To answer your questions, I last fertilised about 7 months ago and very recently, a week ago. I water twice a week with enough water to all parts of the lawn.

Not the most regular in lawn mowing but here is my plan for my thick blade buffalo grass:

Mow it down to the lowest level in next week or so.

Aerate the soil.

Overseed where needed with tall fescue.

Mow regularly every week without fail.

Is that a good plan for autumn or should I wait until spring to do this?

Hopefully <LI-USER uid="3777"></LI-USER> has some opinion.

Hi <LI-USER uid="13040" login="kashgenius"></LI-USER>,

This is a pretty common look to a lawn that has been cut short. With regular cutting at this same length, the yellow spots will clear up. The yellow areas are formed when the grass grows out in length, and the lower areas stop receiving sunlight. For instance, if you let your lawn grow for several weeks in summer and then cut it, the entire lawn will be yellow.

When was the last time you fertilised, and what is your watering regime like?

Let me also mention one of our knowledgeable horticulturists, <LI-USER uid="3777" login="Adam_W"></LI-USER>, to see if he can give us his opinion.

Hi all,

I have a problem where I see patches of yellow/white when I mow my lawn but is otherwise green when the grass height is high. I cannot seem to figure out the issue. Could it be due to fertiliser burn? Or do I need to aerate more. Pictures attached.

As I mentioned, these only appear after I mow the lawn.

Hi <LI-USER uid="23208" login="chengjianer"></LI-USER>,

<LI-USER uid="5214" login="Noelle"></LI-USER> and <LI-USER uid="3777" login="Adam_W"></LI-USER> provided alternative products, which will also work. To clarify, the Hortico 750ml Insect Killer Ready To Spray Tomatoes And Vegetables will solve your issue. However, you will need to do a few applications and hit the caterpillars with it. Give the plants a good spray down, making sure to get under all the leaves where the caterpillars hide during the day. You might have more success going out at night when the caterpillars are more active.

Please let me know if you have questions.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER uid="23313" login="jaksmc"></LI-USER>. It's amazing that you've joined us, and many thanks for your question.

Ah, the age-old question every keen gardener has of "What is digging holes in my yard?". We have several ongoing discussions within the community, with members giving some suggestions about what could be digging the holes. The consensus is that many creatures can burrow into and out of your soil, and it could be any of them.

You might like to read through these previous topics to see if there is anything that sounds familiar:

After a Google search, my best guess is that Antlions, the larvae of Lacewings, have caused your holes. They create a distinctive cone-shaped hole almost identical to those in your image. In fact, it isn't actually a hole they've buried out of, but more-so a trap they've created. The larvae sit at the bottom of the cone and wait for an unsuspecting insect to slide down the slippery slops of the pit. Perhaps you could take a shovel and dig up one of the cones to see if you can find the larvae.

I look forward to us solving this mystery. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER uid="23304" login="Sajee"></LI-USER>. It's fantastic that you've joined us and many thanks for your question.

Depending on the Yates Zero product you have used, there are different withholding periods before you can replant. If you've used the Zero Rapid, you'll need to wait one week, and if it is the Zero Super Concentrate, then you'll need to wait three weeks.

I hope that answers your question, but please feel free to let me know if there is anything else. We look forward to seeing your raised garden bed planted out and producing veggies and flowers.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER uid="23296" login="Redbomber85"></LI-USER>. It's fabulous that you've joined us, and many thanks for your question.

For your bush/hedge not to look hacked at, it needs regular maintenance. There are a couple of things that need to be done to maintain a hedge's shape. First, you need to establish the basic shape, and this might require a hard prune back if the plant is overgrown. This can be the hacked situation you are envisaging. Not to worry, this is just the base structure of your hedge and will be covered up the following season. You'll then prune the new growth each year to establish the form of the hedge. It's a great idea to prune late-spring, so the recent growth doesn't harden and become woody. If you wait the full growing season before pruning, you'll need to do a hard prune, and the hedge will look bare for a while.

When you are beginning to use a hedge trimmer, it's a great idea to stretch out a string line, so you have something straight to follow along. Even some of the best gardeners use a string line to establish a perfect hedge. It is also important to feed your hedge, as it will allow it the energy to fill in any locations that are a bit patchy, and I'd suggest Scotts Osmocote Landscape.

Let me mention the very knowledgeable <LI-USER uid="3777" login="Adam_W"></LI-USER> to see if he has any hints or tips on getting a fantastic looking hedge.

Re: kids planter box advice

What a fantastic planter box you've created there <LI-USER uid="10857"></LI-USER>!

Will you be placing this unit out in the weather? If so, you might experience issues with it filling up with rainwater and becoming a pond. Drainage holes will be needed to prevent this.

