Thanks Jane - I have some photos which I don’t especially like but it’s just to get the gist of the ideas & concepts out there ...

What a great conversation starter <LI-USER uid="23324"></LI-USER>. Are you able to share the photos of the finish that you would like to achieve? That will help our community members to give you more specific advice to help you with this project.

Here are some chalked paint projects:

I'm not aware of any projects that use wallpaper, but <LI-USER uid="14838"></LI-USER> might be able to recall some.

Wondering if anyone has updated their old Pine Dressers with paint and/or wallpaper and how you went about it? We’re building a new house and the pine won’t go with the new decor. We’ll keep the lead lighting in the door though as we like it. Have seen some photos on Pinterest but wondering if anyone in here has done one and if so, what you used? This is what it looks like currently ...

You could use MDF for some of the unit, and it's potentially a good option. The boxed sections around the TV, for instance, could be made from it. However, since MDF is not timber, it doesn't like long unsupported lengths and will sag considerably. Those long shelves would need some support midway to prevent this.

Ply does this as well, but not to the same extent. An issue with plywood is that it's hard to achieve a high level of finish on its edges because of the laminations. If you were going to paint it, you'd likely have to fill the edge with timber putty and sand it down. To get a smooth surface on the ply, you also need to go from premium varieties.

I would advise using pine for this cabinet. It appears to be built off the floor, and nothing is attached solely to the wall. You could fix it with hidden L brackets to the studs to make sure it doesn't topple forward.

I'm eager to follow along, as this is going to be quite an impressive project. Please let me know if you have further questions.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER uid="23314" login="dennisj46"></LI-USER>. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question.

It would help our members give some expert advice if you could post an image of the joints you would like to strengthen. Is this an already assembled unit or one that you are going to build? Are the surfaces to be glued particle board, or will you be glueing the laminated surface?

In either case, I would advise to apply glue to the mating surfaces and then tighten the mechanical fixing to close the joint. PVA glue would be suitable for adhering particle board together, or you might like to use Selleys 460ml Aquadhere Durabond PVA Wood Glue as it is a high-strength polyurethane product and stronger than the PVA. You'll find most glues will not adhere to a laminated surface, as it is very smooth and doesn't allow the glue to penetrate. You could try clear Liquid Nails on the laminated surface, but you might want to roughen it up first with some 80 grit sandpaper to key the surface.

I look forward to hearing further details about your project and providing assistance along the way.

Fantastic work <LI-USER uid="17593" login="Maymay"></LI-USER>! That looks very well sealed now, and you shouldn't expect to see any dust and sand inside. I'm sure <LI-USER uid="12068" login="TedBear"></LI-USER> will be equally excited to see your finished job.

May I add that using the cheap drop sheets is fine, but I would recommend putting an old sheet or similar under the plastic drop sheet because if you get even a tiny hole in it, any paint that gets through will then get spread around the floor being sandwiched between floor and plastic sheeting. An old sheet will soak up small leaks and also stop the plastic sheet sliding around. (If you don't have one, try your local op shop. They usually have some awful curtains or sheets that no one would want to use as such.)

I've taken another look at your question and realised you would like some specifics on what equipment is needed <LI-USER uid="19424"></LI-USER>.

Most painting jobs around the home will require the following:

Drop sheet - I tend to purchase the disposable kind as they are budget-friendly and great for single walls. If you're planning on painting a whole house, you might like to consider something more substantial, like the canvas type.

Paint roller and tray - Rollers are great for covering large areas of wall quickly. I advise going for a roller at least 270mm wide for walls. A paint roller extension pole comes in handy getting to those hard to reach places.

Cutting in brush - A brush is used on areas where you can't fit a roller or for cutting in the architrave. You might like to invest in a medium quality brush as the better the quality the better the finish you'll achieve. I'd suggest something like the Monarch 75mm Cutting In And Framing Synthetic Paint Brush.

Painters tape - This is another area I would encourage you to purchase a premium brand. The better quality tapes provide cleaner lines with less bleed through and are easier to remove without peeling off the paint. A roll of ScotchBlue 36mm x 55m Original Multi-Surface Painter’s Masking Tape will cover you from taping down drop sheets to masking off architrave.

For further expert advice have a look at <LI-USER uid="3216"></LI-USER> article on how to paint like a professional.

