (15-20cm tall) plinth for the washing machine?

- Can I use an MDF shelf inside a tall cupboard to sit the dryer on? (It's your classic vents-through-the-front Simpson dryer)

I'd be grateful for anyone's advice on the issues I've raised, any other issues, or new design ideas. Also, sorry for the terrible photo - this was while I was still moving in!

I am new in Bunnings workshop community.

Me and my wife trying to renovate our bathroom in budget in our ways because this reno story started with small crack then go worse in our shower base and bathtub.

Also from long time we were planing to do renovations bit by bit. but one and another responsibilities comes. Now this pandemic teach us like you have only one life, for sure take the responsibilities and fulfil it but also fulfil your dreams as well.

Finally we did started. Some items we already bought but some still pending on progress can say....

Problems are : start with

1. Shower Area :- I am going to add some pics so you guys get idea about shower base area. I did remove some plaster, tiles which you guys can see also base and under that is a whole. My old shower is 900mmx900mm. I want to upgrade in size and style so I bought 900 x 1200mm frameless sliding door shower screen.

Q 1 : howmuch cost is for fill up that whole ? if I decide to go for tiling and if i go for shower base then howmuch cost?

2. Vanity Area :- For vanity we have idea in our mind but we don't have a knowledge how we reach there. we are trying and now we got some references what we want but we stuck how we do that in our budget please help us.

90% we are decided our vanity (cabinet only) but we want top in timber with only 20% to 30% resin.

Frosted resin epoxy if I am not wrong. this is the name. you can see in the pic.

Vanity size we need max L700mm x W450mm max and H not sure because we planing for wall hung vanity - cabinet only from Bunnings, waiting for colour options. our basin size is L400mm x W360mm x H150mm. which we already bought. thats is a river stone basin.

So my plan to do change everything slowly slowly because of budget.

At present we are doing our homework & getting other stuffs then I am going to discuss further about other things like bathroom tiles, floor Tiling, taps & fixers, Bathtub, lights, exhaust ( most because I did change many times ) and etc.

Please Guys help us in this project...

I am extending bathroom and replacing slab of concrete previously there with timber sub floor and in turn plywood and tiling .What size bearer and floor joists are necessary ?. The space to be covered is

1650 x 960. At the shortest point ,.i.e. 960 mm end, there is an exposed joist measuring 100mm x 50mm where there is floor boards resting on it. Will be attaching another timber to the existing joist to support plywood flooring. The joists will be running the longer length.i.e. 1650mm. How many joists do i need for a 960mm distance to the wall ?

What size joists are necessary ?

What type of timber is needed ?

What spacing is required between joists ?

Is it okay to attach the bearer to the solid brick wall with Dynabolts ?

What size bearer is required for the job ?

Which type of timber is required for the bearer ?

Replacing the vanity countertop and sink

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get some advice on how to tackle some improvements we'd like to make to the bathroom basin and benchtop.

We've just recently purchased this house, and the previous owners decided to tile and grout around the original stone benchtop. Initial thoughts that it would be difficult to remove with damaging the tiles, so we thought we'd overlay a laminate countertop and place a countertop sink.

We want to have a counter depth of 600mm to hide the counter below, but we can't seem to find anything laminate that goes that deep.

Any suggestions on what we can do? We're looking for changes we can do in the short-term, before doing a more ambitious reno down the track.

Cannot connect tap to washing machine

Hi all, We have a problem with connecting our washing machine to the cold water outlet. The drain pipe is blocking, and there is no way to hammer the cold water outlet to position. would there be any converter we could purchase to mitigate this problem please? tried buying something from Bunnings but it didn’t fit, plus Bunnings is currently closed to public except for tradies, so we are unable to go in and trial and error.
The washing machine hose is supposed to be connected to the cold water outlet which is on the right. We initially connected it to the hot water (left) unknowingly and realised it wasn’t good for our clothes. Ps; we have just moved into our new place, hence the unfamiliarity. thank you in advance for your advice!

New bathroom/laundry shelving

I'd like to install some shelving in my 'laundry', similar to the example pictured below.

My 'laundry' is an insert within my bathroom, with a relatively thin wall on the left, tiles behind it, and from what I can tell - a thin wall + plaster on the right. I'd love some advice on if it's possible to use a design similar to the one below without creating any visible holes on the left-hand wall specifically.

- Is there a certain length screw / specialty attachment I can use to achieve this?

- Is there anything I should consider for the rear wall? (I'm not fussed about drilling into the tiles behind if required)

Changing from a P-trap toilet to a S-trap toilet

Purchasing a townhouse and this ugly pipe in the wall is enough to turn me off the whole place. I will be purchasing another toilet and i was hoping to find out if anyone knows whether i am able to do any of the following:-

1. Have it completely change from a P-trap to a S-trap toilet, such as cover up the whole in the wall and have it coming through the floor, which i will be ripping up the tiles and re-doing.

2. If i cannot change it, could i have a pipe running from the wall around to the back of the toilet, that way i could stick a plant or something there hahahaha to cover up the pipe running straight across..... yes yes i am OCD. The conversion kits are these for allowing what i have just explained about having the pipe run around the wall to the back of the toilet.

