Many thanks for checking on that for me <LI-USER login="redracer01" uid="1050"></LI-USER>. At that price point, I wouldn't have expected the breech to be included with the basin set. That's a great solution and provides everything <LI-USER login="Krusty" uid="12867"></LI-USER> needs, including new taps and a spout.

Hello <LI-USER uid="14838"></LI-USER> , Hello <LI-USER uid="12867"></LI-USER>

I'm sorry Mitch but I'm afraid we don't have this particular type of breech. Looking at the assembly this could have been possibly have been hand built. The breech plus compression fittings soldered together to form this particular set up. You'll notice that the body of the breech has no basin levelling adjustment that would allow you to retro fit it into any type of basin. In these situations I would suggest to get a generic basin set such as the Estilo basin tap set. It provides you with everything you might possibly need to fix this without having to solder anything. This would be a moderate to difficult fix as it is in a very tight area of the vanity. But by preparing the parts and equipment needed it should be possible to fix this. The Estilo basin tap set has a modern breech body that is height adjustable. It comes with compression fittings already attached, bending the copper "T" would not be necessary with the new set as it is adjustable enough to accommodate a straight join.

If you do proceed with the fix I suggest putting in shut off valves to the hot and cold line to allow you to turn it off independently of the whole house. My other suggestion is to use flexi hoses to link the shut off valve to the new breech. There are many videos online showing how to update your old breech set with new modern ones. If you were to asses the amount of work you are about to do to replace just one of the breech's, it would be practical to just put new ones in on both sides.

Budget wise if you do decide to just replace the breach, it is still cheaper to buy the set. A general search for an individual breech has revealed a price point of 50 dollars. Where as the Estilo basin tap set has 2 breeches in it plus body cover and handle. It also has the copper "T" included for only 49 dollars. If you wish to disassemble the set to just use the breech's yes you can do it and it would still be more affordable than buying the breech by itself. I hope this has cleared up some of the possible solutions for you. I suggest planning a weekend where you can spend time planning how you will disassemble it and how you will re-install it. Good luck and stay safe.

Cheers,

Red

Out of the box!

Since the job isn't as large as I first thought, I would be less concerned with using your friend Max (<LI-USER uid="23191"></LI-USER>). However, you would still want assurance that the job will be done. Perhaps don't skip the quote and contract part just because he is a friend. Clearly outlining the job's expectations keeps you both accountable and is good practise, especially when dealing with friends.

It's always best to trust your intuition when it comes to builders. If you are not happy with your job, you are right to look elsewhere. You only get one go at these types of projects, and they need to be done right the first time.

Thanks Mitchell,

Sorry that was a typo - I only have 6 metres of floor in the bathroom to Tile with 395mm ceramic tiles then 4 metres? of wall in an old 80 year old state house.

Anyway realised my builder hadn't done measurements thoughtfully enough and that the layout, vanity and bath installation he suggested didn't fit my small bathroom.

With other mistakes he's made, or excuses that will hold up his work - I've let him go.

Now looking for Tilers and hoping to get a professional builder that did work for me before?

Do tiles always require 400mm nogs - joists even if you have a hard, (rimu) floor that is stable?

THanks from Max

Hi <LI-USER uid="19424" login="kalradeepak"></LI-USER>,

I would say it's the hot tap's valve that needs to be replaced if the dripping water is hot.

First, you'll start by turning off your mains water to the house. You then need to unscrew the button that I have marked with a red circle in the image below. Once that button has been removed, you'll be able to pull the handle off the tap spindle. When the tap handle is removed, it will expose the spindle which you can unscrew using a tap spanner. After you have removed the spindle from the wall, you can then replace the valve washer. When the valve washer has been replaced, you can then reassemble the tap, including any thread tape that might have been on the spindle.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance.