Chalk paint, by its very nature, gives an aged and vintage look. It was designed to be applied over stained and coated timber furniture to give it a shabby-chic appearance. Perhaps you might be better off with paint like Dulux Aquanamel.

Hello <LI-USER uid="22471"></LI-USER>

After much deliberation I would like to suggest the following re-arrangement.

1. Move the entire laundry area to the garage. Turn your current laundry space in to your WIR.

2. There is enough space in the garage to house the laundry, linen and utilities.

I've redone your floor plan to reflect the suggestions please have a look and tell me what you think. I have thought about expanding your current wardrobe area and it is just too ungainly both in shape and size to justify the effort. Better to move one of your rooms out to convert. But these are just suggestions tell us what your thoughts are. Oh and I've placed a door at the garage so that you still have access to the washing line outside.

Cheers

Red

If you let our helpful team in-store know the colour you want to paint over, they'll provide a suitably tinted undercoat. The very fine cracks should only take a fine sanding to smooth out, and the under-coat should take care of them.

You should find these step-by-step guides useful:

Hi <LI-USER uid="19424"></LI-USER>,

You can certainly repair that damaged plaster, but I would advise to shift the location of the bracket to an un-damaged section. Better yet, fit it into a timber stud if available. You might also like to change the pole brackets to something similar to Windoware 33mm Natural Wood Pole Brackets - 2 Pack as they have two mounting holes instead of one. As you've found, a singular mounting fixing isn't really strong enough to hold up curtains and will pull out.

Also I have very dark brown wall and I like to paint to light grey so do I need to take any additional steps before I paint?

One more thing looking to fill broken gyprock and very fine cracks in the wall before I paid so what should I buy?

Thanks in advance

Wood filler is normally a soft material that sands easily, and I'm not sure why yours would turn white. Can I also see the sandpaper you are using? Should have listened to myself. I put a wood filler into chips. I sanded back the other half of the table this morning and of course it has left its white markings behind.

What is left of it of course clogs up my sandpaper.

Hi <LI-USER uid="22471" login="JessMiller15"></LI-USER>,

What is the size of the current wardrobe and do you believe it would take up too much of the room if you installed a partition wall as per my image below? I would suggest that keeping the current size of the ensuite would hold more value to the property than a Walk-in robe. I'm sure there are many people out there considering removing a walk-in to make their en-suite larger. Like you've mentioned, it's a nice to have item, but I would be hesitant to compromise the functionality of an en-suite because of it.

There is a tonne of solutions for fitting out a slimline walk-in wardrobe and making maximum usage of that space.

Hi all,

After getting such wonderful input on our kitchen plans I thought I'd throw out to the community again. One of the things we are toying with is whether there is any capacity to fit a WIR in our master bedroom. It's more of a 'nice to have' rather than 'must have but it seems to add a bit to the resale price. There may be some scope to change the layout of the laundry and ensuite to fit this but not sure if we are just trying to fit too much in and would end end up with small squished spaces, a lot of work and not much payoff. Any thoughts on whether it may be possible to incorporate this would be great!

Hi Maymay, I just had a much closer look at your earlier pics, where it appeared that the door was damaged, but isn't... I see that someone has put some sealing tape (looks like felt tape) along the bottom of one door's overlap, but on the wrong surface. I think that this is what is stopping the door from being able to close properly. Sealing tape must go on one of the faces that would touch each other. Ie a face that is in line with the glass. The tape I see is in line with the wall. This will make it hard for the door edges to slide past each other and close properly, and even if it doesn't, it won't provide any seal there anyway. Remove all of that tape and replace it with that which <LI-USER uid="14838"></LI-USER> suggests, but it must go on the bit that sticks out from the doors, so that the corresponding flap on the other door will press against it and seal any gap when it closes.

Hi <LI-USER uid="21065" login="Ema"></LI-USER>,

You might find it hard to purchase a natural rattan, and it might be easier to find a synthetic alternative. You could adhere natural rattan with PVA wood glue and a synthetic with contact adhesive. Personally, I would prefer the look of natural rattan. However, on a tabletop, it could be an idea to use synthetic as a natural material will wear fairly quickly.

We have the Feast Watson Liming White available, which would work well for your project.

