Hi all I want to build a front fence using bricks and slats. Plan to do all labor myself. Have seen slats at Bunnings that can be screwed in after brick is constructed. Width is 15.24m height 1.5m and hope to find a remote style double gate 🙂

There are plenty of online tools to design your own deck. I've used your provided sizes to create a basic layout. This uses a traditional system of a 90 x 45mm joist over a 140 x 45mm bearer. I'm building a deck 8m x 3.5m and I'm unsure what size timber to use for the bearers and joists and also where to position my posts.

I have seen some previous posts on this topic where free sketch ups are done?

In a year like no other, the Bunnings Workshop community has continued to provide great inspiration and advice to each other for all their projects around the house and garden.

Thank you to all of our clever and creative members for sharing their projects and experiences this year, and a special thanks for ensuring that Workshop has remained a wonderfully positive, encouraging and friendly community.

We trust you will be greatly inspired by what members have achieved in their homes this year, particularly because most are low-cost and very achievable for even those with limited D.I.Y. experience.

Top Workshop projects of 2020

The most popular Workshop projects shared (by pageviews) in 2020 were:

1. $500 Bunnings laundry reno by

$500 laundry renovation

Transforming a basic laundry which had a standard trough and no storage, Jess installed a new sink, cupboards, tiles and benchtop in just a day for a wallet-friendly price. Later in the year, Jess also completed a similar $600 laundry transformation at her rental property.

2. Budget-friendly raised garden bed by

Interest in growing your own food has grown rapidly this year, with many Bunnings Workshop members installing new raised garden beds in their backyards. This fast, easy and budget-friendly bed can be built by anyone, with horticulturalist and D.I.Y. expert Adam providing a full list of materials and a comprehensive how-to video.

3. How to build a wicking bed by

Using an L-shaped raised garden bed, Bunnings Workshop member Maursie added pond lining, 90mm pipe, drainage gravel and shade cloth to construct this fantastic wicking bed for water-efficient vegetable growing.

4. Side yard landscaping project by

Side yard landscaping

Part of an impressive backyard makeover that included a new merbau side gate and planter box with seating, this wonderful project transformed a tricky narrow area along the side of the house using new paving, edging, smart planting and lighting.

5. Landscape rebuild by

This backyard transformation included a fence makeover, deck extension, retaining walls, new lawn, a row of Sasanqua Camellia and built-in bench seat. Most materials were from Bunnings and no tradies were used except for a concreter.

6. Raised garden beds for vegie garden by

Similar to the raised beds shared by fellow Workshop member a couple of years ago, these eye-catching designs effectively utilise timber and corrugated iron and make an attractive and functional feature for the front garden.

7. Garage storage makeover by

Garage storage

Garage storage goals! Many Bunnings Workshop members have gazed enviously at this impressive garage makeover which uses Pinnacle storage products, including peg boards, to mount and display various tools.

8. Small laundry reno by

With a small, awkward space, creative solutions were needed for this laundry renovation such as hanging rail and a large benchtop for folding clothes. The attractive new design passed the ultimate test – a baby in cloth nappies.

9. Backyard patio makeover by

This impressive backyard patio makeover was Chiren’s first outdoor D.I.Y. project and includes two treated pine decks, a daybed, planter box, fence painting and feature wall to create an incredibly inviting outdoor entertaining space.

10. Ute bookshelf by

Ute bookshelf

This delightful ute bookshelf was built using stained pine boards and features wonderful finishing touches such as a working light and passenger door. Jess also built a wonderful castle bookshelf for her daughter’s bedroom that has also been very popular with the Workshop community.

You can get loads of ideas and inspiration for your kitchen from our clever and creative Bunnings Workshop community members.

Here are the Top 10 most popular kitchen projects on Workshop by pageviews:

1. Bathroom, laundry and kitchen refresh by

Rohan’s main goal for his kitchen renovation was more bench space and room for appliances. But it was removing a wall and opening up the kitchen to the living area that had the most dramatic impact in transforming the space.

The cottage makeover included a new kitchen

2. 80s kitchen reno on a budget by

This budget kitchen makeover was completed for less than $1000 and included new bench tops, sink and tapware. Cupboards were painted and a new tiled splashback added.

3. Before and after cottage makeover by

Renovation expert Belinda Smith transformed a tired weatherboard into an absolutely gorgeous cottage that sold after the very first inspection. Belinda typically sets a renovation budget of 10% of the purchase price, spending the money where it reaps the most return, which always includes the kitchen. The kitchen transformation included new cabinetry, appliances, splashback and stone benchtops.

The 70s-era kitchen that my wife and I inherited when we purchased our house would be typical of many Australian homes. It deserved the sledgehammer. Over 10 years later we still love the functional and clean design of our replacement kitchen, which also incorporates a European-style laundry.

Like many projects, this renovation came with surprises such as a water leak and mould behind the existing kitchen cabinetry. We love the use of overhead cupboards to add plenty of storage in the new-look space.