If it is going to live undercover, then you could turn it into a wicking bed system. You'd start by filling the bottom 5cm with aggregate and covering it with drain matting. Holes can be cut in the drain matting, and a natural fibre rope pushed through them. The rope allows the water to be drawn up out of the reservoir and into the soil. You still need to pay attention to not overwatering, and a hole placed on the side 5cm from the bottom will allow excess water to overflow. I've drawn a rough image below to illustrate.

Hey brain trust how are we on this cool sunday of 36 degree heat...

Ok I've done a 30min kids planter box project at home using scrap wood from my last project. What im wondering is this... do planter box that sit off the ground need drainage holes? Ive lined the inside with black plastic and tried to seal it as much as i can so it retains water more so, as i know boxes like these do dry out fast. Or is this more of a management of how much water goes in. Dimensions of the box is 1160L x 450W x 180H and inside is lined with black plastic

Re: Avocado Tree turning black

Hi <LI-USER uid="16046" login="NumeroUno"></LI-USER>,

How long ago did you plant it there, and what type of soil is it planted in? Avocados can be quite susceptible to transplant shock, and often the top few inches of their branches and leaves will turn back. Generally, with care, they will re-bud directly below the blackened area.

Rot root can also be an issue if the trying to grow them in clay-based soil or with inadequate drainage. They need well-draining moist soil but don't appreciate wet feet. A deep watering twice per week should be adequate, and only if the top few inches of soil are dry. Unfortunately, over-watering symptoms look very similar to those seen in under-watered plants, so most people will continue to water, making the situation worse.

Let me mention the knowledgeable <LI-USER uid="3777" login="Adam_W"></LI-USER> and <LI-USER uid="5214" login="Noelle"></LI-USER> to see if they could share their thoughts.

Hi. I have a young avovado tree that was thriving but the heat burnt the leaves and turned the stem black from top down. I have since pruned it and added mulch but still turning black. Not sure if the stems below are pests either? Any recommendations for products to resolve e.g. if root rot?

Hi Mitchell,

I guess I have been lucky. I was able to find a ton of earthworms near my fence and helped them to my veggie patch.

Apart from this, regular cleaning, trimming decayed / dead leaves, and a couple of pots of marigold nearby would have contributed to the harvest.

Great advice there <LI-USER uid="9368" login="mich1972"></LI-USER>! However, please remember to take them down for the sake of future occupants before leaving the property. I recently advised an absolutely distraught lady about the two huge black snakes that had taken up residence on her tin shed roof. After a quick back and forth discovering that she had fruit trees, I deduced they were fake rubber snakes left by a previous occupant. She was still adamant they were real, and only after several hours of them not moving did she gain the courage to poke one with a stick. At least, she had a good enough sense of humour to come back and tell me they were indeed fake.

Hi <LI-USER uid="23229" login="johncen"></LI-USER>,

I'd be interested in hearing more about what you would like to achieve with this make-over. What don't you like about the current garden, what would you like to see more of, and what are some items you would like to add? Perhaps you'd like a water feature, some tiered gardens or a rockery and maybe more flowering plants? Here's a great garden planner from Gardena, which you'll find useful in setting out your ideas.

You might like to get started by removing all the weeds and grass from between the plants and covering those areas with several layers of newspaper and some hardwood mulch. Once you've established the plants you'd like to keep, you can work from there, adding to the selection.

I look forward to hearing more about your project and providing some advice and inspiration. Please have a read through the articles provided by <LI-USER uid="22750" login="JaneK"></LI-USER> above and let us know if you have questions.

Hi <LI-USER uid="23208"></LI-USER>

The spray you have bought will work, but only if it is sprayed directly on to the caterpillars and other pests - it is what is known as a contact insecticide. It needs to make direct contact with the pests.

You may do better with a tomato and vegetable dust, which applies a powder to the leaves of your vegies. When the caterpillars crawl over it or eat sections of leaves with the dust on them, it will kill them. It will also protect against some fungal diseases. Just make sure to wash your vegies in fresh water to remove traces before preparing them for the table.

We had them on the lawn as well but moved them into the garden as we did not want them to ruin the lawn.

We have added a basic gate made from the Reo Mesh and star pickets and wire.

I live beside a forest reserve and bush turkeys roam the suburb. They seem to know whenever you dig or put mulch on the garden and they dig it out and spread it everywhere. Can be heartbreaking when you just bought and planted a heap of new seedlings and plants.

Hey <LI-USER uid="9368"></LI-USER> that's a great idea for rubber snakes.

I did a similar thing when I had Bush Turkeys digging up my new garden. I placed a big rubber red bellied black snake in front of the garden and they stayed away. Each year when new young turkeys come around I put it out on the lawn and move it each day, works a treat.

Cheers,

Stuart

Good morning Workshop Community Friends !!!!!!