To lime wash, you must sand your timber to a smooth surface and remove all dust before coating. Previously varnished surfaces need to be sanded to a dull finish. Use an off-cut or on an inconspicuous area to test the colour to ensure you are happy with your choice. Make sure the Stain and Varnish is thoroughly stirred through before starting.

Apply Stain & Varnish using a brush, roller or spray. Stain & Varnish may be thinned by using 10% mineral turpentine. If applying by roller, use a short nap (5mm) mohair roller. Ensure edges and end grain are fully coated. Provide 12 hours drying time between coats. Sand lightly between coats with fine sandpaper to get the best results. If applying over a previous varnish coating, two coats will be sufficient.

It sounds like a great project and I can't wait to see you get started. Please let us know if you have further questions. We're here to help.

Hi Mitchell

Thankyou for getting back to me so quickly. Basically I have a picture and an idea in my head of how I want the table to look like. My plan is to buy a large old round or oval timber dining table to upcycle... sand it back paint the base white, lime wash the top then attach the rattan/ cane on the top. Any advice on the best way to lime wash also would be great😉I have no idea which would be best, natural or synthetic?. I have already bought dining chairs to replace rattan and paint white. Thanks again look forward to your feedback.

Unfortunately I cannot clamp the panel because there is not an option to clamp it to anything. Just not doable. I do not have a lot of money and I am buying a fair few things today from Bunnings. The glue you suggested I believe would actually be perfect, it just does not suit my price range at the moment.

If you can squeeze some glue between the panels and then clamp them back into position, I believe it would hold. You might like to add a small Carinya 25 x 25 x 20 x 2mm Zinc Plated Angle Bracket internally, fixed into the top and side panel for additional support.

I actually think that is the best glue you have suggested considering what I will be using it for <LI-USER uid="14838"></LI-USER>

Ok if you take a look at the pictures, you can see that both panels on the side are leadlighted and glass. The panel on the left hand side has actually come away from the wood at the top. So it is interior not exterior. The panel is very loose as a result. I am not sure what caused that to happen, but there is no other damage internally around the area that I can see. So, I just want to secure that panel to the wood before I replace the glass that needs to go back into where there is missing glass. I hope that helps it easier to understand.

Wouldy

French polish would be a stand-alone finish and is not used in combination with a stain and varnish product. I'd encourage you to work with the stain and varnish products for this project, and in the future, you might like to restore an item with French polish.

Is this a natural rattan/cane webbing or a synthetic alternative? Also, what is the tabletop made from and if it is timber, does it have a varnish or coating? Perhaps you might like to show us an image of the tabletop, so our members have a better idea of what you are working with.

I look forward to hearing more about your project and providing some solutions for adhering your rattan to the tabletop.

Hi <LI-USER uid="22511" login="Wouldy"></LI-USER>,

You can mix stains and varnishes if they are both water or oil-based. You can not mix them if one is water-based and the other oil-based.

It would be worth looking at Cabot's range of stains and varnish. Our team can tint the Cabot's base colours sold on the shelf into hundreds of different colours. Here's the Cabot's colour visualiser where you can see some options.

Please keep us updated as I trust our members will be interested to see the finished result.

I think I am going to try this product from timber protect.

Timber Protect 250ml Oil Based Light Walnut One Coat Stain And Varnish (bunnings.com.au)

I can then put a French polish on top and see how it turns out. For me sanding back the entire thing wasn't really something I wanted to do as there are parts that are in pretty good condition. May still apply wax stick.

Also when I removed the veneer last night, I decided against the wet towel and iron method to soften the glue and make the veneer easily removable. It can make the wood bow and I really did not want that. I did not have a heat gun and I didn't want to automatically sand it. I removed the veneer on the top with a simple screwdriver and rubber mallet. It was a fair bit of work. Today, I sanded the top back using 80 grit. I am yet to go over it with 120 grit. I have to also use wood putty in some parts.

That is how far I have gotten with the project.

I did a spot test with some timber protect golden oak stain and varnish I had. Had to do a few coats. It has come close but it is not a match. I have a feeling that I may need to mix two stains together to get a match. Is that doable? This is the difficult challenge out of the whole project I think.