This simple yet brilliant project made from pine, dowel and runners has inspired other community members to create their own versions. We are also looking forward to an upcoming new revision where the shelves can be moved up and down for added flexibility.

Drawers are much more practical and accessible than cupboards. You can typically fit a lot more in a drawer and items are easier to reach.

9. 1960s kitchen renovation by

With dated décor, limited bench space and little storage, this 1960s-era kitchen needed a major overhaul. A Bunnings kitchen consultant was used to help transform the space to include a wonderful large island bench, farmhouse sink, subway tiles and a cute café-style counter for enjoying a morning coffee.

10. Kitchen makeover by

Most materials for this homely kitchen makeover came from Bunnings and the project was a three-month labour of love. It includes striking heritage-style cabinet doors, island bench, new appliances and sink.

A bathroom renovation (or even a simple cosmetic makeover) can seem intimidating and expensive, so it is wise to spend plenty of time planning and getting the foundations right.

But as our clever and creative Workshop community members often illustrate, there is a lot you can do to improve your home without spending huge amounts of money.

1. Bathroom, laundry and kitchen refresh by

Structural changes were kept to a minimum to reduce cost

Rohan kept structural changes to a minimum when tackling a renovation of his single fronted Victorian home. He received lots of inspiration and advice along the way from and about how to make the most of limited space before unveiling the fantastic end result.

2. 1950s bathroom renovation by

Darren’s diary of his bathroom renovation is an entertaining and informative account of his renovation journey, taking us through the comprehensive transformation of a traditional 1950s-era bathroom into a modern oasis that is wonderful for relaxing and a beautiful and functional space.

3. Tiny bathroom makeover by

Darren’s objective for this cheap and cheerful makeover was to update a very small bathroom for less than $1000. It’s a great example of what paint (plus some hard work) can achieve.

Workshop member Dave is happy to “give most things a go” and his budget-focused bathroom makeover has hit the mark with many in the community. No more pink walls and pink vanity…

6. Bunnings bathroom makeover for less than $2500 by

Costing less than $2500, this bathroom project included new shower base and screen, freestanding vanity, wall and flooring tiles, taps, shelving and towel rails.

7. California Bungalow renovation by

A serious mould problem needed to be tackled first

Part of a large reno of a three-bedroom house, the bathroom required significant work as it had a serious mould problem. But all the hard yakka was worth it.

8. Another bathroom reno done and dusted by

Completed in just three days, this guest bathroom renovation included new wall tiles, vanity, tapware and glass panel for the shower, while the ensuite was also greatly enhanced with a new vanity and splashback.

Ohh, our back fence (onto public land) is one of my long standing to-do's.

The problem has always been that, according to Council rulings, it has to be "50% see through". Whatever that means, there are no examples or definition.

Its current dilapidated state is horizontal spaced slats, so we'll probably keep the round wooden posts, providing they are solid enough, and move those to vertical decking boards at some point in time.

But now its on the "to-do after reno" list. So a problem for another time.

1. Screening to hide hot water systems by

Need to screen an ugly hot water system or something else around your house? Take some inspiration from leading Workshop member Pete and use some screening panels and a plant like a climbing ficus.

2. Planter boxes by

These two 2.5m planter boxes by experienced woodworker Rylie were fitted over an existing garden bed and lined with builders plastic reading for planting.

3. D.I.Y. artificial plant wall by

Workshop member Nikkaz had just created a wonderful outdoor entertaining area, but needed to do something with a boring brick wall. He created a striking feature using a mesh panel, some cable ties and Un-real artificial hedging.

It’s simple to transform your backyard with a spray gun, as many Workshop members have shown. Nikkaz used the very popular Dulux colour Monument, which helps to make nearby greenery really pop.

It can be surprisingly easy to create an attractive and functional piece of furniture for your home.

You might even be able to recycle some leftover timber or free pallet wood into something both beautiful and practical, as many other Bunnings Workshop community members have done.

1. Concrete table by

Concrete table

Perseverance paid off for long-time Bunnings Workshop member Andadams, who can now enjoy this striking concrete-topped table for many years to come. It's a wonderful example of upcycling.

2. Pallet book and wine shelf by

A project that member KGriff1 says is “so simple, anyone can do it”. A pallet was quickly and easily transformed into a fantastic shelf to store wine, books and some potted succulents. All that was needed was some extra MDF and some sanding.

3. Bench seat with handtools by

This beautifully constructed bench seat was made from pine using traditional woodworking techniques such as tenon joins with no glue, nails or screws. Experienced woodworker Andrew finished the piece with three coats of Danish oil.

This very clever storage solution for cordless drills has been a consistently popular project on Workshop. Keen woodworker Wayne has also made another version.

Recycling pallets is great for the environment and provides an inexpensive source of materials for many keen woodworkers. Better still, it is not difficult to repurpose pallet wood into fantastic items like garden planter boxes and outdoor furniture.