Hi <LI-USER uid="11437" login="ppp"></LI-USER>,

If you have fully removed the grub screw, then the handle is likely just stuck on from build-up. I'd try putting a little more pressure on it, as the only thing you would break is the faulty cartridge that will be replaced anyway. You could try placing a screwdriver under the handle to provide some leverage. Make sure to cover any chrome with a tea-towel as it will scratch extremely easily. If you have some WD-40 you could try squirting it behind the handle, but I'm not confident it will reach the stuck area.

My thoughts are that it needs a solid pull to remove. Let me know how you go.

Hi Mitchell, Big thank you for your clear instructions.

I switched main off and able to unscrew a small screw with hex key. But couldn't pull the handle off. Did not put much pressure as it may cause some issues.

However I was able to unscrew and pull handle off easily from a sink tap ( tried this just to understand process)

Do you have any suggestions how to pull that struck handle from shower tap ?

Many thanks

Hi <LI-USER uid="11437"></LI-USER>,

I suspect it will be the mixer cartridge that needs to be replaced. However, there can be a body washer in these units that might need replacing.

Once you've turned your water off at the mains, have a look for a tiny little grub screw located on the body of the mixer. You might need to lift the tap handle up similar to when you turn the water on to locate it, as it can be hidden by the handle. Un-screw it with an allen key. There might then be a nut that you need to undo. Once the cartridge is free it should pull out.

Take the cartridge into your local Bunnings store and a helpful team member will match it up for you.

Hopefully, that water is just dripping externally. If you remove the large chrome flange, you might see if there has been water penetration into the wall.

Please let me know if you have any questions or get stuck.

Hi <LI-USER login="Maxtiger" uid="23191"></LI-USER>,

That's a question that will be quite difficult for our members to give you an answer on. I would encourage you first to get a couple of quotes from tilers and ask them how long it will take. Ask your friend how long they believe it will take them, and then work out the difference in price between the two. The issue I see is that your friend could take four weeks at the hourly rate, whereas a tiler might take two weeks, cost more, but you'll end up with a quality installation. The defining factor for me is that you have six floors and four walls. I would only want a professional doing a job of that size, giving me a quote on cost and estimating how long it will take. They will also have an obligation to finish on time and deal with any likely issues.

Tiling is one thing, and almost everyone can do it if you take your time. However, waterproofing needs to be done right, and if it's not, it can cost a considerable amount to repair. Perhaps you might like to get your friend to do some finishing work or even grout the tiles, which could save some cost.

Suggestions please - I have a friend who has started a Handyman business recently.

He is helping me repair/renovate my bathroom and says he can waterproof and tile it for me.

He's done a bit of tiling in the past he says but does say he will have to buy tiling blades. (so obviously not that recently).

He will charge me $35/hour NZ.

Should I go with him or a professional tiler?

I feel he might go quite slowly so in the end more economical to go with the experienced person?

When you hire a tiler you pay per sqm correct?

I have approximately 6 floor and 4 wall...

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER login="Taffy2" uid="23251"></LI-USER>. It's fabulous that you've joined us and many thanks for your question.

Changing a tap washer is a relatively easy D.I.Y. task, and I trust we can successfully guide you through the process.

In order to remove the spindle, you'll need to start by cutting or digging out the soft silicone placed around it. Once this is removed, you can use a tap spanner to undo the spindle from the wall. If you are heading down to Bunnings for the tap spanner, pick up a couple of tap washers while you are there. Replace the leaking washer and screw the spindle back in place. Apply Selleys 100g Clear Ezi Press Wet Area Silicone around the spindle to seal out water from entering the wall. Finally, screw the tap flange back down and attach your tap handle.

Regarding your question on legalities, please see the Victorian plumbing regulations 2018.
Plumbing work that may be carried out by unlicensed or unregistered persons:

(1) For the purposes of section 221D(2)(b) of the Act, the change over of a water efficient shower head in a dwelling is plumbing work that may be carried out by a person who is not licensed or registered by the Authority.

Here are the full instructions on water-proofing using Crommelin products. I'll include the technical data sheet for Crommelin hi-performance primer for non-porous surfaces. Within it, you'll find an application section. You basically need to apply it with a brush or roller as per the recommended coverage rate and then wait one hour before over-coating with your water-proofing membrane.