3. If someone has any other suggestions, i will be totally greatful for.

Storage and pet needs in laundry and toilet

Hello, wondering if we can have some ideas/input. We are making some changes to our 'wet rooms' which are all next to each other in our 1970's house. We are moving some walls (in green) to make a larger family bathroom and ensuite (changing small W.I.R to B.I.R the length of the of the bathroom).

With the laundry, with toilet currently separated with a thin wall which could be removed making one big room with toilet in it.

As the builders are moving the walls and doing the bathrooms we thought we could use them if we need to move any walls in the laundry, but we'd fit it out ourselves from Bunnings.

Our needs/wants

floor to ceiling storage with space for ironing board, mop, vacuum etc
toilet
laundry tub and cabinet (we are thinking floating)
cat litter box space
washing machine
storage for cat and dog food so accessible a few times a day.
We'd like it to look spacious but with a combined space of 2.6 wide (including outside door on one wall with a door currently opposite this into hallway) and 2.1 deep it's going to be tricky.

We will be changing the outside door and window to opaque if we knock down the wall next to toilter.

How to update tiny laundry?

our laundry is tiny and needs updating. I would love to replace trough with base cabinet and insert sink . And then have Benchtop running from broom cupboard to end of the wall. The broom cupboard we have is staying. The length from the end of broom cupboard to the wall is 1400. Can’t go deeper than 500 for base cabinet needs to stay flush with door arch . So basically I have 1400 long by about 500 deep to play with. Washing machine is is 600 wide. And 500 deep.

What door do i need?

$600 Bunnings laundry reno

You may have seen our $500 laundry reno on here, well we’ve done another one, this time on our rental property. Total cost just over $600!

The space was smaller than our last reno but we added a little more storage this time around by putting in a wall cabinet.

We ripped out the old trough & cabinet, put in 2 practa base cabinets, 1000mm & 500mm) and then used the acacia benchtop. We cut down the benchtop and used the leftover to make a shelf on the side to fill the space and also make it more usuable.

We used the Estilo trough/sink again, and we used a jigsaw to cut a hole in the benchtop and top of the base cabinet to install it.

As we left the taps where they were, the only plumping that needed to be done was unhooking the pipe from the old trough and reattaching it to the new one.

We also had to cut a hole in the bottom of the 1000mm base cabinet and the shelf for the pipes to run through.

For the tiling we kept it simple and cheap with the gloss white tiles, as we wanted the benchtop to stay the main feature.

We did the tiling ourselves, the only time we’ve done tiling before was in our last laundry reno, which we self taught ourselves by watching YouTube tiling tutorials.

We left the taps for the washing machine alone as being a rental it allows for a top or front loader and also left the space above it to allow for a dryer to be either wall mounted or stacked onto the washing machine.

Overall for around $600 we are very happy with the outcome, and I’m sure our tenants will appreciate the extra storage.

Here’s a complete breakdown of the total cost (everything from Bunnings):

1x Practa 1000mm vase cabinet - $111

1x Practa 500mm 3 draw base cabinet - $117

1x Practa 1000mm wall cabinet - $81

1x Acacia hardwood benchtop - $99

1x Estilo 615x550mm trough - $130

2x 6pk White gloss tiles - $30

Other bits & pieces like the tile adhesive, grout, screws, no gaps etc cost us around $50 - a lot of it we already had.

How to paint laminate shower stall?

First bathroom renovation

Hi, we’re about to start the planning for our first bathroom renovation. We’ve got two young children so hoping to split the bathroom into two separate spaces. Natural lighting is very limited so we think we will add a wall between the current toilet and the shower, leaving the sliding door to room with the bath for the family bathroom. The other bathroom will Become a proper en-suite and have a toilet added. In all the examples I’ve seen the toilet seems to always to be next to the shower, is there a reason? Could the layout be toilet, Vanity, shower? Would love any tips or advice!

Hey everyone!
I am about to undertake my first (budget) home reno and beginning with the toughest room, the bathroom! (did somebody say "mates rates"?)

I love the layout i currently have but it seems unachievable to me as there would be no where to put the toilet roll holder!
the dimensions of the room are 2.5m wide by 2.3 deep.
We are hoping to have a new walk in Shower, new bath, new toilet and have made a DIY vanity that is 110cm long and 50cm deep.
In the floorplan above the bath is 150cmx75cm (one from bunings). The shower is 110cm deep and 90cm wide (the width can decrease if someone finds it works better with a narrower shower).

Also attached are pictures of the bathroom now for background.
we will be pushing out the left side wall into the master bedroom as there is enough room in order to hopefully fit a bath and toilet into the main bathroom!

If nothing can be achieved we will leave the layout AS IS (sadface) and only have a walk-in shower, our vanity and a toilet.

Can't wait to hear peoples ideas.

Painted old bathroom and tile

Hello,

My husband and I bought our house over a year ago and the one downfall was the bathroom - the rest of the house is beautifully painted, polished timber floors and large yard. This weekend I decided to tackle this and give it new life and tie together the house.

The bathroom has tiles which are in fantastic condition, just ugly colours that bring down the space and home, the floor tiles need a very good scrub after painting but we are looking to keep them for now.