Perhaps a light furniture cleaner to perhaps remove the stains and to at least bring uniformity to the finish to the top of the cabinet. Very practical suggestions from <LI-USER uid="14838"></LI-USER> I would test before committing.

Red

I would advise doing a test section with a small amount of product in an inconspicuous location whatever finish you choose. If the stain isn't what you wanted, you can return it and select another one.

Hi Mitchell,

Thank you for all this info. I've worked out which way is preferable for me to go with this info and will do the job very nicely I believe. I am looking to match the existing timber on the units front.

I stripped the veneer last night off the top and am going to sand back today.

Hi <LI-USER uid="22511" login="Wouldy"></LI-USER>,

You'll find a lot of antique furniture is French polished with a shellac-based product. Are you looking to match the un-coated timber colour or the existing colour on the unit's front? If you want to keep the timber's natural colour, you will apply an un-tinted clear coat similar to Cabothane. This process would involve sanding the existing coating off the entire unit before coating. This will ensure all finishes are uniform. If you don't want to sand the heavy scratches out, you can try Waxstix to disguise them.

To restore this unit to original, I believe the method would be to sand the entire cabinet with a 180/240 grit sandpaper and then apply a French polish.

Let me mention <LI-USER uid="10749" login="APEX_Restore"></LI-USER> to see if they can offer any advice.

Just restoring it. I stripped the veneer off the top last night. I also took out the broken glass panel from the door and the smaller broken panel on the left side.

I'm just wondering what stain and varnish to get for the finish? Below is a chart for wood types. I'm look for a light yellow birch finish. I think that is the closest match to the color. What do you think?

There are some minor scratches and scuffs on other parts of the cabinet. I am actually reluctant to touch it. No sanding back if not needed. I'm wondering if I should use a mixture of actually just rubbing some if the scratches out with a microfibre cloth and a liquid solution I have here?

For the deeper scratches and scuffs I'm not sure what to do yet. Any suggestions? Remember it is veneer. Thank you.

I must admit that I'm guilty of hiding rat nests of cables out of sight. You've prompted me to check out our range of cable management solutions to see if there are some options to suit my needs. I want to organise the cables under my computer desk, but I need a system which I can easily add and remove them on the fly.

Try scraping it off first <LI-USER uid="23064" login="OneMansFool"></LI-USER>. I wouldn't advise even considering using paint stripper on an entire house, it's more for one square meter at most. It's also messy and not a great idea to use indoors.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER uid="23064" login="OneMansFool"></LI-USER>. It's fantastic that you've joined us and many thanks for your questions.

It's great to see you've already received some detailed advice from <LI-USER uid="1050" login="redracer01"></LI-USER>.

While we are on the subject of testing, if you have difficulty removing the paint and you start doing damage to the plaster/render, have a go at sanding the stroke marks out of the existing paintwork instead. A random orbital sander with 240 grit paper would remove them quite quickly. You could then prime and paint over it with a roller. I suspect the paint has adhered reasonably well to the wall and the chip you have pictured has only come away due to the fixing in the wall.

I'll be interested in following along and hearing how you go.

Hello <LI-USER uid="23064"></LI-USER>

Perhaps you can test a portion of the wall. As you've posted a picture I agree with your analysis that it is a bad paint job. Lets use a light duty scraper https://www.bunnings.com.au/uni-pro-100mm-real-good-paint-scraper_p1674113 Starting at the corner of that photo with a hole in it gently run the scraper under the paint and see if it will peel or lift using the scraper. If the paint comes off easily and large sections go with the scraper I suspect there was no primer used hence the paint comes off, but the problem was aggravated as more paint was laid on without removing the first faulty layer. However if it becomes very difficult to remove the rest of the paint I suggest to stop and possibly use a grinder with this disc https://www.bunnings.com.au/3m-4-inch-paint-and-rust-stripper-abrasive-disc_p6314180 fair warning I would probably be gentle with this as we don't want to eat in to the rendered wall adding more jobs to an otherwise difficult job already. If you do make a mistake it can be repaired with Render joint and patch from Dunlop. But our primary goal is to explore how bad the paint job is, how long did it take you to remove the bad paint on that single wall and is it worth the time and effort or do we just re-patch and paint? If you cleared the wall in reasonable time then it should be worth doing the rest of the rooms. Slow and steady for this test.