If you are growing your own Edibles or you have a Chook Run or Bird Aviary, you will unfortunately have Rats and Mice hanging around and moving in. That’s life.

We have a problem with rats as we grow edibles and have chooks. Our Nextdoor neighbours have an aviary so the rats are living in luxury !

We have our cage trap set every night and we catch a few, but they are smart and start avoiding the cage. We also have a safe bait station that doesn’t cause secondary poisoning to pets. That works well.

But this is something I would love to share with you all is a Rat deterrent.

RUBBER SNAKES

We have a beautiful Pomegranate in our chook run that is loaded with fruits.
Unfortunately the rats were demolishing them. I had read about using rubber snakes as a deterrent and wanted to try it out. So I purchased a few rubber snakes and wrapped them around branches of the Pomegranate. This experiment has been running for nearly two months and I must say , the branches with fruits and snakes have NOT been touched at all !!
The higher up branches with no snakes the rats have eaten. We are really pleased to say we have saved some of our fruits and will be adding a few more snakes to the tree.

Once the Pomegranate has finished fruiting and goes fully dormant in Winter, we will be giving it a hard prune to control its growth and once it starts to set fruits again we will be ready for the snakes.

The rubber snakes come autumn winter will be transferred to our Edible No Dig Garden and we will see how they go deterring rats from our vegetables !!!

Hi All,

I have just started harvesting my climbing beans. 1.5kg in 3 days.

There will be too many to eat as they grow very quick once they start to mature.

I will blanch them and put in zip lock bags, enough for meals, then freeze them and use as required.

Excess tomatoes are generally made into relish.

Chillies are hung on string lines and when dried minced to make flakes which then can be used throughout the year.

I also freeze chillies and can the use them all through the year.

Any other excess is given away to family and friends.

I have seen where some houses have put a table or box at the front of their property and is used to trade excess produce.

It works on the principle of swapping your excess veggies for the other persons excess.

My daughter does this and it doesn't take too long for the surrounding neighbourhood to catch on.

👍🍻

I had a different and humorous approach with "chicken wire" over a roofing iron fence and star pickets, but it could be over any boundary.

I tied it well at the bottom but tied the top with bungee chord and 100% success.

They climbed the chicken wire and it bent outwards away from my crops, capsicums , tomatoes, corn, bok choi and when they reached the top they would step off onto the ground hehehehe. They soon got sick of that hehehe, the wire would spring back up like a fence. Cheers.

If you are not aware of the grass, then the Hortico product will be suitable. That appears to be crabgrass, and the Brunnings 500ml Paspalum Kill Selective Herbicide will remove it. After you aerate your lawn, I would then apply a 40mm layer of Hortico 25L Lawn Top Dress Mix, so the seeds have something nice to germinate in.

Hi <LI-USER uid="5877" login="Dexter"></LI-USER>,

In addition to the comprehensive advice offered by both <LI-USER uid="22750" login="JaneK"></LI-USER> and <LI-USER uid="5214" login="Noelle"></LI-USER>, here are several step-by-step guides you should find useful:

How To Grow Grass From Seed

How To Revive Your Lawn

A suitable selective broadleaf weed killer would be Yates 250ml Buffalo Pro Selective Bindii And Broadleaf Weedkiller Concentrate. As suggested by <LI-USER uid="5214" login="Noelle"></LI-USER>, this is safe for Buffalo lawns and suitable for most common grass types. For the crabgrass, I would recommend Brunnings 500ml Paspalum Kill Selective Herbicide.

The Hortico 1kg Tough And Drought Hardy Lawn Seed you have selected is a mix of fast-growing, tough lawn seed blended to suit most Australian conditions. If you know what the lawn was originally, you could purchase that type of seed. If you have a couch lawn, then you would purchase Hortico 500g Couch Lawn Seed.

Hi <LI-USER uid="3313" login="gns529"></LI-USER>,

Raised garden beds sound like a great idea, and some Australia native species would be suitable. You might like to consider Bottlebrushes, Coastal Rosemarys, Callistemons, Grevilleas or Lilly Pillys. Native hedges are often open and airy in their growing habits, and you must prune them to provide adequate screening. If left to grow naturally, you'll find most times they will end up quite lanky.

Hi <LI-USER uid="19125"></LI-USER>

Clover, bindii, creeping oxalis, dandelions and other broadleaf weeds can be eradicated with a selective broadleaf lawn weeder product. There are several different brands available in Bunnings so ask a team member if you are unsure which would be best in your situation. Make certain the one you use is safe to use on your grass type. To be on the safe side, look for a product that says it can be used on buffalo lawns, which means it is probably safe for most types of grass.

Crabgrass needs special treatment - the usual broadleaf weedicides generally won't work on it. Look for a specific crabgrass killer and follow the directions.