Please let me know if you have further questions or run into difficulties.

Shower Valve- DIY or plumber fix?

My shower cold water tap is not turning off & I think it may need a new valve. I’ve tighten inside which it hasn’t helped this time around. I’m seeing conflicting information about whether I should attempt to fix it on my own (DIY beginner) & if it’s even legal for me to attempt in Victoria? Do I need a plumber or should I head into Bunnings & give it a crack?

Hi <LI-USER uid="12867" login="Krusty"></LI-USER>,

I'm all for D.I.Y., but if this were my sink, I'd be calling a plumber and getting a quote on repair. The limited space and the way the copper pipe has been bent makes this job quite difficult. This is also considered mains plumbing and should be left to a plumber as it is not a cosmetic D.I.Y. like changing taps.

You could most likely use a Brassheads WELS 3 Star Forward Bowl Sink Set With 165mm Spout, but it will need to be bent to suit. You might also like to check-out the costing of a budget-friendly vanity and sink mixer.

Hi <LI-USER uid="23191" login="Maxtiger"></LI-USER>,

Whether you use the tiles or go for the water-proof flooring, it's really a personal preference. What I will encourage you to do is work on the high moisture levels. Water-proofing is the foundation of any good bathroom renovation. If it's not done correctly, it can cause costly repairs in the future. Please have a read through <LI-USER uid="3777" login="Adam_W"></LI-USER>'s recent discussion on his water-proofing failure.

Do you have any idea where the moisture is coming from? Would it be limited ventilation or more importantly, perhaps a failed water-proofing membrane?

This unit will work with pressures as low as 75 kpa if you have unequal pressure in your house, you might have to have a flow restrictor in your cold line to equalize the pressure. Suffice to say this is the only one I can see you using barring a mechanical diverter. Remember to make sure that the shower head you purchase is for low pressure as well. Good luck and stay safe.

Cheers,

Red

How to buy a new toilet seat

G'day everyone!

We are going to possibly discuss the most sensitives of sensitives. Controversial? You bet! Life changing? Some say yes! Has it held marriages together? Well....I leave that up to you.

So it’s time to replace the toilet seat. How hard can it be? By my last count of the seat display at Bunnings toilet seat isle there were over twenty five types of seats with various sizes and fittings. Going in to the store and telling the service team that your seat is standard might prove to be a bit difficult to narrow down.

Believe it or not I often tell customers to bring their seat in. Take it off the toilet bring it to the garden and give it a once over with the garden hose. Wipe to dry and put it in a bag and your half way there. Simply match your old seat to the new seat sizes and compare mounting kits. Once the service team has this sorted out all you need is to install your new seat.

However should it prove to be difficult to bring your seat in I suggest the following.

1. Using a tape measure, measure the widest point of the seat from left to right. Let’s type that in to our phone as width.

2. Next we measure from front to back. Place the tip of the tape measure on top of the hinge of the seat. Where the toilet seat cover meats the actual seat. Do not measure from the mounting point hinge of the toilet seat. Let’s type that in as length.

3. What about the hinges? Most generic seats have adjustable hinges that go from 70mm all the way to 180mm. But all information you bring with will definitely help. So measure from the outside of the hinge left to right. We will type this in as hinge width.

4. Last but not the least, take at least 2 photos of your seat. One closed and one open, make sure that it encompasses the whole seat and that you are not too close that we only get half a picture.

Remember even if we get it all right sometimes it does not work and we may have to order you a special order seat. Remember that as long as you don’t break the hygienic seal of the seat you can still return it to the store for an exchange.

I hope this has cleared up some of the rumors and misconceptions of how to replace your toilet seat. No it does not involve an engineering degree or witch craft. Having the correct information with you will help you make the correct choice first time all the time. Good luck and stay safe!