1. First we test if we can strip the bad paint with our light scraper on the test wall. Too hard? Then use other means to strip paint. ( electric tool and 3m paint remover pad etc. )

2. Time yourself, how long did it take to strip 1 wall? Too long then you might need to re-asses your goal for this paint job. Finished it in reasonable time, then proceed.

3 Assess the condition of the wall and ask your local Bunnings paint specialist on how to prep an old brick wall that's been rendered. Purchase necessary primer and paint and have at it!

I hope this has given you ideas on how you wish to proceed, please post if you have any other questions. If you can please post your progress with photos and comments on the job, it would be much appreciated and will help other members who are in the same boat as you! Good luck and stay safe. Looking forward to the progress!

Cheers,

Red

Hi folks. I recently bought an apartment in a 1970s brick block, w/ rendered brick interior walls in fairly shabby condition. It’s a fixer-upper. Every single wall is so badly textured that I thought it must have been the render itself:

Every single wall in the place looks like this…

But upon closer inspection, I think the real culprit is the 50 years of bad paint jobs:

But from what I can tell, the problem is entirely the paint, not the wall? Wall seems perfectly smooth under all that.

I have just had a read through a number of Paint Removal threads here, and they have been helpful. But if possible, I would like to get some advice specifically on my rendered brick walls — I am very unfamiliar with anything like this and am not sure what I should be expecting.

Am I right that removing the existing paint and starting again from the original smooth wall is the sensible way to go? Or will the original render be a bit too susceptible to damage as I am scraping the existing paint off? It is a generously-proportioned 3 bedroomer, so it will take me some time — but that’s OK, I have time. My main concern is just avoiding dumb decisions along the way.

Thanks!

It shows the wood in four different sizes. Does that mean I can get it in those sizes? I would roughly need 510 x 380 x 19mm

https://www.bunnings.com.au/1200-x-600-x-18mm-finger-jointed-oak-panel_p8330203

I see the stain you have mentioned but just not sure if that would be dark enough. The wood for this sewing machine is really quite dark. I think I may need to go even darker than the product you suggested. Maybe?

You might need to stain that light coloured Oak to something similar to the original timber. I test section using Feast Watson 50ml Oak Prooftint Interior Stain would be my advice.

I think it may be best to go with something like this <LI-USER uid="14838"></LI-USER>

https://www.bunnings.com.au/1200-x-600-x-18mm-finger-jointed-oak-panel_p8330203

I cannot do the measurements for the top piece I need to make because I do not have it in my possession yet. I would then stain and varnish it myself. Would this work for this project?

What size slab of oak do you need? We sell dressed Tasmanian Oak boards, and 135mm is likely the widest you'd get in a hardwood. You might have to join boards to get the width you are after or consider applying an Oak coloured stain to a wider Pine board. Alternatively, we have laminated hardwood panels in much larger widths.

Not the piece the machine sits on, the piece next to it. It is completely missing. I need a slab of oak and I am just wondering how I find out the cost from bunnings? I have usually just used wood I already have or got it from somewhere else. So, yeah want to buy it from bunnings. This is the first time I have done a project like this. I already have the brass hinges to go with it. Just need the wood to get it started. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

You'll want to measure the width of the gap and select a foam sealing tape of that same thickness or slightly thicker. If the gap is 3-5mm you would select Moroday 24 x 5mm x 10m Grey PE Foam Tape. The packaging conveniently notes the thickness in the top right-hand corner.

Re: Frames for displaying jigsaw puzzles

Hi <LI-USER login="douglas82" uid="22999"></LI-USER>,

To get started you would need a Craftright Mitre Box And Saw Set and a Craftright 8oz/ 226g Steel Claw Hammer.

As <LI-USER login="JaneK" uid="22750"></LI-USER> has mentioned, you can mount your puzzles easily by gluing them to a sheet of MDF board. I'd suggest using 6mm board as it will provide some rigidity. If you measure your puzzle's overall size and take those measurements to your closest Bunnings store, they can cut the board down for you. An appropriate glue to stick the pieces down would be PVA wood glue.

If you wanted to get fancy with it, you could start using picture frame borders around the outside and also using clear acrylic sheeting for the front. This will certainly give your puzzle frames a professional and finished appearance. The picture frame corners can be cut at 45-degree mitres using the previously mentioned mitre saw. The corners then get glued in place with the PVA glue and stabilised with corner reinforcement plates.