When your lawn is weed-free, aerate it, rake off all the dead weeds and lawn thatch, topdress and then sow a lawn seed suited to your existing grass. If you have a buffalo lawn and are faced with large areas of bare soil, consider buying a metre or so of instant turf to cover them. Make sure you do the prep correctly before laying turf.

Thanks for jumping in to the discussion with a great question <LI-USER uid="19125"></LI-USER>.

I'm sure you'll get some great advice on how to improve the condition of your lawn from the gardening gurus in the Bunnings Workshop community, <LI-USER uid="5214"></LI-USER> and <LI-USER uid="3777"></LI-USER>. In the meantime there is a bit more information on how to weed your lawn available here. If you'd like some more specific advice about the best treatment for eradicating different types of weeds, you can always take the weeds from your garden into your local Bunnings store where you'll find someone able to help.

I'll reach out via PM to get additional details on your local store so I can verify that they can cut the Formply for you.

Standard Australian Builders 20kg Quick Set Concrete would be perfect for your project. I'd recommend you consider adding some reinforcement mesh to ensure that your block of concrete doesn't crack. I would also advise you to follow the directions on the product as to how wet the mix should be.

Hi Varun (<LI-USER uid="18330"></LI-USER>),

I apologise for that link not working for you. Here's another Mother Earth 1m3 Lawn Mix which you should find available in the Melbourne area. I believe the bulk product would be a higher quality mix than the Richgro 25L All Purpose Organic Compost. The Richgro compost, being a budget product, has a significant amount of bark in it. It will also be more cost-effective to order the bulk mix.

You could use the Fine Farms 25L Blended Cow Manure. However, if you were to mix it 1:1 with fill, you might end up burning the grass as it will have a very high manure content. I recently used it 1:1 in a raised garden bed and found the plants struggled until it aged.

Mitchell

I want to build a plinth to go under a heavy stone garden statue. I am thinking to do that by using form ply made into a box about 500 high 400x400 and filling with concrete. Questions. Will Bunnings cut the ply sheet into those sides? Also if I use standard premix bagged concrete mixed quite wet it should hold up alright, yah reckon?

Hi Mitchell,

Thanks for responding with great suggestions.

I wasn't able to access the first link you provided (probably because I'm based in Melbourne and I see NSW in the product name).

Regarding your suggestion of the top dress and underlay, I was hoping for something less expensive considering I would need at least 1 cu.m. of this stuff for the 1:1 or 1:2 blend (ratio of compost to fill soil). I would like to know your and other experience people's thoughts on maybe like https://www.bunnings.com.au/richgro-25l-all-purpose-organic-compost_p2961502 or https://www.bunnings.com.au/fine-farms-25l-blended-cow-manure_p2961628 to add organic content to the fill soil. I'm hoping a 1:2 blend would still keep the soil sandy enough for the grass turf to be laid over it.

Varun

That's certainly a fantastic crop you've achieved there <LI-USER uid="15069" login="Andy_J"></LI-USER>. Those eggplants are amazing! I am very envious, as I wouldn't say I've been that successful.

Are there any tips or tricks about your growing method you'd like to share with our community members, as I trust your bounty will be of great inspiration?

Well done.

Summer is almost over and I just wanted to share some photographs of my summer harvest.

I had four types of peas and beans and while I had a good harvest, I have unfortunately not taken any photographs.

Below are photographs from today's harvest.

Hi <LI-USER uid="23110" login="Elly2"></LI-USER>,

Once our in-store workshops recommence, please feel free to contact the Activities Organiser at your nearest store. I trust they would be more than happy to hear about your interest in an introductory power tools D.I.Y. session and do their best to organise one. Most of our stores will also hold a monthly ladies' D.I.Y. class that encompasses a brilliant mix of beginner skills. They might make a chopping board or perhaps a garden pot stand, fantastic projects to get you started on your own D.I.Y. adventure.

Please let me know if you need any assistance, as I'd be more than happy to contact your local store for you.

Ranking herbs from easiest to hardest to grow

I don't want to jinx myself, but this year for the very first time, I think I have managed to grow basil from seed. I've been lucky to have a very productive herb garden but I've never had much luck with basil or coriander. I'm not sure if it's the location or the watering regime but I'm determined to keep on trying.

This got me thinking about which herbs the gardeners of Bunnings Workshop might struggle with.

If you had to, from easiest to hardest to grow, how would you rank the following herbs?

Basil

Chives

Dill

Mint

Oregano

Parsley

Rosemary

Thyme

EASIEST | Rosemary > Mint > Oregano > Parsley > Thyme > Chives > Dill > Basil > Coriander | HARDEST

Thanks Mitchell, thats very helpful info. I'll check out the link. Is there a list of specific classes that I could join when the possibility arises? I like the idea f learning how to use the Drill Driver, that would help me with small tasks around the house, but I would really like to make something, simple of course, nothing to complex.