Cheers,
Red

Hello <LI-USER uid="23215"></LI-USER>

Bathroom vanity doors for all their strength and finish will eventually degrade and fail. I have yet to see a bathroom door exposed to high moisture not get destroyed. How ever it all depends on how much effort you wish to spend on this particular problem. The doors finish either powder coated or laminated foil seal has failed. Hence the cracks have occurred. Moisture will now enter the door and proceed to damage it. What can we do to perhaps repair the door?

1. Remove the door carefully making sure to put the screws aside so that we can re-connect it later once we have repaired the door.

2. Using sandpaper, sand the cracked side of the door and use builders bog to repair the cracked area. Once it has dried simply use a spray can of gloss white to lightly coat the top of the door until you have a similar or close finish to the rest of the vanity. I suggest to ask the stores paint specialist in selecting the color of the spray can. We don't want to paint it a different color!

3. Try washing the cracks on the door with light soap and water to remove the brown stains in the cracks. Dry immediately with a dry towel and make sure to use Selleys 150g No More Gaps Multipurpose Gap Filler Tube. Use a flat plastic spatula to gently spread it over the cracks make the filling as light as possible then use a finishing sand paper such as 600 grit to lightly and I mean lightly sand the top of the door until the excess filler is gone. I hope these light repair suggestions work for you. Good luck and stay safe!

Cheers,

Red

Your laundry looks so much lighter and brighter. Thank you so much for sharing this project. I'm sure you will have inspired many others. Are you having a bit of a break now? Or do you have the next project in mind?

Hi there!

I have some new ceramic tiles which were "given" a decade ago, (brought over from Bali) that can go in my bathroom but I don't particularly like them greatly.

However with 100% moisture levels in corners of the old laminate currently there now time for a fix.

So should I use these tiles, FREE (a friend who has started a handyman business recently has offered to do so, he's done tiling but not waterproof before but used to be an engineer) or should I go for a hybrid tile or Hanwood - https://www.bunnings.co.nz/hanwood-7-5mm-classic-oak-wpc-waterproof-flooring_p0014474

Ideas appreciated please?

Thanks

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER uid="23215" login="Namrata"></LI-USER>. It's fantastic to have you join us and many thanks for your question.

You can take the door with you into your local Bunnings and see if a suitable replacement is available. Simply unscrew the four screws, and the hinges will come off. There's not much I can think of that could fix the cracking issue as it is a failed coating.

Let me mention <LI-USER uid="1050" login="redracer01"></LI-USER> to see if he has any ideas.

My recommendation is to get a Shaw and mason spout with manual diverter. But I am not sure if you can get it there in NZ. Your only other option is to modify your bath spout with a diverter and link your shower hose to the spout. As it is a mechanical diversion your current water pressure will stay the same. I've put some pictures below to give you and idea. Good luck and stay safe.

Cool Banana's

Red

Hi <LI-USER uid="23191" login="Maxtiger"></LI-USER>,

I did manage to find the Bliss Shower Mixer Diverter, which states it is suitable for low-pressure.

It turns out the issue with diverters, and low-pressure systems are that the switch is generally spring-loaded and needs mains pressure to return it after being pressed. Our supplier Methven suggested that an option would be to install two low-pressure mixers, one for the bath and one for the shower. Here's the range of Methven mixers to choose from, under the specifications tab you can see details on their suitability for low pressure.

Hello <LI-USER uid="23182"></LI-USER>

Welcome to workshop and I'm glad you asked! Your first bathroom can be done in that configuration however we can't have the vanity and the toilet opposite each other as the space between them will not be big enough to walk through or rather it would be very tight. A standard vanity is usually 450mm to 480mm in depth and the toilet is usually 600mm to 650mm sometimes over. Joined together you get 1130mm which leaves a space of just over half a meter to walk through. So our solution to this is to have the toilet and vanity side by side. This will fulfill the "no toilet in front of the door" rule and is a straight walk to the shower. The vanity partially hides the toilet and is not immediately visible. You can swap positions ( toilet and vanity )depending on the plumbing situation if possible.