Since you have several puzzles to frame you might like to invest in a compound mitre saw. Even the budget-friendly options such as the Ozito 210mm 1600W 8¼" Compound Mitre Saw would make life much easier for you and give superior results.

Please let me know if you need further assistance or have questions.

Hello <LI-USER uid="23001"></LI-USER>

I tracked this down to a furniture store in Denmark called ikon kobenhavn. It is a very unique type of furniture but I imagine that once all that tile is on it will have a bit of weight to it. If you are doing it on the lack table furniture from ikea your first step is to choose a tile size.

1. The tile size has to be big enough so that it covers the legs with a single run, otherwise you will be spending time cutting the tiles down to make them fit. It may look a bit off balance if the tiles are not all the same size but, I could be wrong about the final look.

2. The tiles at the top will have to be laid in either three ways. First method is to have an overhang where the tiles at the top go past your table to cover the tiles coming up from the side. Second method is to do it the other way and the tiles at the side come up past the side of the table to meet up with the tiles on the table top. Third method is to leave a gap and have the tiles end at the edge of the table. Looking at the current picture above they have made a combination of both. The sides have come up to meet the top, but the front tiles of the table have been laid on the interior side having an overhang at the top.

3. This is a project that will require several days to allow the adhesive to dry properly. If it is grouted too early, moisture will get trapped behind the tile and it will possibly pop or dislodge itself from the table.

4. Although I have seen some videos where the tiler has tiled directly to the table, I think it is prudent to put primer on the surface of the table to ensure that the glue will "grip" on to the surface of your table. But that's me being very cautious.

5. I recommend a premixed bucket of Resaflex. It is a very flexible tile glue and is very easy to work with. The other option is Rubber modified tile adhesive also from Dunlop but you will have to mix this in a bucket.

6. Any grout mixture will work with this project.

7. Make sure to do this in an open space away from the elements as the adhesives mentioned will have a smell to them. You don't want that trapped in the house.

8. Once the glue and grout have dried I recommend to seal the whole table with "Tile and Grout Sealer" this will protect the table from spills and your grout lines remain fresh and unaffected.

If you are planning on painting a picture on the tile once you have finished tiling and grouting. The answer is yes you can, you can use either Dunlop tile paint or White Knight. Instructions to paint tile are usually at the back of the container and are in a step by step process. I hope this has given you ideas where to start. We would be truly grateful if you can post photos of your progress so that others can see how you made it. It is a fantastic project and will look good once finished. Good luck and stay safe.

Red

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER uid="23001"></LI-USER> and thanks for jumping right in with a great question.

You're in exactly the right place. We're here to help. Could you share the dimensions of the table so we have a better idea of the scale of the project. The wonderful <LI-USER uid="1050"></LI-USER> and <LI-USER uid="14838"></LI-USER> will definitely be able to point you in the right direction to get started on this D.I.Y. project. I'm hoping <LI-USER uid="52"></LI-USER> might have some tiling tips for you too.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community <LI-USER uid="22999"></LI-USER>.

Congratulations on completing your jigsaw puzzles. I've found a video with steps on how to make a D.I.Y. picture frame here. As you've indicated, there is an outlay for the materials to complete the project. Depending on the finished size of your puzzles, could they fit into a ready made frame? Could you share the measurements? <LI-USER uid="14838"></LI-USER> might have some budget-friendly advice for you. I have seen finished jigsaws glued onto a backing board without a frame which is a very minimal way to display them. I'm sure our clever and creative community members will have some suggestions for you too.

Any advice in terms of painting over tiles, how much grout to get/what kind and what kind of adhesive to use?

Best,

Sara

I like this. Very inspiring, so thank you for sharing all the details. I can see some headphone stands coming up!

I use Bluetooth headphones mostly for music, which avoids the cord problem, but they still tend to get in the way laying around amongst the stuff on the desk. The stand will give them a longer life and will look better too.

Looks great and well done on using the oil base products, as they are much better if baby chews the wood. Apparently this is because the oil based products “chip”, whereas water based products tend to become “chewy”, and are not a good idea.

I could see the box on top becoming a dog bed?

cheers Deb
