Re: How to fix shower niche trim flaking?

Hi @JamesT1,

Many thanks for your question about repairing flaking tile trim.

I'd also like to extend a warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community; it is fantastic to have you with us.

Ultimately the best way to fix this issue is to replace the trim, as you will have a new trim with a perfectly uniform surface. If this is not an option, my suggestion is to paint the trim. The only issue with this option is that colour-matching is very good, but it is not perfect, so there may be some small variation in the colour.

You should start by removing a section of the white coating from the trim that's around the size of a 10-cent coin to bring in-store for a colour match. While in-store, have the Paint Desk team member mix you a small batch of suitable colour-matched paint and pick up a can of Zinsser Undercoat Primer And Sealer Spray, UNi-PRO 10mm 3 Piece Touch Up Set and some painter's tape.

When home, clean the area thoroughly to remove any dust or debris that can reduce adhesion. Allow the area to dry before taping off to prevent over-spray. Once taped off, apply a coat of the primer following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the primer to dry and then paint over with your colour-matched paint.

Transform Your Aluminium Window Frames is a great resource for guidance on painting aluminium.

Let me know if you have any further questions, I am more than happy to help.

Re: window frame inner and outer black rubber. how to replace or tidy up?

Hello @ab123

It is difficult to tell if it is a rubber seal or deteriorated silicone. I suggest doing a bit of investigation and see if it is a silicone sealant or a rubber seal. If it is a rubber seal and is falling apart, I suggest cleaning the gap out and filling it with Selleys 310g Black Roof And Gutter Silicone Sealant.

It appears that the finish on the aluminium has worn down and it would be extremely difficult to find a matching colour. I can only suggest painting the entire frame a new colour, but this would mean that the rest of the window frames of the house will need to be painted as well for uniformity.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

How do I paint over exterior powder coated window frames?

Hi, I want to paint over my exterior powder coated aluminium window frames. They are currently mission brown and in generally fair condition. My house is about 35 years old and faces east west. I generally like to use British Paints products but I'm open to any suggestions about other brands ie Dulux, Taubmans. I will be using a white topcoat. This is to match white plantation shutters to be fitted later this year. The biggest problem I'm finding is reliable information for metal primers and matching topcoats. As the work will be all brushwork, I need some advice on good quality brushes as well.

Re: Metal Paint

Hello @Harveers

Thanks for sharing your question about painting your aluminium window frames. The general steps are to thoroughly clean the window frame and wipe it down to make sure that it is free of grease dirt and debris. Sand the surface of the window frame and then give it another wipe down. Next you mask the areas you don't want to get over sprayed.

I propose having a look at the Dulux 300g Metalshield Epoxy Enamel Gloss Spray Paint New Machine Grey. It has excellent durability and rust protection. No primer is required for new bare steel, wrought iron or pre-painted metal surfaces. You also have the option of using an etch primer to get a good base for other topcoat paints.

Thanks for sharing your question about painting over your metal window frames.

This has been a popular discussion in the community. Just to give you a general idea of the steps involved; the window frame will need to be sanded down. All the sanding dust will need to be wiped off before you put the painter's tape to cover the areas you don't want to get sprayed over. Once the masking tape is on and everything is protected you can spray paint the frame.

Affix wall insulation (not completely necessary but playing it safe).

Step 4

Affix James Hardie cladding.

The panelling was an effort to cut and secure but so worth it in the end.

Just a side note that each sheet weighs 39.7kg and I really struggled standing on a ladder to hold that weight, so my husband had to hold each sheet whilst I got the first nails in to hold it in place. Even at ground level, lifting and holding into place was a real effort so this is one stage I would look to get a couple mates around to help with next time.

Affix aluminium flashing.

Step 5

Paint.

Install D.I.Y. light. There was an old light fitting there but we replaced it with a D.I.Y. light and are very happy with the result and soft glow it casts at night.

Check garden plan layout.

Step 6

Remove bricks, prep soil and install edging.

Step 7

How to paint aluminium window frame?

Hi folks

Some rookie mistakes with painters tape around my aluminium window frame when painting my trim has led to the need for a cleanup. Rookie mistakes included bad placement of tape and probably taking off too soon. So my question is how best to go about firstly cleaning the paint off of the aluminium window frame. I'm thinking I will need to redo the trim paintwork after this is done but any suggestions about how best to go about the cleanup and redo would be appreciated thanks.

In regards to the timber windowsill, I suggest following the same procedure you used when painting your walls. I also suggest having a look at this discussion - How to paint 80s aluminium doors? by @KingStreetReno. You'll find plenty of suggestions on how to paint aluminium frames.

They were originally a bright cream and made our home look out dated.

Materials

400 grit sand paper

For us thus included all window felts, rubbers , tracks and any hardware .

Step 4

Use drop sheets everywhere else as there will be overspray incl on carpets, walls, furniture

Step 5

Make sure the room is well ventilated as thus stuff is very strong . Shake can well for approximately 1 minute . Hold can 10cms away from frame and do a light spray over your frames .

Step 6

1st coat takes 15 minutes to dry then apply the second coat. Allow this to dry for no more then 15 minutes and remove all tape from the protected area.

Step 7

Allow windows and frames to dry for 12 hours before completely shutting them . The project is very tedious and takes approximately 2 hours per large window to prep. It's important to take your time as the results are amazing if you do so. We originally got quoted $6000 to spray 17 windows and 4 sliding doors and the protected as a DIY only costed us $300 in spray and approximately 40 hours worth of labour

Hi Team

1. I would like to apply some protection in the window architrave. Some have mold due to condensation. And also to keep the colour natural.