As for the new shower and the vanity in the second toilet I recommend Rick McLeans shower door kit ( photo at bottom ). As for the vanity you can get only a compact 450 wide floor standing or wall hanging unit. It must be a square basin to maximize the opening space of the shower door. You can't get a semi recess basin as it will impact on the shower door swing making it very difficult to get in to the shower. Tile choice is up to you, you can get a timber tile look that appeals to you. I hope the drawings help you to visualize how your new bathrooms will look. If you have any more questions please post here at workshop. Good luck and stay safe.

Cheers,

Red

A crack in the seat sounds like a bit of an issue, and I'm not sure whether a replacement tap seat would fix that <LI-USER uid="12867" login="Krusty"></LI-USER>. I believe the water will try to migrate around the seal and through the crack.

Please let us know how you go and if you decide to go down the path of replacing the lower tap body.

Thanks Mitchell they were the push in Kinetic sleeves, the original seat I think were reamed too far with the smallest tool as there are 2 sizes and now the seal becomes stuck in the recess but does not seal properly and there seems to be a break in the seat creating a channel for water to leak,I will try your suggested seal kit but can replace the bottom body if I have some direction with what to replace with,Great response,Krusty.

I'll need to look into that further for you tomorrow <LI-USER uid="23191" login="Maxtiger"></LI-USER> as it appears most suppliers in NZ have closed for the evening. However, I haven't been able to find any diverters that are for low pressure, and I believe this could be because they use a ceramic disc mixer on them.

I'll investigate further and update you when I have an answer.

Hi <LI-USER uid="12867" login="Krusty"></LI-USER>,

Were the sleeves you used something like Kinetic 12mm Push In Tap Seats? This is what you would use if you're having difficulty reaming the tap seat flat. When you say the tap seats have been over-reamed it sounds like they are flat, but the washer no longer makes contact as the seat is too deep. If this is the case, you could try installing a HydroSeal Tap Seat Replacement Kit as this kit has threaded seats.

I believe installing ceramic disc tap spindles could solve this issue if the seats are in good shape, just out of reach. The spindles on these have an outer nut which is adjusted up and down, allowing the spindle body to contact the seat. They have a lot more adjustability than the older style spindles in regards to the depth at which they make contact with the seat. They'll still only adjust 10mm but this might be enough to solve the issue.

You install them by removing the outer nut/cover flange threaded section and then screwing the tap body down until the seal meets the tap seat. The outer nut is then screwed onto the tap body. Hopefully, once you have screwed the tap body in, you'll still have enough thread exposed to screw the outer nut onto it.

Mitchell

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER uid="23182" login="Klutz28"></LI-USER>. It's fabulous that you've joined us and many thanks for sharing your project.

I'll be looking forward to seeing <LI-USER uid="1050" login="redracer01"></LI-USER>'s rendering as I trust it will provide some amazing inspiration. I really like the idea of using sliding barn doors as they will allow you to use the whole floor plan in the compact ensuite.

I'm not in favour of having exhaust fans directly over showers. My current fan is placed directly above the shower, and in winter it drips cold condensed steam back down onto you. I managed to solve this to an extent by putting a more powerful unit in, but I feel it would work just as well if it were located slightly outside the cubicle.

Frameless showers are relatively easy to install, make sure you get one designed for the surface you'll be placing it on. Some directly fix onto the tiles, and others are only to be placed on a shower base.

I can't wait to follow along with your project. Please let us know if you have further questions once <LI-USER uid="1050" login="redracer01"></LI-USER> has contributed his rendering.

<LI-USER uid="23182"></LI-USER> you might want to have a play around with an online 3D planner like this caroma one

Just wondering about the placement of the window and door. If you put the door opposite the window you could improve privacy for the toilet. The general rule of thumb is not to have the door opening right on to the toilet. Alternatively you could consider a half wall to reduce looking in on the toilet from the window.

Hi folks, looking for some advice please on layout for a bathroom renovation, where a bathtub is being removed and a toilet put into the existing bathroom, and where the existing toilet is, building a compact ensuite to the second bedroom around that, so turning one bathroom into two. Here are some photos and drawings of the current and proposed layout of the original bathroom which is 1630mm wide and 2570mm long. NB: I will be redoing the floors (with a family friend’s help) due to damage.