1. D.I.Y. table made from pallets by

A D.I.Y. table made using pallets

Rob loves “indulging his inner tradie at weekends” but reckons he started this popular table without much of a plan. He used four pallets, two of which he took completely apart, then inserted the strips of wood into the gaps on the other pallets to make a solid tabletop. You can make your own by following Rob's step-by-step instructions in this guide: How to build a pallet timber table.

2. Planter box from pallets by

Workshop member Lester kicked off this popular planter box project by confessing he had with “no idea how to start”. But after a little help from the community and a robust design sketch, he soon had a wonderful planter box lined with recycled laserlite sheets that has inspired many other members. The project also sparked some great discussion.

3. Monster outdoor table with burn effect by

Passionate pallet advocate Rylie's favourite project to date, this huge outdoor table measures 1.6 by 2.1 metres and was almost entirely made from pallet wood. After sanding, Rylie decided to use a small gas blowtorch to produce a striking burn effect instead of staining.

This ingenious creation not only looks great, but is extremely practical. It contains handy storage underneath the bench seat as well as two planter boxes for your favourite plants.

Workshop member KGriff1 had a problem that doesn’t happen in our house – a wine surplus. Looking for a quick and cheap way to store them, she recycled a pallet into a fantastic shelf to store wine, books and some potted succulents. All that was needed was some extra MDF and some sanding work.

Pallet project aficionado Marty described this project as “a fun build and reasonably simple”. His tip for creating a pallet bar is just to ensure the overhanging ledge is well supported as mates will love leaning on it when nursing a well-earned drink. This enormous outdoor table measures 2.1 by 1.6 metres and was almost entirely made from recycled timber. Pallet wood aficionado Rylie used a small gas blowtorch to apply a burn effect before applying timber oil to bring out the grain in the wood.

Hi Jason, Thanks for the Bunnings suggestion. Yes we use the local Bunnings quite a lot for just about everything. In fact will be buying a Camo hidden fastener kit for the new decking. Sadly in regards to best weather treatment for real WA Jarrah the local guys cant help. with this issue so I am hoping to garner some comment maybe from WA bulders who are familiar with WA Jarrah. Cheers.

A deck can help extend your living area and embrace the outdoors. It provides a fantastic space to relax and entertain friends and family.

Whether you are considering building a new deck or rejuvenating an existing deck, we trust you will be inspired and informed by these decking projects from the clever and creative Bunnings Workshop community.

Here’s our top 10 most popular decking projects on Workshop by pageviews:Daniel had “never built anything” in his life...

1. Backyard transformation by

Once the new deck was installed as part of this comprehensive backyard makeover, creator Rylie says "things started to fall into place". Around 40 square metres in size, the deck look four days to build and has inspired many other Workshop members with their own low-level decking projects.

2. New outdoor entertaining area by

Workshop member Daniel had “never built anything” in his life. But after a fire damaged an old patio, Daniel constructed this stunning deck that has been hugely admired by the community.

3. First deck from scratch by

Workshop member Tara was justifiably proud of completing her first deck from scratch. Measuring 12 by 4.2 metres, the Merbau deck cost around $6000 to build and was later extended with steps leading down to a new garden bed.

4. Low profile deck by

A deck like Tara's can dramatically increase your living area.

After months of careful planning and lots of amazing assistance from ever-helpful Workshop members, used a modular decking frame from Bunnings for this wonderful low-level Merbau deck over the top of existing brick paving. "Without this forum it was impossible," says the proud owner.

5. Deck renewal project by

The harsh Australian sun combined with heavy foot traffic and outdoor furniture can leave decks looking shabby. This project involved sanding the deck back to raw timber before oiling to bring the timber back to looking good as new.

6. Low-level deck by

If you have limited clearance between the ground and your deck, this project is a good example of how to deal with such limitations. It’s also a terrific example of how helpful the Workshop community can be when you have questions and challenges.

7. Merbau decking over concrete slab by

Another first decking project where the member got fantastic advice from the Workshop community to help them build a brilliant deck featuring 90 x 19mm Merbau boards from Bunnings. The discussion has also helped inspire and inform many other members tackling their own projects, with kindly sharing his experiences to assist others.

8. Strip, sand and oil project by

Cleaning with a pressure washer is often all that is needed before re-oiling a deck. But this deck was in poor shape, requiring stripping of the original coating before sanding and oiling. The result was well worth the effort.

A pool presents a very tough environment for a traditional timber deck, so experienced Workshop member Adam used a pre-fabricated steel frame with HardieDeck fibre cement boards. His video on the build process is both informative and entertaining. Adam's subsequent outdoor entertaining project was even more impressive.

While many Aussies choose Merbau decking boards, spotted gum can look absolutely beautiful, as this deck from Darren demonstrates. This helpful discussion also includes advice about choosing the right oil to bring out the best in the timber.

1. Bathroom, laundry and kitchen refresh by @RohanH

Rohan kept structural changes to a minimum when tackling a renovation of his single fronted Victorian home. His aim was to ensure the house was more visually appealing and more functional. With a modest budget for the reno, Rohan got fantastic advice and inspiration from community members during the project.