2. Also do you have a glue to seal the outside connection between window aluminium frame and the brick?

Appreciate any advice.

Re: Aluminum frame Eco-decking Project

Hello @SujayM

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about your decking project.

The equivalent product at the store is the Ekodeck Composite Decking. It is resistant to termites, rot, decay, mould and mildew. It comes in several colours and no oiling or painting is required. Since the usable height is 500mm it would be ok to use either wood or steel for your deck framing. The gap underneath is more than enough to provide adequate air circulation to prevent moisture from being trapped under your deck.

I suggest having a look at these guides - How to build a low-level deck by @Adam_W and How to build a deck by @MitchellMc. These guides should give you an idea of what to consider when planning your decking frame. Because you have a lot of space to use, you'll need to decide whether you'll build it as a normal deck structure or a single deck structure.

As for the stairs, I recommend having a look at the Ezistep kits. It can be assembled quickly and easily with a power drill, ideal for when you need to build steps for your deck. The grooved treads are easily assembled as the stringers are routed in for secure and longer-lasting construction.

I suggest checking with your local council on the rules and regulations on deck framing before you begin construction. In regards to the aluminium framing, let me do some investigation and get back to you.

I also recommend having a look at the Bunnings deck assembly guide:

Re: how to join two gazebos

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @msbobthebuilder. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about joining two gazebos.

You could potentially run guttering between the two gazebos, but without a fascia to attach it to, I feel that would overly complicate the join and add many more points of failure. You'll have similar issues with the valley and ridge capping as although they'll cover the join, there's no real way to stop water from the flat roof getting up and under them unless you were thinking of attaching them under the roof.

I'd suggest the simplest solution would be to butt the gazebos up against each other and apply a thick bead of Black SikaFlex 11FC to the edge of the rooves before bringing them together. You'll also need to mechanically fix the gazebos together, so undue stress is not placed on the join. You could cut some threaded rods to create oversized bolts for connecting the two frames. It appears the bolts could run between the two gazebos' horizontal frames at the joining point, tieing them together. Alternatively, if you can fix the two beams together with several Zenith 10G x 65mm Galvanised Countersunk Head Metal Screws, that would also work.

Once you have this mechanical and sealed join, you can go over the top with an additional silicone caulking product to give the area dual protection. I'd suggest you caulk the top of the joint with Selleys 290ml Clear Storm Waterproof Gutter And Roof Sealant, as it is suitable for metals and plastics and will provide protection to the joint. Ensure the caulking spreads at least 15mm out onto both rooves. For an additional layer of protection, you can then apply Consolidated Alloys 75mm x 10m Weatherproof Byute Flash Flashing Tape over the join, ensuring it is stuck sufficiently to both rooves. This flashing will essentially create your valley where the water will run into and then off the roof. I'd suggest painting the aluminium-backed flashing the same colour as your gazebos.

I've created a rendering below for you that should hopefully help illustrate the above.

Polished aluminium is a bit of a labour of love @twocutekelpies. To keep it gleaming, it needs regular maintenance. You'd always want to use a sealing product to maintain the shine for as long as possible. I'll be using something like carnauba wax on these parts. However, I do like the idea of a hard clear coat product, and on a window frame which will be exposed to weather, that might be an option. I'm also a fan of what you've done with painting the frames. That's a great solution.

These particular bicycle parts were clear coated by the manufacturer. I've removed that clear coat and repolished, knowing that without the clear they will tarnish quickly. As a temp solution before applying a wax-based polish, I've got the aluminium parts coated in WD-40 to prevent air from getting to their surface and beginning the tarnishing process.

Re: Painting a Metal/Aluminium Mirror Frame

Hello @NanaEvie

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about painting your mirror frame.

With a little bit of masking preparation, you can change the colour of your mirror frame in a day. I suggest using ScotchBlue 24mm x 55m Original Multi-Surface Painter’s Masking Tape in combination with UNi-PRO 288mm x 50m Masking Paper - Twin Pack. Use the masking tape along with the masking paper to cover the exposed sides of the mirror frame. Then mask the inside of the mirror frame leaving the aluminium frame the only thing exposed.

Please make sure to remove all the items on top of your vanity and mask the vanity top to prevent overspray damage. With one last inspection check your masking handy work. Any areas you suspect will get hit with paint overspray cover it with masking paper and tape.

Here is a handy step-by-step guide: How to paint window frames

Now don't be confused, the steps for painting aluminium window frames is the same when painting aluminium mirror frames.

Please keep us updated with your progress, we look forward to seeing your mirror frame revamped.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

What is the best way to paint aluminium windows?

Painting aluminium window frames is a cheaper alternative to removing the entire set. The key to a successful paint job is preparation. Give the window frame a thorough clean with a brush and vacuum cleaner, making sure to remove all forms of dust and debris both inside and out. If there are weather seals attached to the window frame these must be removed as well.

Masking off the area around the window with painter's tape and a plastic drop sheet will prevent over spray from marking your wall. Putting a canvas drop sheet will protect your floor while spraying. With proper preparation, you should be able to achieve excellent results. - EricL

How do I remove scratches from aluminium framed door?

Our previous dog gouged deep scratches into our stacker doors out the back, trying to get in when we were out. Tough claws! (Did she use a file?). There are bits of aluminium sticking out at the ends of some scratches. Does anyone know how to get the surfaces smooth again without introducing more scratches! I would like to repaint the frames, but not sure how to to prepare them first. (I have included photo a sample of the scratches.) Thanks.