With the proposed layout, placement of the new toilet on the left is due to the window opening being on the right. Placement of the showerhead and screen is flexible, are they ok on the left, with a ceiling exhaust fan on the right? Basically does the placement work, or am I overlooking anything maybe plumbing-wise? The potential use of barn doors is to save space. Also looking for recommendations on type of shower, the frameless option I think helps make it feel more spacious and looks modern, but I don’t know how easy they are to install?

The standalone toilet is 820mm wide by 1650 long, and as an ensuite will be a space of 820mm by 2570mm. What kind of shower enclosure is best, and what is the largest vanity that would still work in the small space?

If someone could please help me with one of those 3D drawings, that would be excellent, anything would beat my hand-drawn efforts. Current bathroomProposed layoutProposed ensuite

I have been inspired by this post here:

https://www.workshop.bunnings.com.au/t5/Bathroom-and-Laundry/Bathroom-renovation-in-old-home-with-no-toilet/td-p/31095

and I’m in favour of the recommendation to use timber-look tiles in both bathrooms and quite open to suggestions in general.

As promised here are the photos of my completed overhead cupboards with glass installed, instead of gluing the top rail of each door I decided against it, just incase I need to replace the glass, if it was accidently broken. The glass fitted in nicely in the 6mm grooves on the doors.

As you can seen in this photo I used small brass screws to hold the rails in place, if this doesn't work I will have to glue them in place.

Door with broadline glass.

Cupboard door with broadline glass fitted

Photo with side panelPhoto with bottom panel

Cupboard, Tasmanian oak doors , side and bottom panel

I have attached some photo's for you to look at.

I started learning to use these type of power tools in the last couple of years, I say have a go, if it fails you can always make

Wow <LI-USER uid="20862"></LI-USER> those doors look amazing. I’d love to make shaker style doors for my kitchen but as a newbie to all of this It seems daunting so I’m wondering if I should stick with plain MDF slabs. What tools did you use for the joins on the cupboard doors? Table saw and router?

Hello <LI-USER uid="22752"></LI-USER>

Looking at the layout of the bathroom the designers have made some very well hidden choices that make it look roomy. The toilet is a floor standing unit with an in-wall cistern presenting a much shorter profile. It will however require specialized mounting and fitting. They maximized the vanity space by placing a corner unit instead of a straight unit. The corner type vanity is not currently available at Bunnings but it is still possible to acquire this in the open market. Perhaps its is the way the photo was taken but the color I see is almond ivory. To make the room look even bigger I suggest plain white and perhaps a neutral colored wall. The tiles they used on the floor is meant to be confusing as it breaks up the view. The door has been mounted as such that it opens out instead of in, providing maximum walk in space. The only issue i see with the current set up is that when a tall person is sitting on the toilet their left knee is in contact with the door of the vanity. Perhaps a straight narrow vanity would be more preferable. Good luck and stay safe!

Red

Almost finished. I had the mirror installed and decided to put clear plastic across the bottom. I have also moved the washing machine into the bathroom as well and I have built around it to enclose it off from the vanity. I still have to put a couple of shelves above that. But here it is for now.

Well here they are, couldn't wait until the overhead laundry cupboards were completed, over the weekend I installed my overhead laundry cupboards, as it is not fully completed, I still need to fit the side and bottom panels, hopefully the glass I ordered will be in by this week, I am using a glass called Broadline.

I will post more photo's when the project is complete.

The first step will be to sand all the painted areas. You don't need to sand completely through the paint, just enough to remove the sheen level, and so it isn't super smooth. Using Flexovit 100mm x 1m 180 Grit Painted Surfaces Sandpaper Roll would be the best option. Next, you must prime all the areas you have sanded, including the patched and filled locations with Dunlop 1L Multipurpose Water Based Primer. You'll then be able to apply your tile adhesive and tiles.

Please let me know if you have questions.
